Number of Russian visitors in Phuket instantly drops, Phuket struggles to find solutions for hundreds of stranded tourists with no access to funds due to sanctions

The Russians haven't changed much in over 300 years.  I am currently reading a history of The Romanovs, a dynasty of Russian tsars.  Here is a excerpt describing Tsar Peter the Great's visit to England (and this is the aristocracy!):

"On 11 January 1698, Peter arrived in London where he visited King William III at Kensington Palace, watched Parliament in session and picked up an English actress, Laetitia Cross, who became his courtesan for the rest of the trip. Renting Sayes Court, John Evelyn’s immaculate house in Deptford, he treated it like a Jolly Company clubhouse. He had never seen a wheelbarrow, so he organized wheelbarrow races that soon destroyed the garden’s trimmed topiary, while indoors the Russians used the paintings for target practice, the furniture for firewood and the curtains as lavatory paper. Feather beds and sheets ‘were ripped apart as if by wild animals’."

  • let's face it quite apart from not being able to pay, they is hardly a country in the world that would welcome Russians at present. Any Russian who expects otherwise would be utterly foolhardy.

  • IF IF the Russian powers that be give a <deleted> about their stranded citizens perhaps they should negotiate for Thailand to provide some evacuation flights via UAE or ? and Russia can pay Thai

Yes, but the ones that did not die did nothing and decided to keep their Russian citizenship rather than try for asylum elsewhere - they are only moaning now as the toilet has hit the fan and are now up the creek monetary wise. I keep reading 'it's not all Russians' - far as I'm concerned it is every one of them that failed in the past to renounce their Russian heritage and claim asylum  elsewhere. I have no sympathy for any of them. Let them rot.

Pressure on the Russian people is a good way to pressure Putin.

Russia is a kleptocracy with the average wage lower than India, it’s scandalous what’s been going on for the last 22 years.

No but the Thai airports are not accepting Roubles for refuelling the planes.

They are useful as toilet paper though. Just a pity they don't have Putins face on them.

It's easy to complain. But I would like to see you 2 how much you would put up your mouth against putin when you were a russian and stay in Russia.

To complain about Putin from another Country is easy. To be honest I think both of you would be silent and say nothing at all, when you were in Russia!

Sometimes I have the feeling that some members here have lost reality!

complete rubbish. Trump did everything in his power and then some to appease Putin and harm NATO.

Friends in the Military here and in a few countries are drawing similarities between now and back in 1936 with Germany and Japan allying together.  Now they are indicating it appears that China and North Korea are backing Russia and it is only a matter of time until this escalates.  Tourism should be the last worry right now of certain countries.....

Who do you think are killing Ukranian women and children. Not the Russian Government it's Russian people.

Just going by the saying, it’s all in the eyes, from what I’ve seen of Putin lately, I think he might be heading for Siberia in a straight jacket before long.

Exactly. We don't know how individual Russians feel about Putin invading Ukraine. The attitude of so many here reflects how pathetic their own lives are, that they have to use this tragedy to give themselves the illusion of moral superiority and feel better about whatever country they have crawled away from. Honestly, it's pathetic.

You can hate the man and what he's as doing, but your racist rants clearly show you aren't the type of people you would like others to think you are.

Next thing will be an "accident" at one of those Nuclear power plants, a stray shell? and he won't need to hit the button, or be blamed for doing so.

Any Russians should be deported for their own safety as attitudes are becoming very hostile to ALL things Russian.Send them home, Putins mess, let him take care of them.

That doesn’t seem right. Not sure how it exactly relates to average wage, but according to World Bank website, net national income per capita in $US in 2019 was $8,940 in Russia, $6,069 in Thailand and $1,822 in India. Same rough ratios for GDP per capita in CIA World Factbook. Of course, that doesn’t account for the collapse in the rouble, or likely effect of ongoing sanctions.

The Russian Government could care less for their people that are stranded.  And now Thailand is feeling sorry for those!  Why did they let them in in the first place?  If they paid in Rubles, then the Thai businesses are at a loss when they go to exchange the Russian funds for bahts.  A country (Thailand) that has their head in the sands, bunch of ostriches!

Well said, Trump and Putin respected each other. After Biden"s devastating pull out of Afghanistan, it only emboldened Putin!!

Trump ordered the pullout before the election. Biden decided not to reverse it. Maybe some people should read more fact based media.

The Trump administration in February 2020 negotiated a withdrawal agreement with the Taliban that excluded the Afghan government, freed 5,000 imprisoned Taliban soldiers and set a date certain of May 1, 2021, for the final withdrawal.

Would be interesting to know the number of Russian tourists  currently in Thailand

Phuket pattaya ect

I take it Immigration know these numbers and are taking action in sorting out visas travel hotels and flights out  if any ????

Send them to Myanmar.

The Russians are helping support  that Junta's horrific regime.

What size is this silent majority? Does it only exclude the people who openly join protests against the invasion? What about the ones who are too scared to join? Does it factor in the effect that Putin has all but cut off outside news sources, and so people are almost elusively hearing Puting wants them too? I would wager that you don't know. Neither do I. But if we all become a bunch of racist bigots, we are only going to make Putin's job easier.

I think it has become very clear recently that their so called and incorrectly named mighty military is completely and utterly over stated, it is a complete shambles, they wouldn't last a week against the highly capable western military, I had a laugh a few days ago a video clip of a Ukraine farmer stealing a mighty Russian tank with his tactor towing it down the road with a Russian soldier chasing after it,  or the guy in the car driving past a Stalled convoy rolling down his window and offering to tow them back to Russia....too funny

What I would like to see is Ukraine airforce dropping a few bombs in Russia to see how they like it, the US did something similar on Japan early in the 2nd WW, they sent bombers on a one way mission to bomb Japan, there was a movie based on that operation

Great idea!

I bet they're shi##ing themselves about money, property and possessions in foreign countries at the moment.

I wonder what Malta is doing at the moment, that was a favourite country for Russians to buy a passport and gain free entry in Europe.

I think that Cyprus is now the place they prefer tostash some Money.

has been for several Years now.

Perhaps the Russian government should charter a plane from Phuket or Bangkok and fly it to Tbilsi, Georgia and then they can bus it from there back to Moscow or wherever else they need to go in Russia.

Option 2 would be to charter a plane to Bucharest, Romania and then they could take a bus across Ukraine to Moscow.  I'm sure it would be an interesting bus ride.

While there are no Russian planes flying, there are several flights to Russia with one stop (e.g, Qatar, Emirates or Etihad are still flying there). Russians are not really stranded in Thailand due to lack of flights, but they may be due to to banking issues, inability to use Russian credit cards, the crash of their currency.

I think there is not any problem with them, they always have their gold jewelry with them.

How are these folks returning to Russia?

I guess there are some options by EK?

Korean Air just halted all russian flights for two weeks; their refueling supplier suspended their service.

True and so tragic. Such a bright future after 'glasnost'. Then there was with the tearing down of the iron curtain the real and present hope of Russia becoming a part of the European family with a world opened and reunited.

Then Putin manoeuvred, connived, weaselled his way into power and look what happened ... the 180 degree turn back into a rising of neo-Stalinism.

Such a tragedy for the Russian people. A history of such unspeakable. An ancient, protracted antisemitic history that almost rivals the Nazis (except the Nazis did it in a shorter period of time) and hardship and sorrow in that nation, the persecution and slavery of all but a tiny section of the populace under their feudal lords prior to the Revolution.
