"....never happen in Thailand"....???  What a ridiculous comment.  Have you even been to Thailand?  You can go to any major chain establishment and get change for a 1,000 bt bill on any purchase.  But common sense says if you go to the market and try to use a 1k bill for a 40 bt purchase, the vendor may have issues.  My experience is that the vendor will ask another vendor if they have change.  Anyways, better that you stay in America as you seem to have little understanding of how things are in a foreign country.

According to a 2019 report by the Federal Reserve, 22% of American adults (63 million) are either unbanked or underbanked.

 

They dont want to hold it all in singles ????

As far as having no choice, you have a choice when you get cash, I never get larger than a $20 bill when getting cash. Most shops if you try to pay with a $100 bill you will be directed to the ATM they all have and instructed to get smaller bills.

And as others have said using plastic is often more convenient for everybody..

 

Back in the day, cash was legal tender (that might vary, country to country), and could be used for settling all monetary debts.  I am not so sure about any obligation to provide change.

I suppose a person could bring their attorney with them when they go to 7-11 to buy a cup of coffee with a $100 bill.

Did I mentioned a cheesburger? No I did not. Maybe you live in the wrong part of Australia I went to Hungry Jacks yesterday and bought a hamburger with small chips (fries) and a soft drink for AUD 6.55

I'm trying to remember the last time I actually have anything more than a few bucks in my wallet, if that!.

 

Delivery its all online, vending machines, stores its all either online or debit/credit tap or chip stuff.

 

I certainly have no idea the last time I saw anything over a $5 bill let alone $100 bill

Not everybody has a smart phone, bank account or mobile banking app.

 

The majority of Thais that live outside of the cities and big towns use cash and rarely order food to be delivered.

 

Out in the villages probably the only food to be delivered is from 7/11

Actually you are not a dinosaur.

 

Many people who live outside the big cities don't pay electronically. The ones that do, think they are superior to those who don't.

I think it's just plain rude to go into a small shop or market stall, especially early in the day and expect the vendor/owner to be able to provide change for 1000 baht for a small purchase. 

 

When we lived in the U.S., I sold plants at Farmers' Markets and hated it when a customer showed up at 6:30 am, while I was still setting up our display and wanted to buy one plant, expecting change for $100.  Sure, toward the end of the day, I would have welcomed the $100 as a way to consolidate all the $20 bills I'd accumulated during the day, but not at 6:30 am.

 

Now that we're retired in Thailand, Hubby goes to Bangkok Bank each week and gets 100 baht and 20 baht notes that we use in our daily purchases.  We always try to pay as close to the amount of the purchase as possible when we buy things.  For one thing, it eliminates confusion about whether the correct change was given.

I was just there for a month and seldom used cash.

 

Go to Switzerland and break a 1000 at the bar for a couple of beers - never had an issue

Thais like  the  Chinese use  phone apps these days.  I rarely  have a problem getting change except from small street vendor but never at stores. But it's GREAT to hear  a happy positive  story from a returnee. Makes me think twice about my  retirement plans I might quit here.... - In the UK we use touch and go bank cards a lot - on my last visit I simply went out without cash money - I had  to remember  to bring small change out with me for the street beggars hugging the ATMs for warmth
