Bar Girl Retirement Strategies

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

Most bargirls have a "sell by" date around age 40, and most are aware of imminent forced retirement. There are a few who can continue to work bar into their 40s, but they are exceptional. So, bargirls start to think about retirement at some point in their 30s. Among the chief strategies :

Marry a Farang. This is Plan A for many, but it has drawbacks. For one thing, its not easy to live with someone you don't love, for a long time. I have run into former bargirls who married for money, and its not pretty, especially when assets have already been transferred to them. Some deride their spouses, while others can maintain a facade of respect, especially if there are more assets to be transferred to them. Another problem is how to continue to see their Thai boyfriend. That can often mean letting the Farang husband go to bars, while they visit their " brother".

Another common plan is to open a shop or restaurant back home. These have a high failure rate, and the bargirl returns to the bar after a few months. Strangely, working in a bar is poor preparation for running a business.

Working massage for another 10 years is common. They can tell their Thai husband that they only massage, no boom-boom.

Not stopping work is another strategy.  This often has tragic results, as the bargirl has ever fewer customers. At some point, their Thai boyfriend will leave, as the money runs out, and he is forced to find a better cash cow.

Another strategy: get a regular day job. Since factories don't hire older ladies, this is not common. Or the lady may get a low paying job at a shop, and go out to Beach Road after work, to get one customer before she goes home.

Really uncommon: a bargirl who saved for retirement.

Not so many have planned for retirement.

Many send money to their family, but when they want to retire, that money is gone. The number of people in Isaan who gamble is incredible.

Hi-Lo Anyone.  Had a friend in Wang Sam Mo, who went to visit his sick mother in the UK, upon his return 2 months later the house had someone new living in it.  When he tracked down his Thai Wife, village ceremony only. she told him she lost the house in a Hi-Lo game.  Your home is not really your home in a village he found out.  His Thai Wife then went back to Phuket and back to the bar he had found her in, but as you said her sell by date was past due, and instead she became the cashier, and second to the mamasan, owner, as she had worked for 20 years in the bar prior to leaving the business.  My friend, who now did not have anything left in Thailand, as he always rented a car here, moved to the Phils.  He is a happy man now, but still gets ticked off at the thought of loosing a house, well large bungalow, he paid for.

No different than a non bar girl, if she thinks her only asset is her looks.

You do not have a great knowledge of Thailand, do you?

As @Farmerslife posted above. Most of the bargirls have a house in their home village to come back to, as they both send money to family and occasionally go home and build the on the house. You have also heard too many stories about the so called "brother". I would say that 50 % might have a husband and 50 % not.

Also very wrong about that factories do not hire older ladies. In that case they have no problem in employing  people up to around 55. However, as I say, most have planned and have a house as well as farm land to come back to. You can´t be more wrong.

dude you really need to get away from the BG scene. it's not the be-all and end-all. quit flogging the long-dead horse.

The first one I moved in with had nothing but a 1mbht mortgage she couldn't pay. Married an old Dutch guy that built a resort on her land and got fat.

The second one I moved in with had a 5rai rice farm with the chanote used as collateral by her mom on a 100kbht loan from a shark.

So from my experience they seem to end up with nothing. The ones that accumulate assets are fairly rare IMHO.

Bar girls are for fun...not for settling down with....never met a BG here in Patts yet that comes from the South of Thailand...different areas different attitudes.

Factories may continue to have long term employees long after they hit 35, but not many hire new ladies after age 35.

Not a valuable post. Perhaps you have a better take on bargirl retirement strategies. Maybe "marry an old Farang and live happily ever after. Not see Thai husband anymore."

But IMHO he is spot on. This post seems like a time warp. Should have been written say 25 or 30 years ago. The clever girls are now out of the trade and on Tinder. Not meaning to be harsh. But there is a whole great world of women outside the bar scene. You also can't dictate the response to a post mate.

You think a prostitute working Tinder is in some way better than a prostitute working bar?

Bars need cashiers, mamasans, and wait staff.  Massage shops are filled with older ladies that used to work bars.

