An influential Thai virologist said new Covid-19 strains from tourists traveling from the West are more worrisome than older strains from tourists traveling from China.

 

Dr. Yong Poovorawan came out today, January 6th, to allay Thai people’s concerns over a surge in Covid-19 infections in light of China’s upcoming easing of travel restrictions from January 8th onwards.

 

Dr. Yong, who is the chief of the Centre of Excellence in Clinical Virology at Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Medicine, posted on his Facebook wall that, “The ongoing outbreak in China is primarily caused by the Omicron subvariant of Covid-19, known as BA.5, which has already spread in Thailand.”

Why do I always think about the movie dum & dumber when I see Dr. Yong ????

The DF (Dirty Farang) variant of Covid has always been the most deadly. But weirdly isn't recognized in the rest of the world.

It will be interesting to see the Thailand Covid statistics in 3 months time, and compare the number of western tourists who have been hospitalsed compared to the number of Chinese tourists.

 

Especially as that will be in the lead up to the election when the government has been set free (55555) for the election, and there is only a caretaker government.

A primary reason to consider restrictions is because China is about to become the most massive source of new variants the likes of which the world has never seen. They have a mostly unprotected 1.4B people facing one of the fastest spreading Omicron variants known, BF.7.

 

It also seems the good Dr. Yong doesn't know about BF.7 yet.

Unfortunately you seem to have not seen reports from Italian authorities that they aren't seeing new mutations as yet from China. Thailand is trying to combat the virus on two fronts. First is large numbers of infections arriving from China which will overwhelm the hospital system and second is more dangerous new mutations coming from the US and Europe. Hence, the restrictions applying to all arrivals.
