Thailand looks to welcome tourists again — less than half its population is fully vaccinated

Come Monday, Thailand will be lifting quarantine restrictions for travelers from more than 40 countries who have been fully vaccinated — even though less than half its population has been completely inoculated.

 

As of Oct. 27, only around 42% of the Thai population has been fully vaccinated against Covid-19, according to Our World in Data. In comparison, other countries in the region such as Cambodia, Malaysia and Singapore have had more than 70% of their population fully inoculated against Covid.

 

Among the region’s economies, Thailand is one of the “most dependent” on tourism, with the sector accounting for around 21% of GDP in 2019, according to Sian Fenner from Oxford Economics.

that's an unfair comparison - those other mentioned countries had more pens, fax machines and even old telex machines to order vaccines from

If i were a tourist thinking of coming to Thailand, i'd wait at least 3 or more months before i book anything or make plans to come, from the simple reason that everything is still up in the air and the goal posts can be moved at any moment without any reasons or prior notice as the people who make the rules as they go themselves not sure what to do...

It’s already been reported in Australia about Thailand’s high case numbers and low vaccination rate.

 

And with Aussies who have been scared senseless by the their state premiers about the virus.

 

I just can’t see many ordinary tourists booking a holiday to

thailand and then you have all the hoops to jump through too.

This is the real issue why all the machinations.

 

Government is forced to open or face economic collapse.

 

Govt mishandling and incompetence, vacillation put the nation at risk of an explosion of covid cases. That is purely laid to rest at the rulers feet.

 

The issue imo is not a few million people entering. The issue is all the tourists circulating and quickly.

 

We know the vaccine is practically worthless in protecting from infection. It's now merely touted to reduce symptoms and serious illness.

 

Luckily, tourists won't show because of the laborious and tedious procedures and entry requirements. While this buys the government more time the economic crash continues.

Before tourists are set free to roam around they are negative.  Plus if they are VAXXED, they can't catch or spread covid right?  Trust The Science.

I see this opening being a big problem especially if they open the entertainment/bars.

Not even 50% and how much of the early vaccines are wearing off?

If the ICU's start to get full they will be in for big problems.

D if you do and D if you don't.  Hope not be there still are cases in the 10,000 range.  Could all turn out to be a disaster and a world wide embarrassment.

21% is realistic it seems ...

A fact is , that , if they want more short - term tourists , they need to make Thailand more attractive to them .

Only families with kids who come from a country not far from Thailand ( China  Russia , the middle east ) , will come for a short holiday .

Tourists from other , far away destinations , will consider a short trip to Thailand as too expensive , dangerous and difficult ... There still is Greece , Portugal , Turkey , Egypt etc ...

Better than focusing on farang short term tourists , it would be to favor the long term stayers as a reliable source of income .

It is time for a new type of an easy visa for those people , no more annoying 90 day reporting ( that can be surveilled by the Morchana phone app ) .

But they are all soooo scared about foreigners staying here ... they probably think , that foreigners will do some business here without the Thais profiting from it . A nightmare for them .

 

Btw ... Winter is coming in Europe , Russia and the US , and with this a rise in Covid cases is to be expected ( and already happening ) . Not a time to travel any more ... at least not for a short stay only ...

Wrong. Vaccination does NOT provide immunity and does NOT mean you cannot spread it. It massively reduces the chances you will be hospitalised and/or die. Read the science.

Exactly, who is going to come to a closed country with no booze, no bars and no girls. The Chinese are banned from travelling, Thailand won't accept any Indians or Russians, the Aussies have hiden away from the world, who does that leave?

Clearly your time is spent doing other things rather than studying science about Covid

Less pessimistic..... I see an increase, brought about more by open schools than tourists, although I also have fears for big 'events' like the planned Music Festival in Pattaya causing breakouts.....but, like the UK, Thailand will push onward.

Pattaya didn't look closed yesterday, a Friday, choked up traffic towards the Bua Khao market and solid all  down Klang. Mask wearing is still quite well followed, apart form the odd idiot farang in the Mall.