Bar girls don't worry about my retirement plan and I don't worry about theirs.

I in no way said that. I said the clever girls are on Tinder. Why work when you dont have to? Its simply an observation.

Yeah, I forgot about cashiers. But, bars generally only have one or two cashiers, so not so many jobs. And much lower salary.

Really?

Maybe they should do this but IMHO very few actually do it. Or maybe they just "think" they will marry a rich farang in their late 30th.

The top 1% can money online, after that, money for online work drops considerably.

Another strategy

Now I finished reading your post.

"strategy"? When did you ever meet a bar girl (or almost any Thai person) with a long term strategy?

As far as I can tell best case they think up to the next payday. And many don't even do that.

Or maybe the strategy is to win in the lottery or something like that.

Maybe we could discuss what they should think about for their future lives. But it doesn't really matter what we think or what we may even suggest to them because likely they won't even try to think about this by themselves.

And then there is obviously that women problem that when they are young life looks good and full of opportunities. And not surprisingly they don't realize that for them their opportunities in life will be soon fewer and fewer. According to studies the top age for women is 23. That is the most desirable age for them. Any year older makes them less attractive for men. It's a fact, but I am pretty sure most 24 year old women don't realize that they are getting old and they will never have the same opportunities again.

Maybe you missed the part that many girls enjoy their time in the bars.

Drinking, smoking, dancing, chatting with their friends and having farangs to pay for everything.

Lots of girls who worked in bars go back there to have fun even after they found a rich sponsor who tried to take them out of the bar.

I know a lady who makes big money on OnlyFans and has multiple sponsors, but she still hits the bars to meet her lady friends.

Except that someone in the family put a note on the Chanote for one million baht, blew the money on gambling, and now the lady has to work bar again.

If they don't drink/drugs or gamble, then 5yr plan as bar gal should secure a nice retirement.  One ex, had millions of baht (not mine) pass through her hands, and into the bottle, lottery & card games.  Now has nothing.

Present wife helped sell the first house for tidy profit, bought land & contracted the 2nd house, with my tutoring, and made excellent profit.  She now downsized to new house w/solar & small parcel of land next door for farming.  So now sits on nice bank account, and nice house that is self sufficient, w/no mortgage.   Technically -0- operating cost, since solar & collect rain water.  Though 150 a month for water isn't going to set anyone back.

All we need to do is feed ourselves.  She/we planned it that way, as any bar or non bar gal can do also, and have a nice retirement.  Just take a wee bit of planning and a brain.

If chickies marry well, expat or Thai, then like myself, subtract mandatory food bill, and we could actually save 50+k baht a month.  Since living on less than 20k is easy and quite comfy. So every year is another 1/2 mill to her retirement fund, and that's with a few out & about paid for.

No reason for anyone to be skint here on a retirement visa, or spouse/GF, left hanging empty handed after we pass on.  Unless you rent & buy a bunch of depreciating sh!t you don't need, while trying to impress people who could give two sh!ts about you.  Same same, not different worldwide.

10k a month after I c r a p out, and only 1 mill in the bank is good for 8.3 years.  She could easily live on 10k a month.  If I live 10 more years, that's a possible 5 more mill in the bank, so 40 more years of living expense, on top of what she has now, and she's only/all ready 45 yrs old.

Living is Easy .... People make it hard.

I know two former bargirls who “retired” to Isaan to live with their husbands 5 years ago, but came back this month to work in Pattaya. I got them jobs working cashier.

No money in Isaan.

How much does she give to her family every month?

6 minutes ago, Danderman123 said:

-0- ... they all have more assets than her.  She's the poor baby of the family.  Her parents died when very young, and most siblings (8) are all retired.  30 yr span between her & the oldest sibling.

One brother, working in USA, just gave her a rai of land, back in the home province, NBLP.   Fronts a lake, and I think he's trying to start a family commune when he comes back, soon.  Giving everyone a rai, from a 70 rai farm he has there.

Might put one of them cheap knock down houses on it, for holiday place when wanting to visit family.
