Popular Post Jingthing
The nation of Taiwan has a special problem with vaccines from the nation of China that the nation of Thailand doesn't. Taiwan accuses China of blocking its access to Covid-19 vaccines (news.com.au) The Biden administration has made it very clear that they aren't interested in helping Americans abroad with vaccines. The vaccine donations are to foreign countries, not to expats. What percentage of the donations would cover expats that are living in countries where there are access issues or discriminatory policies against non-nationals? I don't know but surely less than one percent. Needless to say I agree with donating vaccines but I disagree with throwing expats under the bus in the middle of a pandemic. Popular Post sqwakvfr
Think of it this way: 1) What does the US government gain by vaccinating it's overseas citizens? Not much. Maybe a thank you. 2) What does the US government gain by donating vaccines to Taiwan? it pisses off Beijing. This is called a diplomatic victory. Also, if the US vaccinates American in Thailand then how about Americans in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia etc, etc? To be fair how can the US Government only chose Thailand. Also, doubt the Chinese Government is vaccinating it's citizens in Los Angeles or New York? 2

jerrymahoney
So the 'hop on a plane' response. To go to the US for a COVID vax from Thailand is at least a 6 week endeavor between Moderna/Pfizer Covid shots (one-shot J&J not easily available) and quarantine upon return to Thailand. Plus all the PCR tests, COE and insurance requirements, and assumes one has a place to stay in the US for 3-4 weeks maybe with no car. Besides although only a recommendation not binding reg: International Travel During COVID-19 updated June 10, 2021 Do not travel internationally until you are fully vaccinated. If you are not fully vaccinated and must travel, follow CDC’s international travel recommendations for unvaccinated people https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/international-travel-during-covid19.html Edited June 19, 2021 by jerrymahoney
Popular Post impulse
Just curious... Has Thailand even asked the US government for vaccines? Or given any indication they would accept them if offered? The only articles I saw indicate they're still trying to wring every little scrap of corruption out of their vaccine programs. Free stuff from the US gub'ment wouldn't fit those plans. I still go back to my analogy. If Thailand had a famine and the USA provided food just for US Expats in LOS, what could possibly go wrong? 3

And people say we Americans can't whinge. Honestly, do you think President Biden is combing over the list? And there is a bigger world out there, it's not just about you in Thailand. Vaccine donations from the U.S. to other countries do not come with any provision that U.S. citizens in those countries will have access to them. Do I wish the U.S. would donate more - they've donated cash so far - vaccines to Thailand? Heck yes. But suspect Thailand told the U.S. that they are doing just fine.

Popular Post thaibeachlovers
IMO any expat that thinks they deserve special attention while living elsewhere is living in Lala Land. Any that want to be treated as citizens should go home. We chose to leave home and go elsewhere, and we should live with the consequences of that if it goes wrong and not go around having a rant about how unfair life is. Time to put on the big boy pants and man up. 12
Jeffr2
Thailand turned down offers from Pfizer, Moderna and AZ from India last year. Perhaps that's played into the decision. Makes sense.

Heng
Not to mention (as an American), we tend to be a troublesome/litigious bunch if things go wrong (rare vaccine related death or stroke for example). There's more legal leeway when we're getting free gov't provided vaccines at CVS as opposed to embassy organised events.

I said nothing about expecting the US to provide any vaccine for me here in Thailand. I just think some persons on here underestimate what would be involved to travel to the US JUST to receive a vaccine. BTW other than Medicare for the past few years, I don't know that I've lost ANY benefits otherwise provided by the US government if I remained stateside. Ventenio
don't be selfish......be thankful they are helping humans on our planet!! Each dose has a blue bow with the flag of Taiwan and the words, "Taiwan is a great country, send us more semiconductor chips, and we will sort-of help you against those who carry a red book." If American sent doses to Thailand...... the response, "Thanks bro, next time in Pattaya you get 20% off falang price."

It's the waiting, 3 - 4 weeks for dose #2, then another 14 days before you could do a sandbox, or just do a 14 day quarantine in Bangkok. It's six weeks minimum. And I don't want to impose on freinds or family as they are all vaccinated, and I would not be. And there is a shortage of hotels, AirBnBs and rentals cars. Would be better after Labor Day. It's all down to when a paid option might be available here, and if we can get equal footing in the queues, with Thais seeking a paid option. And if/when borders open for vaccinated without any quarantine, which might be 1 Nov best case.

What became of finalizing deal so Belgium & France could provide vaccine to their expats? Why should US provide vaccines? Because I helped pay for them, for one thing. I still am blessed with paying Federal Income Taxes. Biden and Trump both promised "vaccines for all Americans". US wants to look like a virgin in bordello: "We provide with no strings attached". Have we seen riots and uproar over China requiring vaccine for their expats? Not at all. Most sensible people would consider that the proper thing to do, besides being part of State Department mission of seeing to the well being of citizens abroad.

Heng
Don't worry, we'll eventually have plenty of Pfizer vaccine made in China by whoever has the license from Pfizer there. Maybe they should have set that money aside for a situation just like this. All those checks would have paid handsomely for a trip to Guam or the mainland Edited June 20, 2021 by GinBoy2
