Khao San Road: Marijuana seller told to get a permit - officials confirm selling weed is legal

Officials from the Phra Nakorn district office and Chanasongkram Police station were out in Khao San Road yesterday making sure that all traders had the required permits to sell on the street.

 

One that didn't was a marijuana trader who would roll up joints for his customers on the popular tourist street.

 

Watthawee Thaweewat or "Dave", 36, was told that he needed a licence from the local office as all people did who sell anything on the street.

 

He was told to go and get one and warned that he'd be fined 2,000 next time if he didn't have a licence. 

 

Local district director Wasan Bunmeaunwai said that there was no problem with people openly selling weed on the streets - it was all perfectly legal now but everyone needs to have a permit to sell no matter what it is.

 

He was accompanied by Pol Col Tharadol Hemmaphat from the police station just around the corner who also took no action.

 

Dave said as soon as weed was legalized he sold his organic marijuana in Pattaya for a day then moved to Khao San. He was moving around to several locations in the area so as not to annoy other male and female traders selling weed on the street.

 

He said he had one strain called "Nock Charlotte" (transliterated from Thai and possibly incorrect) for 450 baht a gram and what he called Hang Krarok (Squirrel Tail) or Thai Stick for just 200 baht. He was happy to roll his wares up into joints for his customers free of charge.

 

He then told Siam Rath that he was off to the district office to get a permit.

On more than one occasion you have stated your opinion towards legalization. Maybe you think it is better to keep locking up people for years and ruining their lives over something that should have never been criminalized. Sometimes it is better not to voice your opinion on some matters and on this one, I think you should stick to my suggestion.

Why not?

A tourist spending money, is a tourist spending money.

They all pay for transport, food and accommodation.

 

Their entertainment, be it trips, beer, hookers or weed ..... what's the difference?

Hopefully, it'll make a nice change from the miserable alcoholic pensioners that line the back Sois of Pattaya. ????

It may also show the world that Thailand is progressive, tolerant to others and that we are not all dinosaurs over here.

All i'm saying is that Thailand could have many other things to better the lives of its people and to encourage tourism other than legalising pot, it wasn't a priority...

Legalize substance will be a boon for tourism. Just ask Tropico 5. But it doesn't work so well with a smoking ban activated too. Hosting the Olympics and free wifi also help.

I don't see a problem - yet. Been one myself for over 50 years and have yet to see potheads causing much trouble.  Alcoholics on the other hand, seem to do the most damage to society...  I could be wrong, but I don't think I am.

Well sadly  its been a mecca for alcoholic, geriatric, paedophiles  for far too long. The Thai government has obviously decided that responsible cannabis users are more desirable and who can blame them.  The mainstream media also seems to have gone quiet recently, as the predicted  horrors and breakdown of society  have not materialised, despite their best efforts You are just going to have to accept it and stop the continuous moaning. Nobody is forcing you to smoke it and, therefore it will have absolutely no effect for you.

I  am just wondering what is your definition of "quality tourists" ?   Have you ever asked yourself what is the basis for your obvious objection to cannabis and the users of it , It surely can only be as a direct result of the mainly American government issued propaganda over the last 80 years or so. 

                So do you think you need to lock up your daughters ? Or maybe you are scared of Communists, Mexicans, Negroes, Jazz musicians and anti Vietnam war demonstrators? as these were the people that  the anti cannabis campaign was intended to, and successfully  vilified for years Further more posting your objections to the new and enlightened cannabis legislation on here isn't going to change anything.  Get over it

I'd agree that most of the time there is no problem but why am I seeing cars on the expressway chugging along at 60kph in the right hand lane with a clear road ahead. Pothead at the wheel no doubt.

No problem?  Well, it just started, didn´t it? The majority of the pot smokers will not be old men sitting in their condos.  Youth get so curious and excited about this.

So, hope you and everyone stays safe.  But hey, if some young dude on a motorcycle hopped up on mind numbing weed crashes into you or a family member, please don´t come on here and complain as you are an obvious supporter of pot in Thailand.

Of course this could all be part of the "Revive and modernise Khao San Road" project masterplan. Those bollards etc. they installed killed it's previous incarnation. It seems to be working as all sorts are crawling out of their holes.

The People decide how a legal product is used..

 

Some legal products are regulated. I expect cannabis will be regulated similar to alcohol and tobacco but less than firearms.

Seems you've arrived Thailand after June 9th and think this is because of potheads. But actually it's been this way long before pot was legal
