CNN needs more than an apology to dig itself out of the grave it dug for itself in Nong Bua Lamphu

The world has been in shock over the past weekend as American broadcasting giant – Cable News Network (CNN), went well beyond it call of duty and willingly entered the crime scene where toddlers were massacred just days ago.

 

CNN’s reporting team entered the crime scene in Nong Bua Lamphu, where on October 6th 24 children were murdered in cold blood by a former police officer, to report what and where the incident took place.

 

Nong Bua Lamphu’s day care center where toddlers as young as 2-years of age were stabbed to death, had been off limits to even Thailand’s Prime Minister – Prayut Chan-o-cha, on October 7th when the Prime Minister went to lay wreath for the deceased, but CNN’s reporters somehow got the ‘permission’ to enter the crime scene.

Interesting twist in the case.

They are cleared for entering the premises but fined for working on tourist visas

Guess they should be en route to US already.

 

Tourist visa should have triggered questions from the beginning. So unprofessional.

When you cover a fast-breaking news story there's no time to apply for a media visa. I'm sure any non-Thailand based reported coming here to cover this story would use visa on arrival/tourist visa. Nothing 'unprofessional' about that.

 

I don't get the witch hunt here: it looks pretty clear - watching Thai language news and 'Big Joke' explaining what happened - that the CNN crew thought they were allowed to go into the building because some local officials said it was okay. Everyone and his dog wears a uniform in Thailand; how were the crew to know the officials weren't authorised to give access? Add language challenges to the mix and away you go.

 

The ethical / moral debate as to whether they should have gone in, regardless of whether they thought they had permission, is another question. As is why the RTP hadn't cordoned off the scene immediately after this obscene incident.

Professional media have their reporter in the region (like BBC) or engage freelancers.

Perhaps they were refused a Press Visa or it just takes too long who knows but I guess they had their reason's.

With big stories a large news organisation will often fly in a regionally-based crew / correspondent (as CNN did here). Very often it's a bad idea to apply for a journalist visa even if there's time because then it flags you as a journalist. That can be a very bad thing if you're trying to report on something sensitive / don't want to be flagged as a journo on arrival.

well, cnn certainly is trash but i find this story ridiculously hypocritical. 1. cnn is not responsible for securing the crime sceen. Unless they snuck in somehow it is not on them but on whoever allowed them in. 2. it is common practice to show gruesome graphic photos in the thai press. Showing a several days old crime scene long after all victims have been removed pales in comparison to some of the picures i have seen published. 

 

just because "netizens" are upset due to this being high profile does not justify making cnn a scapegoat or sacrificial lamb. if someone needs to be crucified let it be whoever gave them access in this case and make it clear to ALL other officials that crime sceen photos is not something the press should be allowed to be taking.

 

it is newsworthy to report on a murder but it is just gratuitous to include photos of a bullet ridden body sprawled out on the ground.

In my book that makes them (Health "Officials") complicit. Also, all of this is very convieniently pulling the focus off the local officials who "Snapped the camels back" by not doing their job on time. He apparently asked for a document by a certain time (As per court instructions) and it was denied.

That was so painful, and cringe-worthy, to read I feel like I'm owed some opiates.

 

And who approved the "grave-digging" analogy? Yikes, talk about tone-deaf, insensitive, and insulting to those who suffered such a tragic loss.

What a lot of hoopla. The Thaienquirer's supercilious reporting is kinda amateurish: Look at us, we'd never report such horrible scenes:

It seems clear that the reporters from CNN made a mistake coming into Thailand on tourists visas and then doing actual business/work. It also seems that the official who gave them permission to cross the line into the crime scene made a mistake.

Its very unfortunate what happened but its been blown out of proportion, by the Thai press, net-citizens!

Photos of a blood soaked floor covered with dead bodies of children and adults were posted to Twitter the day this happened.

 

I saw them. They were posted by Thais.

 

I think CNN are full of <deleted> but what happened here is irrelevant. I could believe that they broke in but as it turns out they didn't - so it's a non story.

Exactly my thaught as well.
Reporters are there to record every inch of what goes wrong with the country and lucky that they have the guts to do it.
No sweeping under the carpet but show to the whole world.

Reports of photos of the poor kids laying in the School were sent on LINE to thais how were these photo's obtained? when they do it they have no regret when its foreigners there quick to object. However I would certainly want to see these pictures. There are even circulating of 2 of the kids ghosts waving to passer-bys already sickening.

How about the actual photos of the dead students leaked out and all over social media.  It must have been from a police officer.
