The spokesman of the Royal Thai Police has clearly accepted that there is indeed prostitution in Thailand.

Pol Maj-Gen Yingyot Themjamnong didn't use that name - he used the euphemism of "sathan borikan".

But this means massage shops and places where "pay for play" goes on in the kingdom.

He said that his chief Gen Suwat Chaengyodsuk had ordered a New Year crackdown by crime suppression to stop the spread of Covid-19 at such places.

Famously a couple of years ago a police chief in central Thailand said there was no prostitution.

In reality hundreds of thousands of women and men are involved in the trade.

Yingyot said that action in "sathan borikan" was an ongoing thing but would be stepped up as many people moved about and went out at New Year amid the lessening of regulations, reported INN.

Establishments breaking the law would face prosecution, closure and the removal of licences.

He urged the public to call 1599 to report infractions.

How, where and to what end? Closing down a few massage parlors and arresting some street walkers? Authorities the world over has tried to stop prostitute, without real results. Now if they close nana or cowboy then you know it's serious and not just a sound bite

This will last until the police department for eradicating prostitution meets the police department for maximising revenue from bars and gogos.

Some additional guidance would be helpful. Are we supposed to call before or after?

The franchisees who represent a morally bankrupt administration, posing as puritans, are cracking down on a financial pillar of contemporary Thai society. How does a reasonable person even respond to this? Best to not respond at all. Fake purity in the worst possible form. Not convincing on any level.

They truly want to kill off everything that brings in tourists and replace it with a fantasy Thailand where high rollers forgo Monaco, Dubai and Miami instead rerouting their private jets straight to old Siam where they can breathe the sooted air and catch listeria from Som Tam vendors far and wide.

This probably means some well publicized bust of a massage shop is coming soon.

i vaguely recall earlier random police raids in hotels and massage shops. To what end, I don’t remember.

Shameful, disgusting, thats it I am taking my 70 year young self, out of this cesspit along with my 19yo wife.

Does this mean I'm not really 'han sum'? When I walk passed massage shops the folks always tell me I am. They even say they want to have my baby. And some who call that out to me are ladyboys, so my appeal would seem to be not limited by gender nor biological possibility. It's primal, or so I thought.

I so wanted to believe there was no prostitution in Thailand, because my ego needs to believe I'm han sum and baby-daddy material.

I hate to think I've been fooled. Where's a mirror? I AM han sum! Please nobody call 1599, I cannot bear to face a world without true love!

Dread the day I’m having a nice relaxing massage and some beige uniformed man comes and checks under my towel to see if I’ve got a boner or signs of excitement.
