Top Thai virologist says if you’re healthy “you can ditch the face mask”

“BA.5.2 is not worrisome as Thailand has already faced it. Instead, the XBB.1.5 and BQ.1.1 subvariants from the US and Europe are concerning.”

Seems like many are not worried. One colleague wears a mask due to an allergy caused by PM2.5. Others just seem to prefer wearing a mask in the office.

  • Thanks Dr. Yong. It's high time someone spoke up with a bit of common sense on this issue.

  • Only ever wore mask at 7-11 & Makro, when you couldn't get in without one.   Mask ... IMHO ... are totally useless at stopping a virus, in most situations.

  • Wearing those masks for 3 years and washing your hands 20 times a day is actually most likely getting them a flu and cold soon, as their immune system has weakened by that specifically alone.

I have been to Issan and up North, and masks are ignored or just worn in a half-ass manner.  Everyone is tired of those face diapers.

And, they do not work anyway.

If they did, China would not have a problem, because they wear masks 24 hours a day....555555.

I've watched several street scene videos a week shot in China, and almost no-one was wearing a mask.

Top virologist who is just an MD and professor of paediatrics at Chula, I will not be taking anything he says too seriously.

If I lived in Bangkok I would be wearing 3 facemasks with all the Chinese coming in.

The Chinese are back so...

Next week: Everyone should wear a mask at all times.

The week after: Lockdown with bars closed and restaurants selling take-out only.

The week after that: All arrivals must have Covid insurance with tests at airports, with those (except Chinese) found to be positive to go into self-financed quarantine.

Yes, the usual anti mask cry babies seem not to have read the full text or gone to the link. In reality he is changing nothing.....

But hey, if people in Issarn and up North aren't bothering they must be superfluous as they are all real smart up there!

You have gone native haven't you?

You'll be calling us Buffaloes next...

12 months after most of the world dropped them, but good to hear anyway.

Up here in Issan ( Chaiyaphum area) nearly everybody is still wearing one. Even little kiddies.

Guys on tractors in the middle

of fields masked. Old women walking on the side of road alone masked.

Lucky for the wife and I no one has said a word to us about not being masked. Not Makro, 7-11, nowhere. Just the SCB bank asked which made me chuckle as half the staff had them used as chin guards.

Off to Bangkok in a couple of days and it will be interesting if things have changed since we landed on Boxing Day from Oz. Didn’t wear a mask at Suvarnabhumi or on the flight to KK.

Mask enthusiasts .  This is not a flex or boasting about non masking. Just our experience.

Isan is big and seems the message hasn't reached every corner.

Big majority wearing masks in convenience stores, supermarkets, offices etc.pp.

(all! staff of course)

Walking on the open parking lot with masks, riding motorbikes even bicycle.

The highly esteemed Mr. Anutin, health minister and his entourage incl. greeters welcomed the Chines at the airport without masks and even shaking hands (although he made a long arm ).

With this, how can they seriously demand people still wearing masks.

Some weeks ago visited my PC repair guy. Entered shop and no one wearing masks.

Asked him and he said that he just came back from Pattaya. So do I, I said and we had a good laugh.

The dreaded mask is to stop a person from spraying out virus laden spit & breath to infect others.

The Vaccine is to minimise the effect of the virus IF YOU CATCH IT. It does not prevent you catching it, or spreading it.

Quite right.

It calls into question the legitimacy of the doctor especially when he is reported to have said double vaccinated people are immune. They are not. The vaccine only lasts a limited length of time which varies depending which vaccine is administered.

Same observation here.

And nothing will change until:

The message is clearly announced during commercial break of soap operas by high authorities.

Propagated through the village headmen through the morning loudspeaker and the village health centers.

Peasants don't read about top virologists.

Bwaaaa Haaaaa Haaaaa none of their masks or jibby jabs worked anyway. Except if you’re a CNN watcher ????????????????

Its not always about yourself, its also about people knowingly having a very contagious virus and reducing the chance of spreading it to others who may be at risk while you are perhaps in the office or other enclosed spaces.

......and then bring the children and/or grandchildren to visit granny in the nursing home. Oops.

It has been accepted as just another circulating virus in the West.

That's why life has gone back to normal there.

Covid? What's Covid.

You can attempt to stop mother nature by any ridiculous means you want but big bad Covid is going to get you anyway.

Surely what's happened with the reopening of China has taught you that.

If the masks work so well then why do people wearing them have a problem if I don’t?

No  point asking sensible questions of people who cannot grasp things.

This sounds like Dr Yong Poovorawan  is a tin foil hat wearing conspiracy theorist....lol

Any one who does not want to wear a mask 24/7/365 is a conspiracy theorist....

Just joking...Yea for  Dr Yong Poovorawan....

But, but, but...      I stay with the Thai people around me in Bangkok.  Wear a mask.

Looks like he eventually took the right drugs now.

I have to laugh at people who wore/wear a mask over their mouth but not their nose.  There's a fellow at my gym who dons his mask like this and I just wonder ..... for what?  Time to free yourself of the mask mate.

Might be better if he pulled it over his nose, unless he has a Roman one.....

That happened a lot in early masking days, people with specs also complained they steamed up. If he is older he may be justified wanting to protect himself... from Covid and from flu....... I get quite a few reports of people catching Covid getting quite sick... not something to play Russian Roulette with. Gyms must be a likely place to catch nasty diseases! (Or getting hit with a dumbbell)

Second step;

Buy now N95 face mask to prevent Pollution effects in yours lungs. Smog season is just comming.????

You see masks are not all the same, some are very thin and very cheap. But the N95 mask is much thicker and better made.  Now  when I go shopping and I wear a N95 mask I got around a half hour to finish my shopping before I am gasping for air. I hope this helped.

im lost for words.

The blue masks are full of tiny holes.

they are used only to stop spit and avoid blood in the face for surgeons.

the holes are 600 microns in size.

the virus is 5 microns.

Vaccines prevent the contraction of a disease.  These clot shots have been proven not to be vaccines.  Even Pfizer admitted that natural immunity is 100 times better than the protection given by their clot shots.
