despite the centuries-long tensions between the Russian and Catholic Orthodox churches.

Where did the writer get this from. There is very little difference between the ideologies of the churches except for some obscure doctrine that led to disagreement over 1000 years ago.

It has been reported that the Russian church supports Putin but with all the BS around these days who would know.

NATO is striving for peace in the world.

Peace through expansion! Is a little bit more correct statement! But to keep peace war is a tool ????

since october vatican is spooked by nuclear threat, armageddon in Biden's speech and calls for ceasefire and offers mediation.

In yesterday's open letter pope asks kiev again for concessions to get peace deal.

For vatican it's now beyond who provoked the war. Points to lives Ukraine is losing and economical damage.

but kiev is not having any of it. Calls vatican embassador in kiev for pope's remark, that assassination of a journalist Daria Dugina done by death squat in Moscow, was a senseless act on an innocent person.

It looks like kiev doesn't want diplomatic solution and they believe they can win on battlefield.

There was a peace deal at the very beginning of April, which was allegedly torpedoed by boris johnson's secret visit to kiev.

vatican pushes for a diplomatic solution, offering help with mediation.

Even more so after escalation to nuclear threats.

That article is from 3 days ago, editorial from an official vatican paper

what I wanted to show is an example, that kiev is not into tolerating even pope's small remark about killing of moscow journalist.

It unnecessarily strains relations with vatican. But also such actions strain relations with the USA, showing ukraine as a rogue country

He's right.

Agreed, from Oct

Pope Francis has for the first time directly appealed to Russia’s President Vladimir Putin to stop the “spiral of violence and death” in Ukraine, saying he is haunted by “rivers of blood and tears”.

The head of the Catholic Church also condemned the annexation of four regions of Ukraine, saying it risked nuclear escalation and urged Putin to think of his own people during an address dedicated to Ukraine in St Peter’s Square.

“I strongly deplore the grave situation that has been created in the last few days, with more actions that are contrary to the principles of international law,” Francis said in a clear reference to the annexation.

Pure speculation.

It could be that the Pope initially thought that he would be joined in his call for peace by part of the Russian orthodox Church. However, most of the Russian orthodox church is still in holy war mode, so this tactic has been proven useless.

Also Angela Merkel in her recent interview with Der Spiegel expressed her disappointment that she could not persuade - in her last ruling days - the other EU leaders for an independent European discussion format thru European Council with Putin.

Because, by then, the MInsk agreements were eroded. That's why the Russian-Ukraine conflict did not come as a surprise...
