Popular Post georgegeorgia
This topic may have been covered in some ways but now im getting over 60 plus had 2 work colleagues die in the last 3 months im thinking how valuable life is. One colleague Bob was 68yo and kept talking about retirement,he died at work on the nightshift,(hospital wardsmen)just went to have a nap on his break and never woke up,that was in August,he kept saying how he would be travelling Europe when he retires blah blah blah, supossed to have retired last December then it was July then it was this December, well now he is gone ,left probaly a million in retirement funds ,his kids will get it. Now my question is mostly related to those over 60 ,those old farts like me,or should i be politically correct ,and say mature aged guys ,the thing is,are you aware you will probaly die between 78 & 83yo? Are you doing everything to enjoy this time you have left ? are you going to get your goals completed ,enjoy that time you have left ? I said this to a work colleague last night whilst working, he is another oldie who wont retire at 77yo,still fit is a hospital cleaner ,hasnt taken a sick day since 1992 and proudly boasts about his 2 million in retirement funds that he pays into and how he is going to travel the world when he retires..... ....yeah right he was extremely offended last night when we spoke of Bobs death ,i said to him your 77 what are u planning o do in the next 6 years you have left ? He was shocked ,what do you mean he says puzzled ? I said mate you are 77 you dont have much time ....to a puzzled look by him before he stormed off . and thats where this past few months have made me aware,i have about 20 to 25 years left,if that,if im lucky ,that means not wasting it The point im trying to make is some of you either forget or just think your going to live forever ,im sorry to be blunt ,but as the financial planner said to me the other day ,most ill live up to about 83yo 84. Its a sad i guess morbid thing to talk about ,i used to try to talk about this to my late father who used to get angry ,but the point is i have planned to about 80yo financially and after the deaths of my 2 colleagues i have decided that the next 20 years i have left to , Grow old disgracefully ! sorry if this topic offends or hurts some of you but its no use pretending its not going to happen Edited September 22, 2021 by georgegeorgia 14 3 3 4
Popular Post Pravda
What are you talking about? Most 60yo posters here are in excellent shape and look better than Brad Pitt. I always said it's better to do your travelling while you are young rather than old and still have functioning brain cells. How many young guys do buy a house for the bargirl? No, they live and enjoy life and eventually return to their home country where they at least have security until they die. 9 1 1

Popular Post 86Tiger
Many people only need a dream to keep going. That dream is theirs alone and is always perfect. If guys are happy and active working late in life more power to them. Too many have retired, sit down and died very short time later. And to be honest, I can't think of a better way to go than doing what I want, as I want and never wake up from a nap....... 10

I 'retired' at 53 it was a huge financial hit to do that, but, I decided that I wasn't getting younger, and life is short, I had a travel bucket list, and I went for it! I am so glad i did that, a mate the same age, stuck it out, he's, now been made redundant by the lurgy, and talking about going here and there, but he seems to be getting enmeshed in his property managements, and lets be honest, nobody is going anywhere -and expecting it to be any fun- for at least another year, and that's being wildly optimistic. He'll be 63 by then, and at 60 myself, I'm really noticing for the first time, I'm not able to do a lot of things I could do without even thinking twice, when I pulled the plug at 53, the rot is setting in. I'm so glad I cut and run when I did. Another mate with tons of cash has been wittering on about visiting Paris since his 30's But now, he'll likely die in South West Sydney before he hits 70.

chalawaan
Further thoughts on this topic. gerogegeorgia, i've noticed a few of your posts, while its not easy to get into Thailand right now, I would suggest you do it asap if you have decided you would like to give it a shot. Dont burn your bridges tho, it could get really nasty here if the people turn on the elites. For now, it still seems unlikely. But geopolitics aside, you write from a mindset that, death aside, you'll be fit until the day you go for a nap and never wake up, that's a wonderful way to go, but as a hospital worker, I'm sure you'll know it's not common, sadly. Most of us will get, or already have, chronic and worsening conditions that we have no one to blame for, but ourselves, I'm borderline obese, on the BMI scale as are most here my age, if they were honest! So far, i'm not unwell, but I don't kid myself, I'm a medical flatline waiting to happen. The years between now and our deaths could well be marred by debilitating disease, or strokes, and at best just general malaise, the old pecker playing up, and prostate cancer, a fate that awaits every male who lives long enough. So since it's all a slippery slope, even for the gym junkies, who won't extend their lives, but may have less of a dire decline to death, I say live for today like there's no tomorrow, because one day soon that no tomorrow will dawn for you -and me.

Even the best laid plans and all that. I'd be a happy man if I could read all the books I bought for "when I retire", but I spend too much time on this forum to succeed in that ???? 1

Popular Post bolt
Many people are in denial about getting old, they think they’ll go on forever Retiring is the end of your life. But surely retiring is the start of a new phase, it’s the time to take your watch off, switch the alarm off, let the young ones run around racing to beat the clock and the sunset. My older brother loves to tell me he won’t retire, he’ll work into his 70’s, I’m like why do you want to do that why not do stuff you want, and then I suppose he’s happy in his work or happy in his moment. I Know I’ll never have enough money, so why wait until your late 60’s to retire, I’m going to stop working when I’m 54-55, I’m 51 now. I’ll simply adjust my life to my finances and then get on with it, the kids will have to adjust why not now instead of later, we will die eventually so enjoy the last 10-20 years 7

