Is 250thb fair for haircut?

With wife away I got my hair cut at a salon nearby. Usually I do the front and the wife tidies the back using a No2 all around. No scissors and it takes 5 mins. But this time at the salon they put me through the robotic routine despite explaining what I wanted. Shampoo and condition hair first. The machine cutting and grooming followed by another wash. (The hair is cut from 1cm to about 0.5cm). I cracked when she wrapped my head in towel before escorting me to the final grooming. All in all about 1.5hours. Not complaining just remarking how a 5min job at home (or in West) takes so much longer with so many steps.

WHAT!!!....Just paid 60 baht......the Thai guy who walked in just before me let me go first, so I paid for his as well.....last of the big spenders.

  • A salon cut will indeed cost about that much (or more).  Most male just get a haircut at a barber shop which will be about 60-150 baht and takes about 10-15 minutes.

  • And usually looks as if the cat has chewed it

Scammed. For 250 baht I would be expecting to get trimmed "downstairs" as well.

Buy a 850 baht electric clipper and have a crack at it yourself. Instant hansum man????

I pay 100Bt.   Pretty much the same as the OP gets at home.  #2 shoe around and around then some final clean up with the clippers and razor.  +/- 10 minutes.   For all the extras you got (plus 1.5 hrs. of special attention) that is probably not completely out of line.

100 baht in bkk but salon and trendy places charge up to 400, most expensive is the one at the Emporium 1.000 baht. I was told locally they agree on price rises and anyone not complying is pressed to go along with it

Hansum men pay less.......LOL

In Bangkok you can expect to pay up to 400 baht in a proper salon.  Between 100-200 baht in a barbers.

Not scammed, you pay more in a trendy salon (250 thb is fairly cheap for one) then at a cheap barber. Have a look what people pay in the West in a trendy salon. It takes so long as they want to give you "value" for money.

This breaking news just in; Beauty salons cost more than barber shops.

When you ask the question, you know the answer already.  I tip 20 baht so it's either 100 or 120.

Your gut feeling is almost never wrong.   Don't worry, we have all been scammed, and we all know it immediately.

We also all know when we get a good deal.   OK, you got scammed 100 baht.....maybe you got an amulet for 30000 that is really worth 100000000000000000000000000000000 baht.

1.5 hours should have just enjoyed it and very low in price but a lot of attention.

Scared to ask.......but why do so many of the hairdressers smocks have a clear window in the crotch area.........?????

250?  At a simple barber shop probably.  But at a salon probably not.  I was in Los Angeles last month and a simple haircut at barber shop was $18(about 600 Baht) so I won't complain about the cost of a haircut in LOS.

Fair call. Probably not scammed but sounds like OP didn't explain his request and set a price.

Anyhow, it seems like he enjoyed and that can't be all bad????.

Just paid 400 for a basic haircut at a walk-in barbershop in Ari. Even at that price, the place had a continuous flow of customers with 2 or 3 on the waitlist for their 6 stations. Mostly local young men in their 20s and 30s. The place is raking it in big time. As for the haircut, no different than my normal 5-minute 120 baht cuts except the butt-in-chair time here was longer. The barber was careful and deliberate (slow) for the similar result. I noticed these 300-400 baht barbershops are cropping up everywhere now.

Most guys i see have little hair so can't see why they would pay more than 100 baht. I pay 80-100 baht + 20 tip for a no.2, i gave up on scissors they aren't very good with them, it scares them

Wow, 300thb+ 100 THB tip and out the door….????????

p.s. wash and <deleted> included ????

Take a walk past a bar and listen to how many more of the girls shout out ‘hansum maaaaan’ ????

Most barber shops charge 100 baht just for hair cut.

More money if you want shampoo as well.

My local barber charges THB 70. I give her 100, which includes a tip.

That depends where you are...

Most around me charge 200-400 baht (Bangkok)...   there are a few non-AC places deep into the sub-soi which I imagine are cheaper.

I’m happy to pay 300 baht for a 20min wash-cut-wash....  they do a decent enough job.

Thanks for the feedback. Lessons learned:

1) 250 at salon is ok.

2) barber would’ve been a more sensible choice in my situation.

3) I’m hansum now.

4) you can ask Thais what you want. Don’t expect it.
5) continue DIY

My local barber put his prices up last year, from 60 to 70baht.

I normally give him a 20 baht tip and an extra 10 baht each for his 2 children.
