He didn't need to cheat, he had massive popular support. Russian image and morale was at the lowest after the Yeltsin years. Putin managed to restore somewhat the economy, and made the Russians feel like they were back to their lost Soviet glory, when they could terrorize the planet.

I have to say that I disagree with you. The people with whom I have communicated with in Russia, who are all under 50, seem to think it's all the fault of Ukraine and that Russia is the good guy in this scenario. They have no idea of what is really happening and pointedly don't want to discuss it nor entertain any kind of alternative viewpoint. Brainwashed is the term.

Who treats them like second class citizens? I haven't ever seen that anywhere. They are judged on their behaviour; just like anyone else.

Nato is threatening us

Isn't it rather recent to be called visceral? There appears to be a lack of humanity from those guys too... bombing a children's/ maternity hospital, and civilians trying to evacuate.....poisoning political opponents anywhere in the world, imprisoning dissenters who are 15yo.....

It has been going on for too long and Russia needs to show humanity instead of a brutal iron fist. The rest of Europe gives Ukrainians refuge while Russia makes refugees or corpses out of them.....

You may have a point, how many Thais do you think would like to overthrow the unelected PM here in Thailand and the rest of his Junta?  Thailands recent history will tell you about their soldiers murdering protesting students in the past.
