The BA.2 sub variant of the COVID-19 Omicron variant is spreading rapidly across Thailand and is replacing the BA.1 as the dominant sub variant. Medicine which is effective against the Delta variant and BA.1 is not as effective against the BA.2, according to Director-General of the Medical Sciences Department Dr. Supakit Sirilak.

Dr. Supakit said that BA.2 now accounts for 51.8% of Omicron cases and the rest (48.2%) are the BA.1, a clear indication that BA.2 is spreading faster than BA.1.

He also said that the Omicron variant now represents 99.6% of all COVID-19 cases in Thailand and is now spreading in every province, adding that of 1,898 cases tested last week, only seven cases were Delta variant.

Omicron, the original BA1 version, became the dominant strain in Thailand around the beginning of the year, eclipsing last year's Delta.

Now, the newer BA2 strain of Omicron is headed toward eclipsing the original BA1 Omicron strain.

BA2 is more contagious than BA1. Just as BA1 is/was more contagious than Delta.  But I haven't heard that the newer BA2 causes worse health problems...

With those minor symptoms why/how did you get tested.  Was it by choice?

It may be "over" for the dead, but not for everyone else.

this is still a deadly virus for those that are unvaccinated or those that have been vaccinated with an ineffective vaccine - the lack of information here and the lies and lack of transparency, well it is Thailand after all and they want to look good so don't expect anything that makes them look bad - you have to read between the lines .............. serious lack of detail about anything that is going on - numbers mean nothing without details - we are just not going to get it

yes I understand  what you are saying - I had same a few weeks ago but tested negative (which I did not believe), if you have had an effective vaccine then that would explain your experience, this is still a deadly virus but then so is the flu if you get it bad, people here in Thailand and around the world that are needing elevated treatment and possibly dying fit a pattern - one key factor is being vaccinated with an effective vaccine - Thailand lack of detail and status and general information just speaks to me,  in the west they anaylse everything - huge data that is very accurate and also made very public - these ### in charge here are hiding the numbers because in some infantile way they think bad numbers reflect on them.......they would actully be respected if they told the truth - not a chance of that happening, and it all comes down to education - the only way they can look good is to lie

Is this one going to have an even lower death rate than previous variants?  Are we still expecting >99.7% for non-elderly?

I hope everyone who actually shows symptoms will be able to handle the sniffles.

Maybe a couple more injections of the formula made in 2020 will be able to handle this 2022 variant.

That’s a sad, selfish outlook to taunt others with.  My daughter is struggling through her infection right now with terrible headaches.  She’s slowly mending, but please bear in mind that not everyone out there is an übermensch.  Have a little consideration for others.

Pretty sure you'll find he was saying that there is no evidence the BA2 causes worse health problems than BA1 which is good news. It does not mean it causes no problems as in your daughter.

Sorry to hear about your daughter ,It certainly is not easy on her and I am sure not on you either as a parent.  I hope she makes a quick and completer recovery.

My Daughter in the US had it, it lasted about a week and she said it was the worst body pain and headaches she ever experienced. The good news is that she fully recovered in a week.

I also know of another three more people with similar issues.

So a bit insensitive IMO also to discount other peoples suffering by minimizing the affect of this pandemic.

It sounds like you had the BA-1 as some friends of mine have a bad dry cough that never stops.

Yes.... Alpha mutated into Delta, which was certainly not weaker and less than a cold. The less pathological omicron can generate symptoms ranging from a mild cold to a bad flu.... but a bad flu can kill vulnerable people!

I owe TallGuyJohninBangkok an apology.  I somehow responded to his post when I intended my response for Blumpie.  So sorry for maligning you, TallGuy, but it was an honest mistake. I still feel strongly that we shouldn’t take anything Covid is dishing out lightly or with sarcasm. Some folks skate by with nary a problem while others suffer greatly. My daughter has been thrice-vaccinated, including a Pfizer booster. But she has medical issues that make her more susceptible to the disease. Good luck to all of you as we try to get past this pandemic.

OF or WITH? Agerage age? Comormidities? Without these facts, the numbers are meaningless.

Meanwhile in the real world, a relative is still suffers long covid effects, 8 months after they recovering from initial sickness.  As long covid goes, nothing major. General fatigue and the neck rash, itch and discoloration is subsiding, but still there.

...well good for you friend...Far from over...

Many folk have not had their first shot, many others have received none, for whatever health issues and personal reasons they have; and them catching any Covid-19 variant is serious. Still no vaccine being distributed for under 5 year olds.

More often than not, viruses weaken as they mutate, but this is not a law of nature.

You will remember the Delta variant, which I think was the deadliest of all to date.

How many times do people have to read that vaxination is not protection from the virus?

The vaxination supposedly stops the viruses effects from being as bad as they could be if you catch it.

Wrong all the way.

Delta was more lethal than earlier variants.

Vaccination helps stop infection.

Fact check: Yes, viruses can mutate to become more deadly.  Google says so anyways.

65 dead, sorry, but when were they infected, certainly not yesterday, how were they vaccinated, when, did they have conditions, what was their median age, how were they treated. It is shocking to read in other news that only 30% of the elderly are actually vaccinated in Thailand.

No one is advising people to be careless as if Covid did not exist. Frail people, persons at risk, should take good care of themselves. Personally I will continue with some precautions. But let's lift the restrictions for the country as a whole, starting with the Thailand Pass. Life goes on for the other 70 million people.

I find it interesting how so many of the Covid denying, anti-vaxxer, cabal always seem to get it and manage to find it to be nothing.  I also often wonder why people who barely believe it's a disease, would get tested?   I tend to question the validity of their reports.  I know a rather large number of people, fully vaccinated who got sick.  None of them described it as being so mild.  And, interestingly, none of them had an easy recovery.   They had lingering effects for weeks at a minimum.

The tens of millions of people say otherwise.  Such a deadly disease that many people are asymptomatic and others just get the sniffles.
