These references are not todays but may still be relevant. This Indian variant is not known to be less or more dangerous than the earlier / original viral strains (level of dangerousness as yet not known to medical experts) https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-56844925

It's worrying and scary for Thailand if it gets out in big numbers given the low numbers of vaccinations, as this Indian variant appears, in India, to be killing a lot of people very quickly. https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/thailand-sees-first-local-cases-indian-covid-19-variant-2021-05-21/

Five new cases being reported this evening on Phuket island and 24 patients in hospital. Although it’s good to have single digit new cases, they are finding it hard to have zero infections even with strict entry restrictions. Only 15 days to go before the #PhuketReopening.

Closure of Phuket bars and alcohol restrictions turn off prospective foreign tourist says survey

Survey does show that there is interest in visiting Phuket and that some are already booked to come after July 1st. However, there is frustration that the island’s famous nightlife will be closed and over efforts to control visitors, including restrictions such as a ban on the consumption of alcohol while dining. It comes as top Siriraj Hospital medical expert, Dr Prasit Watanapa, has warned the government to abort the planned reopening.

A Thai Examiner opinion poll shows that nearly 92% of foreigners disagree with the decision by authorities on the island of Phuket to close bars and entertainment venues during the July 1st reopening of the well-known island destination with some travellers with links to Thailand already booked for arrival on the island after July 1st while others have cancelled their plans specifically because of last-minute restrictions and regulations. It comes as there is still unease about the plan because of mixed messaging from senior officials at both a local and national level as well as strong last-minute reservations expressed in the last 24 hours by one of the country’s most respected medical experts.

Minister of Tourism and Sports Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn who only in the last week indicated that the Phuket Sandbox reopening may not go ahead because the island was not ready even as the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) boss Yuthasak Supasorn was visiting the world class tourist destination giving assurances to the contrary. The continuous mixed messaging on the initiative is making many commercial operators nervous while last-minute restrictions and conditions are both irking and putting off potential tourists thinking of availing of the proposition but who also have other more convenient alternatives. (Right) Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul confirmed on Monday that the proposal has been forwarded to the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) who will review it again on Friday.

It would be interesting to know if, when delivered, these doses go to the elderly and people with the 7 chronic diseases stipulated by the government. I bet not.

In his recent address to the nation, the Prime Minister stated that the government is determined to reopen the country in 120 days, with major tourist provinces reopening gradually as they are ready.

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha said that Phuket -- with its Phuket Sandbox campaign -- will serve as the pilot project for the national reopening initiative.

The Premier acknowledged the risks associated with this major decision, but reiterated that the government prioritizes the well being of the people and that the nation is strong enough to weather such risks.

I think it was Dr Fauchi who once said that the virus sets the time line, not us.

the 120 days time line has been pulled from thin air. There are no data metrics or milestones set, from which it can be determined whether the country should or should not open.

i can’t shake the feeling that this country is bumbling through this on a day to day basis.

I'd have to agree the virus sets the timeline. Look at UK, planned to open fully by 21st June, postponed another 4 weeks unless overturned by vote in Parliament. Even then there is no guarantee that all restrictions will be relaxed at that date. The way the delta variant is spreading in the UK puts doubt in my mind to the reported situation in Thailand.

To be fair, the date for opening up fully in the UK was set as 21st June at the earliest. It was always a provisional date. Yes the delta variant is spreading in the UK, but it's not causing a lot of deaths or serious illness so far.

I believe they will review the data in 2 weeks time, and if it still appears that the vaccines have more or less wiped out the potency of Covid then it's likely all restrictions will be removed before 19th July.
