The Thai people have given PM Prayut Chan-o- cha's government's 120 day plan to reopen to foreign tourism a big thumbs down.

That's if the results of the latest NIDA (National Institute of Development Administration) poll are to be believed.

Asked if they agreed with the plan 53.55% said they were strongly against it.

19.91 said they were not in favor, 13.15% kind of agreed with it and only 12.43% voiced total agreement.

Bangkok Business News picked from the results that 69% of Thais were more concerned about health than the economy.

When asked if they believed the government could actually reopen the country the results were mirrored.

Only 6.94% said yes, 20.22% thought maybe, 28.68% not much and and 49.94% thought no way could they achieve that.

1,311 respondents of 15 years and up from all social strata nationwide were asked in the poll conducted from Tuesday to Friday last week.

So they're not vaccinated but don't want vaccinated people near them. Native logic at its finest   They've no need to worry, under current conditions Guantanamo Bay looks a far better option

Yes, I wonder if a leading question was asked, you know, something along the lines of "Given how deadly Covid is and how hospitals are being overwhelmed, do you think that tourists should be let into the country?".

Already the pollster has placed doubt into the mind, especially if she is attractive.

The previous poll was ran by SuperPoll, which is controlled by the government, so no surprise about the results

Pretty much sums it up I suspect.

So you're saying 25% wants the falang!!!!!!

Most falangs only have one friend, so 25% smiling faces is perfect!!!!

Maybe 99% of bar girls want the falang, up from 9%!!!!

hahahhahhahahahahaha

UNFORTUNATELY, life before COVID was more fun.......so I can't have my cake and eat it too...

OK, let the falang in...............................................in 2023.    and only let in women.  lol

Always one to lower the tone of the conversation. Of course bar prostitutes in Pattaya want sexpat farang back, as well as those with ulterior interests.

The normal Thai of course don't want them back, as we are worried about getting infected with Covid. Ask any countries' citizens the same question and you'll find the majority don't want tourists until they have been vaccinated.

Why? They'll be vaccinated and tested multiple times. 95% of Thais are neither and besides, Thailand has itself on the highest risk Covid-19 list possible. If I was coming I'd be more concerned with my 2 week enforced quarantine having been in Thailand when I got home!

Neither do I.  After the total crash of the tourism markets places like Phuket and Pattaya may be quaint enough to visit again <I avoid them like the plague> and Chiang Mai traffic <which is now manageable> may stay manageable.  Yeah - keep it closed.  It's not going to recover anyway, not in New-Normal-Land where fear-of-Covid is spread layer-upon-layer like a compost in a garden bed.

So less than 1,000 Thais do not want to open the country.

Hardly a scientific poll from a population of almost 70 million.

The problem is not the foreigners, it is the Thais moving around to accomodate them. How many bargirls will get infected on the bus to Pattaya? How many people do they spread it to? How fast does covid explode in BKK oncw people start mingling more?

They totally botched the vaccine distribution, but without that, a lot of people are going to die. We are about to see the results of reopening schools. I am scared.

To be fair the Thais were told that the virus is spread by dirty westerners.

So it is no wonder they worry about letting them back in.

It's not the foreign tourists, all vaccinated and well checked for Covid-19, who are the problem, it's rather domestic traveling and migrant workers, especially illegal border crossers.

All these half closure and half openings doesn't seems to work anywhere, rather stop domestic traveling completely and make a full lock down in provinces with Covid-cases for a week or two; it may both work and also be financially much cheaper in the long run...????

Always one acting like MILLIONS come to Thailand for different reasons than sex and fun.

Always one who asks a ridiculous question...

Always one who gets upset when they learn their "home" hates them......wants them gone........thinks they are dirty.......covid spreaders.......

dreams shattered.......

More like 'If the dirty, smelly foreigners bring masses more covid infections with them, would you like them to come back in ?'

The public opinion surveys have been pretty consistent about this subject throughout the pandemic other than the one previous to this one that was obviously  nonsense.

So tests that should be done to find hotspots etc will be sidelined off to be stockpiled for those few tourists who may come. Get your house in order before inviting guests

And you can be in a bar or on a beach in Cuba with a glass of beer or some Caribbean rum.

Is it just me or does anyone else feel like they are caught in a revolving door regarding whether Thai's and the Thai government wants or does not want tourists?

One week they announce more restrictions, the next a pronouncement of openings.
One week plans to encourage travel, the next more bar and restaurant closings.  I feel like this is the "Twilight Zone"

Very pleased to see the Thais are worried about passing on Covid to the foreign tourist as this must be the obvious reason they don't want them to come?
