Thai Police considering “sub-law” for limiting number of pickup truck passengers

The Royal Thai Police is considering issuing a traffic sub-law of no more than three passengers allowed to be sitting in the back seats of a pickup truck and no more than six passengers allowed in a cargo bed.

 

Police General Damrongsak Kittipraphat, the deputy national police chief, stated during a road traffic conference on Friday, August 19th, that the Royal Thai Police is in discussion with the Department of Land Transport to enact a sub-law for pickup truck users and passengers under the same Road Traffic Act (No. 13) which order all passengers in vehicles to wear seat belts throughout the journey, to be effective on September 5th.

 

The draft will prohibit more than three passengers from sitting in the back seats of pickup trucks for safety as most of them did not provide proper seat belts. Additionally, the number of passengers sitting in the pickup’s cargo bed will be limited to a maximum of six people, and sitting at the cargo rear will be strongly prohibited.

Not sure why there should be a limit, you can clearly see riding in the bed of a pickup truck provides far more protection than on a motorcycle here in Thailand

Either a law is a law or it is not!

Could reduce it even further by enforcing existing laws !!

They already have laws for too many people on a motorbike ! They don’t enforce it. Sad

It probably just means that it will be advisory, not mandatory so the police don't have to actually in force it, unless they are short of cash or the perpetrators are farangs...

They call the 2 door pickups back seats cargo rear,  they don't have seatbels fitted as standard.

So you can have 3 children in the rear cargo, six children in the bed legally that's 9 unrestrained children in one vehicle.  But if you have one five year old wairing a seat belt in the back of a car not in a child seat you can be fined.

I've seen school mini buses up here with about twenty kids sitting on bench seats going length ways with nothing at all to hold on to.

All new laws are enacted to benefit the police.  They then decide which to enforce and when  and on who(m?).

I'm sure a while back they said they were making it illegal to ride in the cargo bed. My wife mentioned it as well and I said I thought it was already illegal but not enforced.
