Agree. But even more so in this case.  My understanding is that Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and emphysema doesn't happen ovenight. I have freinds who suffer from similar conditions and refuse to change their lifestyle and get help. 77 years old, fixed in his own world, wants to live in warm climate, doesn't want to change, hoping negative things will just go away by themselves. I have more sympathy for his daughter. Just my opinion and I could be 100% wrong in this matter.

with health problems that WILL eventually need hospitalization, why would you go to Thailand, when you have the 'excellent' universal healthcare in the UK.  Well, at least it's almost free anyway.  Now you're a burden to your family, IF, they decide to pay the bill.

I quite agree.  A UK nursing home is not for me either.

 

I'm a firm believer that on the day you are born, your exit date is already on the calendar.  The bit in the middle is just a hurdle race with plenty of fences to jump.

 

I have no complaints about my life, so whatever I have to look forward to, bring it on!

When you are 77 years old with COPD and Emphysema it is unlikely Medical Insurance with cover you.

Once you hit over the 70 mark the insurance cover is out of reach for most of us I was quoted 200,000+ for a year and that was me having to pay the first 100,000 . I choose to keep a million baht just in case of a health emergency but if I’m honest and my health was so bad that I couldn’t enjoy life I’d take myself to bed with a bottle of Jamie’s and some tabs to help me climb the stairway to heaven .

I suffer from COPD and yes you can get it from smoking and 2nd hand smoke so bars need to be given a wide miss.....Almost any dust will create problems and exhaust fumes are a special no no.....You need to live in an area where the air is quite clean

And BTW have you tried to buy insurance when you are over 75 and have COPD.....makes your eyes water if they even come back with a quote......many dont.....

A friend of mine always said insurance companies will only give you an umbrella on a fine day and its pretty close to the mark

He would of been lucky if he got £150 per week in the late 60s early 70s playing for Shrewsbury Town I bet there average gate was less than 10,000 supporters per week if that

Yes, and over the last few years they have got "worse" I was quoted a 12,000 baht fee for a simple procedure in a Government hospital, but by the time they added on all the "extras" it came to about 18,000 baht - only 1900 baht less than  Bumrungrad charge for the full package!

What do you expect? Insurance companies are not charities. If one is old and has something like COPD, the insurance actuaries have a pretty good idea what the hopeful policy holder is going to cost them, so they will charge accordingly.

 

What you are suggesting is a freebie. That others' will pay for you. In what universe does that make economic sense?

 

Anyone young and healthy reading this: NOW is the time to book a policy. You don't try to get fire insurance when your house is already burning.

 

Oh, and don't take up smoking. You are not immortal. Chances are it will kill you, and it will also make your last years not only come faster than they would otherwise, those last year will likely suck. Yes, your grandad smoked since he was 12 and lived to 98. One person also won the $1.4 billion Megamillions lottery.

 

It's never too early to accept responsibility for your own life and well being.

French are covered for free only in France and to some extended conditions in the UE.
Its true we can apply to a gouvernement international heal assurance that have is advantages and some fall back too. But its not free and for many like me the private sector offert better deal.
