The Thai government should look at imposing preventive measures to test or restrict travelers from China and countries where a lot of Chinese tourists have visited, the main opposition Pheu Thai Party said.

“Given the [Covid-19 outbreak] situation in China, Thailand should cautiously prepare for the influx of Chinese tourists,” said former deputy prime minister Chaturon Chaisang who is a member of Pheu Thai’s strategy committee.

“We should have some guards up…and tests should be administered to find out what kind of variants are coming in from China to find out if they are more severe than the variants that have been found in Thailand,” he said.

For once a PT stance I can agree with.  But I don't think PT announces anything without da boss sez so.

LOS did a fair job at the airports during the SARS thing, let's hope they build from that.

Covid in China: Countries tighten rules as tourism set to resume

China is opening its borders after three years - but as Covid cases surge, other countries are wary.

The US has become the latest country to impose mandatory Covid tests on visitors from China, after it announced it would reopen its borders next week.

Tighter measures have also been brought in by Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan and India.

Indeed, like banning them! Guaranteed there will be a huge surge of covid here akin to a second wave.

“On one flight, which landed at the city's Malpensa Airport on 26 December, 52% of passengers were found to be positive for Covid, la Repubblica reports.”

Same as happened before when they all few in from Wuhan with it.

Magically Thailand was virtually unaffected.

Whereas European countries, whose nationals who had just returned from holidays in Thailand, saw a rapid increase in cases.

You mean like myself, my son, and anyone else who flew internationally in 2021?

Not a necessary response to use travel restrictions , the virus is well established in Thailand and has been for a year. yes some surveillance testing is warranted but only for the purposes of checking for new variants.

Those calling for this need to think, by your same logic, hasn't Thailand been restricting arrivals from Japan, where they recorded 1M cases last week?

If they do this for China, next it'll be the US ( still lots of covid there), the UK, Japan, where next and we'll be back to 2020, there's no need to do this.

the most can be done is to introduce compulsory travel insurance.

Even just $10k, that would be ample for shortish uncomplicated hospitalisation.

Thai even can sell it on arrival.

To immediately activate this insurance they would need an ATK test at the airport or at any clinic.

That move will automatically boost medical tourism, not only for private, but also for governmental hospitals.

Win win situation, not restrictive to an average tourist or traveller

Mandatory ripoff insurance was possibly he most useless rort /scam of the pandemic.

Why not bring back "Certificate of Entry" ?

That will stop the virus this time for sure.

Got to love China's foreign ministry spokesman saying this with a straight face ...

But earlier on Wednesday, Wang Wenbin, China's foreign minister spokesman, accused Western countries and media of "hyping up" and "distorting China's Covid policy adjustments".

He said China believed all countries' Covid responses should be "science-based and proportionate", and should "not affect normal people-to-people exchange".

Mr Wang called for "joint efforts to ensure safe cross-border travel, maintain stability of global industrial supply chains and promote economic recovery and growth".

"science-based and proportionate" ... "not affect normal people-to-people exchange" ... from a country that until a month ago was blindly implementing the most draconian restrictions.

As you sow, so shall you reap.

Nothing to see here!

In reality, it is how it all started in 2020, Chinese returning to Northern Italy after being home for their New Year.

Sure, but everyone knows tests are frequently forged in China, so an additional PCR test should be administered at their destination, possibly even forced quarantine until shown all-clear. Thailand already built the infrastructure to do this, if the govt is wise, they will re-activate it ASAP.

no negative test...no entry

With recent covid cases exploding in China does thailand really want to roll the dice allowing untold numbers of chinese to show up untested just as Thailand is starting to recover from covid?  Tests are not perfect but better than nothing.  Don't wait til the horse is out of the barn to close the door.

Yes scrutinize travers from China but don't bring back those stupid temperature check machines and QR code check in and check out apps.

Huge hypocrisy for sure from China, but the USA is equally guilty here, did you see the comments in the same article from US officials around testing to "slow the spread".

Coming from a place with no Covid rules or restrictions at all where the virus has spread freely for a year?

This is all just fear and emotion over logic.

If Thailand doesn't impose mandatory COVID-19 tests on travellers from China it will be a disaster.

Covid-19 numbers will escalate substantially.
