  • Another way of saying the sinovac is available in large quantities compared with other vaccines is we totally messed up ordering and making the better ones ourselves.  This is not a statement as to si

And now please a quick survey how many government officials got the Chin...  wonder vaccine.

I bet there aren't a lot of them.

That's not really fair. He makes the point - valid in my view - that Sinovac was the only vac available to Thailand in large numbers at the relevant times. The others were NOT available at the time (ask any Australian).

Of course there were also mistakes made (refusing Indian help with AZ, which was soon cut off anyway because of India's own needs, & no doubt some brown envelopes passing around).

This is not true. Other vaccines were available back then. But for some extremely strange reason, the Thai FDA only approved the Sinovac vaccine. This despite the fact that Sinovac hadn't completed phase 3 trials. In fact, to date, China hasn't released the raw data of these Phase 3 trials. It wasn't until months after the Sinovac vaccine got approved that the FDA greenlit other vaccines. This despite the fact that these vaccines had had their phase 3 trials completed and all raw data shared months earlier.

Thailand also had the opportunity to order 10 million doses of the AZ vaccine at a much much cheaper rate per dose than the Sinovac vaccine. Thailand  chose to order about 3 million doses instead.

Australia’s vaccine rollout ‘constrained’ by Pfizer supply shortages until August

Mon 21 Jun 2021 12.51 BST

Shortages of the Pfizer Covid vaccine are expected to slow Australia’s rollout through June and July, as states and territories call on the commonwealth to sign up more GPs to dispense doses when supplies increase in August.

At national cabinet, the commonwealth conceded that supply is the rollout’s biggest constraint.

Asked if the supply constraints were likely to delay younger people’s access to Pfizer, Frewen conceded this was the case but said supplies were “suitable” for the categories already eligible.

In December 2020, the Indian government offered to sell Thailand at least 1 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccines at cost.

It had recently emerged that both Pfizer and Moderna asked the FDA to review their vaccines as early as late 2020. According to local media reports, Pfizer also offered to sell their jabs to the Ministry of Public Health in November of last year.

The decision to basically rely on an unproven company in Siam Bioscience to produce vaccines has been criticized from all corners including by Siam Bioscience spokeswoman Nualphan Lamsam who said that relying on “one horse” by the government was a bad decision.

“Sinovac had one major advantage over the other vaccines, it was available in large quantities,” said the official on condition of anonymity...????

And even Sinovac might not be as efficient as other vaccines, it was better than no vaccine, much better, and it might have saved lives, many lives.

From the so-called Black Cluster on Koh Samui, none of the vaccinated with either two jabs Sinovac, or only one jab Astra Zeneca, got seriously ill, only mild symptoms or asymptomatic positive, so Sinovac seems to have some positive level of efficiency.

And from that statement, can we also claim the lassitude Thailand exhibited, getting orders in for Pfizer, and bringing it's AZ production on-line, and supplying the country, cost lives?

You can't have Pfizer supply problems if you don't order in the first place like Thailand, again back on topic to my post

Sure and order and delivery are two different things.

Sinovac is good, but Sinopharm ist better

no comment about the other crappy gene therapy treatments, these are not vaccines

time will tell you

Sinovac has one big advantage over other vaccines, official says

And everybody know what that big advantage is!

Official's get most of paid money back in own pocket!

Of course it is available in bulk. no one else wants it

It does take fair bit of time to get the mRNA vaccines delivered. My friend in Australia was waiting months to get appointments for vaccinations, finally he got Moderna dates for October. Hi didn't want the inferior AZ jab.

Buy one million doses of sino-something and you get a submarine for free

Yes. So did Australia and Japan learn that order is one thing and delivery is another.

Thailand never got the chance to learn....................it never ordered in the first place so whether they would be late in delivery or not like Siam Bioscience is irrelevant and hypothetical, some countries they were late some not. By the way Australia and Japan are not Thailand

Sure, but to get to the luxury of waiting you have to order first which they did not in time as per the article I posted

South Africa ordered 30 mil Pfizer doses in April,  10 millions delivered so far,  nearly the end of September.

Great Thailand could have ordered in Nov so when do you think it would have reached here?

Get serious...November last year? Only the rich countries were putting orders in the first couple of months after the vaccines got approved,  they can afford to order big surpluses to hedge their bets. That's why there is surplus of vaccines in EU.

Name one country at the same income level as Thailand or poorer, which has had uninterrupted supply of mRNA vaccines and has fully vaccinated 60% plus of the population.

Well, a sharp-tick in the eye is "available".

Doesn't mean it's a good thing though. Sure efficacy is more important than availability? And if sonovac is so effective why give a third shot booster?

But what this message really means is that sinovac is the bulk of their vaccine load through the end of the year, and probably well into 2022.

Only a month ago they were intent on phasing sinovac out as of 1 Nov 2021. Now they just need to make it seem like they're doing something so give sinovac now, as a first shot, and then hope for something better next year.

Thailand had already ordered with AZ in Oct via Siam Bioscience but they did not order enough, see my post...............and article

With Sinovac, other than the fact that it is cheaper than the other ones, you'll probably will have to take couple or more of booster shots to make it work and this is when the cheap become expensive...

not mentioning kowtowing ( i would have used stronger terms but it's not allowed) to the big brother China...

Chinese proverb? Buy Cheap, Buy Twice.

Well since Delta hopped over the Great Wall, the CCP better get on with copying the western potions, or they're toast.

He makes a point that is correct at a single moment in time, but has ignored events that preceded that moment.

he should consider:

1. Thailand could have ordered other vaccines  prior to there being a back log. The government did not do so.

2. the government did not order other vaccines because they put their faith in a start up company producing AZ vaccine in quantities required to meet anticipated needs. The company could not meet its production targets

3. the government under anticipated the volume of  AZ vaccine that would be required. As a result they under ordered and had to subsequently try and increase the order. Since the start up company couldn’t even meet the original order, they couldn’t meet the increased order.

4. only when the government realized how much vaccine would actually be needed, and compared it to how much vaccine they would likely receive from their local AZ supplier, did they cast around for other vaccines to make up the shortfall. At that point there was a back log of orders and sinovac was the only one immediately available in sufficient quantities to make a difference.

5. integral to the poor decision on required amounts of vaccine and the urgency with which it would need to be deployed, was a relaxed attitude to the ability of the government to control the virus. Having beaten it back twice previously, a sense of complacency assumed that it could be beaten back again and vaccines deployed in a leisurely fashion. Not enough attention was paid to both alpha and delta outbreaks in other countries, and what could/would happen in Thailand when those variants took hold here.

whether other governments could have done better is open to debate but the under estimation of required vaccine amounts, initial reliance on a sole start up supplier and laissez faire attitude toward being able to control future outbreaks, were with hindsight, serious errors.

If it has a big advantage why has no Western Country purchased that particular vaccine it’s total BS yet another publicity stunt to try and persuade the good folk of Thailand that it’s a wry good vaccine if that were the case why did the majority of the administration have the AZ vaccine including the PM

"our AstraZeneca plants were not yet operational"

Didn't the Thai company that manufactures AstraZeneca get a grant of over 600 million baht so it could get up and running quickly?