Popular Post Saltire
Afraid I am another member of the 'do it before it's too late' group. Ten years ago at 55 years old I left a very well paid and very secure job to volunteer full time in Cambodia, I have no regrets. A very poor but very happy Cambodian once told me 'sometimes you just have to close your eyes and walk'. After 5 years in Cambodia, a few SE Asia hoidays later I met my now Thai wife and have never been happier, When I think about the last 10 years experiences, mostly fun stuff, and compare it to perhaps 10 years more working, I feel for me I did the right thing. If I was just retiring now, at 66 most of the experiences I have had would not be an option. That said, I am still hoping for another 10 to 20 years. I work on a farm a lot- excellent exercise in the fresh air. Popular Post Antonymous
The decision when/whether to retire is a very personal matter and there's no one answer to fit all. For many people that don't have sufficient savings or a pension lined up, there simply isn't a choice and they must continue earning a living through their labour. Then there are some who have been employed so long that their occupation has become their 'life' in itself - they haven't developed or don't have the capacity to develop interests outside of work. For some of my friends who have already accumulated a big nest egg, they don't want to give up work because they have a high powered job or business that gives them status and they are afraid to lose that. For me, I chose to retire at 50 at a time when I calculated (very large and detailed spreadsheet) that with careful investment of my accumulated savings I could live out a comfortable life until my mid-90's without the need to work again. I didn't have a large sum, but I knew plenty about money management and which investments within Thailand were likely to meet my financial goals. I have lived in Thailand 30 years and have invested everything in Thailand. It has been a great choice. Those investments have delivered beyond my expectations and already the capital growth far exceeds my rate of expenditure so my net worth has been increasing since I retired, not being depleted. I could not be happier with my decision to retire young (or to live in Thailand). I can do whatever I choose and my time is spent only on things that make me happy. Some things that I can enjoy fully at my age now may not be possible when I'm 70+ and that's one of the major good reasons to retire as soon as you have the means to do so. It should be said though, that if you are someone who gets bored when faced with 'free-time', early retirement probably isn't for you. You have to be self-motivated and able to develop hobbies and other interests to fill your time. 6
Popular Post Rampant Rabbit
I retired around my mid forties, dont regret it am 57 now, Dad died at 86 Mum still fine at 93, the thing is you realy can never know how long you have left which makes it a bummer to plan financially as you want to die penniless...unless you have kids which I dont. As for what I want to do............... well, not be told by anyone what to do is great , not really interested in much not bothered about travel, like the garden thats about it.

Are you doing everything to enjoy this time you have left ? are you going to get your goals completed ,enjoy that time you have left ? If your financial and want to break away from the slave trade, then do it. Decided at age 47 after a medical scare that I needed to plan for an early retirement, I did that at 55 some 6 years ago and not a single regret, I gave up a 6 figure salary at the time and earn a 3rd of that here which is enough for a comfortable lifestyle. People work all their lives for a number of reasons, that said, I have a lot of wealthy friends, some in their 60's and 70's, and am not talking your average millionaires, I'm talking multi-millionaires, easily worth $30, 40, 50 million and can't stop, they don't know how to, they enjoy the work and making all of that money, sadly the one in his 70's had been diagnosed with prostate cancer 6 months ago, still working and planning how he is going to divide up his property portfolio in his will because he knows it's going to be a sheet fight when he's goes, as the kids will have it out, that said, all he has done all of his life is work, because that is all he has known and has enjoyed it, no long holidays, short long weekends away, Xmas breaks etc, that is it, doesn't make sense to me, but I do not criticize him. I am happy to sit on my rear and make budget every month, and some if it's a good month, each to their own, I have enough to see me through till I am 101, and what will be left for the kids will be left for the kids, certainly nowhere near a fraction of the above guys worth. Enjoyment can be achieved in a number of ways in retirement, just depends on what you want out of life. Just knowing that I don't have to be anywhere at any particular time, or have to take many calls is so just right for me, I remember the amount of calls I used to take, my wife saying once that I should glue the mobile to my ear....lol. Investing my money and watching it cost me nothing to live here in the past 6 years is very comforting, also knowing that the money I have is secure and readily available is a plus, that and I don't have to pay any tax on the income I earn is also a big feature. If your serious about retiring early, then good for you, just make sure your financial and how you are going to finance your lifestyle here, suffice to say if you have property back in Oz, be very careful because once your residency status changes when you move here, you will get hit with a hefty capital gains tax bill on your property when you sell it, like 42% hefty, and the new legislation takes the CGT event all the way back to when you first purchased the property, not when you left the country or rented the property out for the 1st time, so you WILL want to talk to your accountant, also any rent is 32c in the $ with no tax threshold, it's from the very 1st dollar, also no negative gearing allowed on the property for non-residents, which you will become after 183 days living here, and if you think you can get around your residency status as an Australian resident while living overseas, yeh well good luck with that one. You really need to do your research and talk to your accountant, but also know what he/she is talking about. You will want to also earn an income while you are here vs chewing into your savings so that it doesn't cost you anything to live here, otherwise your funds will only be going south, have a budget and stick to it, also recommend you take out private health insurance as Medicare won't cover you here and hospitals are not cheap for major surgery, but that is up to you, it's a topic where a few don't like as it's costly, some are happy with the public hospitals and that is ok, private cover will chew into about 15% of your budget, however if your earning, it's a no brainer. I have seen friends and a brother in their 40's all die due to diseases, which can and will strike at anytime, suffice to say if I carked it tomorrow, I could at least say I have really enjoyed my last 6 years sitting on my rear, but I intend on staying here for at least another 20 years, doing the odd domestic travelling with some overseas trips pre-Covid. 3
