Korat police shoot at each other in "misunderstanding" over "yaba" drugs deal

Daily News Thai Caption: Police shoot at each other

Daily News reported on a disastrous mistake in which two police forces ended up shooting at each other causing a severe injury to one officer.

Sikhio police were informed of the shooting incident at a house in Lat Bua Khao sub-district in the NE province of Nakhon Ratchasima.

They found 52 year old Pol Capt Suwisit Lawong from their own constabulary shot in his right thigh and his left arm.

He had such a serious artery rupture in the leg that he had to be transferred for surgery from the local hospital to Maharat in central Korat.

Pol Col Yongyot Phondech, Sikhio chief, said his men had arrested a drugs suspect who had pointed them in the direction of the house where the shooting occurred.

The suspect said he bought the yaba there.

Five officers went to make a further arrest but at the same time five officers from the Klong Phai force (in the same province) were on their way too under similar circumstances to conduct a sting.

There had been no communication between the two forces.

The Klong Phai officers saw the Sikhio men with their guns drawn in a banana plantation next to the house.

Orders were made by each force to "freeze" - then the firing in the dark began.

It resulted in dozens of shots being fired. Sergeant Siriwat Meesaeng was the one who shot Suwisit.

It was called a misunderstanding.

ASEAN NOW notes that RTP detractors often call the force the "Keystone Cops".

That seemed all too appropriate in this case.

  • I think you'll find that the biggest RTP detractors are the Thais themselves.   BTW nice mixed metaphor there. I'd rather have my candle and eat it.

  • One lot going after the YaBa and the dealer , the other lot trying to protect him, who knows ....but it's all a misunderstanding ... regards Worgeordie

Neeranam notes that RTP detractors is another name for Thai bashers, who move here for developing country benefits like cheap rent and living, desperate young ladies, yet moan about things like the police.

Can't burn you cake at both ends.

Strange story. Lack of communication, coordination? Or something else, looks something for The Untouchables

...Just a live exercise, of course some collateral damage can be expected.

Lessons have been learnt, and real traffickers put on notice.

"Can't burn you cake at both ends"

I think you've got your sayings a bit mixed up. It's either you can't have your cake and eat it to (which is the more appropriate saying for this scenario) OR burning the candle at both ends (which is not the appropriate saying for this scenario).

its <deleted> hilarious really ....developing the cake and burning the country and desperate moaning young ladies at both ends ....I get it

Its everywhere not just the cops.....  no comunication...  left hand dunno what right hand does... I get several calls/emails/messages/week when staff

asking/replying this or that, same ol thing.....  one of the largest real estate companyes are famous for this.. total circus...

its all the managements fault not doping their job co ordinating the companies resorces..  the owners should find better managers..

I know part of it is the asian "now mindset" of well, you received it so there is no problem..... nevermind that the company looses millions

THB

and time running around in circles...

Remember one some years back when Pattaya police tried to shoot out the tyres on a fail to stop vehicle (seriously) from opposite sides of the road at the same time ????

Send the rest of the entire force to the happening; then only there will be space for possibly something better called "police" wearing uniforms - me thinks! Keep up the good work and carry on shooting each other; a lovely Christmas gift to the Thai people

Again wow! It's burn your candle at both ends (staying awake and partying), not really the correct use or have your cake and eat is more relevant. Thailand which I love and am married to a beautiful and very good Thai wife and two wonderful children with a very good family and I think the Thai government, military and police are not fit for purpose and the comparison to the mafia is well deserved. The fact that Thailand is still a 3rd world country and not as prosperous as Japan and South Korea comes from the greed and corruption from the top down. However, Thailand has some of the riches families in the world and also poorest.

it is your cake, not you cake, the gross grammar error is not as bad as the twisted logic, another foreigner being more Thai than thou, or blind nationalist, phony to the cakes core

"Can't burn you cake at both ends"

Surely should be you can't light your candle and eat it

While this is a sad indictment on communication between departments which the usual RTP detractors have seized upon to sprout their racist diatribe, how often have Western forces, especially US members been killed by friendly fire caused by lack of communication / mistakes?
I guarantee, the figures are higher in the west.
Oh that's right, it's different isn't it, just go ahead and sprout your anti-Thai, racist diatribe.
Sickening.

Thailand is a similar society to pre-Revolution Russia or China. The rich have all the power and influence, backed up by the police and the military. The poor are downtrodden and hopeless of change.

There does not seem to be the same appetite for Revolution here, although there were hints of it during the Red/Yellow shirts conflict and the recent student demonstrations.

I am not sure if the current status will prevail, or if some groundswell of opinion or defining event will be enough to trigger overwhelming dissent. I think the Thai character is different to both the examples I quoted earlier, but I know they can get very angry.

I guess that eyeballing the potential criminals before pulling the trigger didn't enter their minds. The well oiled brown machine strikes again.
