Thailand is now welcoming applications for its new 10 year Long-term Resident Visa (LTR Visa), which is aimed at attracting foreigners of “high potential” to live and work in the country.

 

The LTR Visa formally came into effect on September 1, with the government seeing the program as a way to encourage new investment into the country.

 

The 10 year LTR visa will be offered across four categories: Wealthy Global Citizens, Wealthy Pensioners, Work-from-Thailand Professionals, and Highly-Skilled Professionals.

 

Across each of the four categories, holders will need a personal income of USD 80,000/year.

False advertising, as it isn't a 10 years visa. It is merely a "twice 5 years" visa, that requires a full verification the 5 years renewal.

Some seriously bitter people who can not accept the new visa class as it is. Did you all  become moaners when they created the O-X visa which folks use.....

Has anyone looked into this more deeply? Do you just have to prove the $80k income every 5 years - or is there some income check yearly to maintain the visa?

Retired over a decade ago to a lower cost country since I could not afford a working middle class retirement in my own country. Bring in over a million Thai baht a year and support my Thai Wife and Stepdaughter. A win - win if those incapable of thinking long term stability don't try to grab at only "high worth" individuals. Millions of westerners in the same boat, plus the "sweet spot" of serving medical services (especially appealing to the Americans as they reject a national healthcare program).

Thailand is one of the  easiest countries to retire to, regarding visas. Just <deleted> 800k in the bank once a year, or pay an agent 14,000 baht a year for an illegal visa. 

I, as a Thai, woukd have to invest 17 million baht to get a similar visa in the USA 

Yet, many complain about immigration. 

 

Figures identical to above post.  Why can't the Thai Gov realise where their future lies?  Are they too intent on feathering their own nests?  Allow retirees to own their own home and see what Malaysia are doing.

Still not sure how this is better than Thailand Elite, if you just want to retire here.

 

Also, how do wealthy individuals who do not draw income or a pension, but rather live on their savings, show income?  It could discriminate against retirees with 10s of millions sitting in CDs or such.

You need to understand something. Each of Prawit's watches costs more than you'd bring into Thailand in a lifetime.

You need to look at it from Thai politician's perspective. Farang rich. Farang love Thailand. Farang must pay.

 

PS: And your wife and stepdaughter are quite high maintenance if they cost you over a million a year.

A blunt statement that is inaccurate really..... firstly it is not a visa, and secondly, I question if it is illegal. 14,000 is very reasonable too....

But your point is valid.... Thailand is easy to retire to.

Really just under 3k USD a month means after paying his expenses here his family is high maintenance? Really  you must live like a Thai. I spend close to 2 million Baht a year and live comfortably.

Love this comment. I can, as well, not understand why people complain when they deliver more possibilities. That it doesn´t fit all, is common. Same like every person does not buy the same washing machine.

But, the fact is, nothing has been taken away. Just another option added, and there is a lot of fools complaining. Hilarious!

What is your problem?

There's a visa for people like you already, in fact there are many: marriage visa, child support visa, retirement visa etc...

Here's another visa, for other people, why on earth does this bother you?

Some pensioners do make more than 80k USD, but then those are in the minority.

Its a stamp on your passport that allows you to stay in the country. 

Is bypassing immigration requirements, of course that is illegal. 

Total waste of time and money. The 1 year renewable visa takes about 30 mins once a year at Immigration if you've prepared the documents. Costs peanuts. This govt are such scamsters. Quite a few wealthy friends currently overseas  have looked into it and decided its worthless.

Many are retired here, they can't find the 30 minutes every year.

So do I but it is you who lives comfortably, not only your girlfriend.

THailand and visas... and visas and regulations, more and more ... and money always money....but no investigation of whta foreigners wants or need to make it simple for retire or long stay in Thailand, 90 days, adress confirmations, annual renewals, proof of adresses etc etc...

Plenty of ways to get in and stay in Thailand already. Certainly getting to live here is easier than in most countries. Now the govt is adding one more way....but not doing away with any of the already-existing methods.

 

So what's to complain? Pick the one that works for you if you are so inclined to live here, and let others do the same.

 

None of these methods is onerous. I'm actually surprised some of the methods are as easy as they are. Most countries, if they allow expat residents, expect a much greater economic contribution than what Thailand expects. 800K baht in a bank? $80K/year income?

 

Those are the two extremes, and neither is even close to what many countries demand, including for Thais who might seek to retire to the US or EU or Australia (heaven knows why).

 

I often hear or read comments from people who beef about migrants coming to their country, yet these same people, many of whom make scant economic contribution to the Thai economy ( a million baht in a year isn't a rounding error in the expenses of a senior politician or those making the rules here), seem to think it's unfair if the Thai govt makes it more difficult for these expats to remain in Thailand.

 

Keep quiet and enjoy the ease with which Thailand makes residence possible.

Sawatdee, Khun Neeranam. I was raised working blue collar in USA (Dad was a welder, later a warehouse foreman). As a “Baby Boomer”, my generation got to go to college and then more. I retired in 2011 as a Professor Emeritus of History. Nonetheless, my sustainable monthly retirement income is $2400.00 USD (half is from earned US Social Security). To supplement the SS, I draw from my invested retirement funds. Thus, I use the 65,000 baht per month income method. My U.S. funds are invested and earning me income, thus I think withdrawing the amount equivalent to 800K to park in into a Thai bank is not the wisest financial decision. I will add that I have a Thai Wife and Thai Stepdaughter.

I am aware but it is of no concern to me. I fear the 65K a month is, in large measure spent on farang food and some travel.

1,900 baht works ok for me.

Now if they did that for a ten year visa / extension of stay  ( 19,000 ) that would be worth a punt. 

Don't pay agents,  they are just making a monkey out of you.
