Should forum members be required to use their real name? Would you still post?

Featured Replies

I received an email from 'The Times' of London that in future, all people who comment on news articles are required to use their real name, as opposed to a pseudonym or nickname.  So I can no longer post as 'Big and Busty'!!

But seriously, if you were required to post using your real name, and not anonymously, would you still post?

For me, it would make no difference whatsoever if I had to post using my real name.  My name and photo are plastered all over the internet, and I certainly have nothing to hide.  I don't seem to have annoyed enough people to get trolled...

But what about you?

I agree with the Times, on Facebook there's too many trolls \ fake profiles, I'd like them removed. Here it's less important as everyone is anonymous, I'd still post if it wasn't anonymous, but the trolls on here wouldn't

Anonymity on the internet will soon be a thing of the past anyway.  China is the pilot scheme for the WEF's Social Credit system of authoritarianism. Anonymity will not be permitted in the new Dystopia.

Coming to a store near you soon.

If it would always be visible who is posting, Would improve some forum.

But on the other hand, with every advantage there is a disadvantage. Some people need to hide their real names (not in a forum like this one), as they would not be safe for them anymore.

Let's assume every government on this world would play fair, then there would be no real reason for hide their real identity of the people doing posts.

I got completely fed up with Facebook so deleted my account many years ago but occasionally I need to use it for things like checking a menu at a restaurant or checking out Facebook market place so have a dummy account on there that I never post anything to.

If they forced me to use my real name I would simply stop using it, same on any internet forum.

If someone would be really interested who this OMF is, then I am sure I left enough information here so that it would be possible to identify me. Ok, no problem. But I would be very surprised if anybody would spend much time on that.

I wouldn't post here anymore with my real name because I want my privacy. I have different circles of people like coworkers, customers, friends with family, guys who like to party, etc. And then there are of course officials in immigration and other places. Should they all be able to know what I write about or think about? NO!

If any of my friends would ask me the same questions which are asked in this forum, then I would likely answer just the same. But if a customer would ask me, or an official, then I would think twice what I should tell them. Politics in one of those things which I would not discuss with most people who I work with. It's called avoiding conflicts.

No.

Real name and other data is reserved for purposes that absolutely require it.

There is a completely derailed German language "Thai" forum. Now a snakepit of conspiracy theorists, outright Nazis, Putin admirers. There were real life threats, threats of violence. Going down steep and now a virtual circle of a dozen or so.

Would I have loved the idea of having real name and data there?

How does "The Times" verify the real name?

I can assure you that my mad ex-wife has been taking her medication and is unlikely to reoffend!

With a family name of Scuba3 I think it was dreadfully unfair of your parents to give you the first name Scuba.

Its not paranoia , although actually  killing someone would be extreme , it hasn't been uncommon for begrudged internet users to cause problems (in real life) for people they get upset with online

Maybe, but if real names are used people tend to be less obnoxious or baiting, so less likely to lead to trouble

Should forum members be required to use their real name?

Absolutely…+ Age, Nationality, and above all…how you wipe your as#

How could they possibly check you were using your real name?

I agree, I've had some weird stalkers, I don't even tell my pals my real name or where I live now. There was also a Brit poster on this forum that tried find your real name so he could dob you in the the DWP and get your state pension frozen.

Me? I don't get a pension. I don't doubt that more then a few would like to ID me though. There's plenty of horrible people like that. I debate hard and give no quarter but most of my friends are Trump lovers and vote right wing. I like to play the ball.

Did it once, got blackmailed for 40k baht by a brothel owner so no. Happily he was shot to death last April after shooting his ex and business partner in Bangkok.

Back in the day, before moderation, I got serious threats from a couple of posters, so anonymity is good.

My name is Thai for anonymity.

I have posted things about my alcoholic, criminal, drug taking past which I wouldn't do if my real name was known as could have serious consequences.

I would not.

Not because I do not want to take responsibility for what I post, but to avoid the stigma of anyone under the age of 50 knowing I am a member here.

I would have though your present day moralistic bent would make up for all that.

I do use my real name, first, as others do, though last name has been changed 3X ...

... trying to stay ahead of Interpol.

I also use my real name (Hugh Hefner), even though I died a while back.

never in 10 billion years.   I'm actually a runway model, my dad is a billionaire, and I just turned 18 so I know everyone on this site would PM me for the next 1000000 zillion years.

been using Facebook with a fake name for years, Tinder fake name, Thai friendly fake name.  OK, on some sites I do use a real, current picture, I'm not trying to .........  catfish I think the young kiddoes call it........  But on this site, no way.   I actually eat lunch with some members, use the loo (I'm definitely a Brit!!!! or not) and troll the guy I'm eating with on here to see his reaction when I get back.

Last time he spit out his 9th beer, fell over backwards in his chair, choked on some fake pork, and passed out for 2 minutes as I eyed his watch.    lol

Remember when yahoo had 10000000k posts, OMG they were hilarious.   Imagine Reddit with real names?  no more comedy.

Facebook is nothing have you looked at Twitter.

Personally I have brought this up on a few other sites and the answer is YES I would welcome using my real name.  The only people that would object Ifear are those that want to hide something.

I wonder how many forum posts will start with I am asking for a friend of a friend

or my cousin or my sick aunt LOL.

Immigration might even have a few people watching this site lol

It has taken FB 35 days to delete my 2 accounts.

However the one that was hacked and stolen from me is still up online 4 months later, yet FB leaves it up.
