UPDATE: Thousands of Russians flee for Thailand to avoid Ukraine war call-up as they ‘take over’ top resorts

I agree. That much is blatantly obvious to me as someone who lives here and used to make a considerable effort with everyone in my development.  Other whites who aren't Russian are not to be trusted. The Thais are nothing more than a servant class. That is the way Komrade.

As someone who enjoys his privacy even when on a public beach or in a pub I think you're being harsh.

Remember, many cannot speak English very well if at all.

Who said anything about a beach or a pub?

I'm talking about my so called neighbours. In most places around the world you make an effort to build a rapport with the neighbours and exchange courtesies. Russians only seem to do this with other Russians. This raises the question why not stay in mother Russia? everyone is just like you.

You're dreaming.

Most places in the world do not make efforts to know neighbors any longer. This is very true in US and probably has been for decades in Metro areas

Thailand is very transient. You're only the neighbor as long as you've the visa to stay on.

Maybe they are feeling sheepish bc of all the cultural prejudice and know how westerners are influenced re Ukraine / Russian propaganda

Finally, maybe they simply don't speak English.

Russians by nature are not jovial people. Steeled by bad weather, bad government and hard times.

Oh that's right, can't speak imperial English, not happy enough for you (insert fake Thai smile here) - just stay home.

They don’t seem keen on anyone really. I lived in Pratumnak for awhile near the Russian market. They avoid eye contact and I could pass as Russian just from appearance.

There was something about the Russians that was very stand-offish.

True, I don’t see the ones who stay here as a happy smiling folk. They do avoid all contact , always have.  I’m often spoken to in Russian by market stall holders, I always say I’m English and speak a few words in Thai. I don’t think I look Russian at all, strange, the Thais weren’t so keen in speaking English a few years back.

Quite so, they could have at least put a few of the pretty Russian girls in the pic?

Some are indeed pretty, but what about the working girls on walking street ? Are they , and the owners, being totally ignored by immigration ? Surprises me with all the spot controls going on.

Maybe, maybe not. I can assure you that is not the way things are done in my home country. I knew a lot of my neighbours and most people do.There are many benefits to knowing your neighbours. There is nothing strange about that. Strange is living somewhere long term and slinking around like a phantom not integrating with anyone other than your own kind. Even stranger that they chose to live like this after voluntarily moving abroad where people are...you know....different. Perhaps a precarious VISA or employment situation may be a contributing factor to their insular lifestyle.

What are you even talking about Komrade? There is no such thing as Imperial English.

Russians are not keen on Asians. There is a historical, cultural and racial bias.

You say Russians are not keen on Asians? That's absurd considering that 2/3rds of Russia is IN Asia. Additionally, Asia is a vast region of many different people.

Of course, we should be talking about Thailand, and I'd venture to say that Russians would prefer the company of Thai people over Americans and Western Europeans.

Agreed. Russia is pretty much Asia especially if we consider former republics. That's why I stated numerous times EAST Asians if you look back far enough. You probably entered the conversation and saw one of my posts and I just happened to state only Asians.

Like everyone I'm making a sweeping generality but at least it's not negative bias. I know in rushing guy who's been married to a tire woman for well over a decade and has a child. The child speaks Thai Russian and English.

I think this entire form should really back off on the Russians. Ask yourself this how much control do you personally have over what your government does? How much input do you have as an expatriate here?

"Steeled by bad weather, bad government and hard times"

obviously you have not been to Russia much (I have). All three of your assumptions are wrong but I do understand the lying western media have painted Russia this way for decades. Beautiful country, hot and cold weather. Things improved hugely after the Commies and Yeltsin and life for ordinary Russians is much improved from their grand parents days. Is it perfect?  obviously not but where is?

Funny the pretense, or the blindness, that suddenly the Russians have brought all this uniqueness. Nothing new, actually, except poster hypocrisy. Germans have never gone around with a stupid sloppy smile on their faces, greeting strangers, but nobody's ever said a word about it. Who does, BTW? Germans living here long term keep company with other Germans. No, they don't socialize with their Brit neighbors, and their Brit neighbors don't socialize with them.

That isn't slinking around, just your bigoted fantasy. Brits keep company with other Brits or members of the Commonwealth. Never with Germans or, mostly, with other nationalities. As an American, I've never felt welcome among any group of Brits in a Brit pub, for example. Would a Russian? Of course not.

Do you live alone in a Thai cave.............:cowboy:

I am English, I also have a German friend. I feel a bit sorry for you, Fred....

With your attitude I am not surprised!

PS;  Yes I am a Brit!

Unwelcome before their perception of any attitude on my part. It's merely the accent, to start off with. My attitude was, believe it or not, naively favorable before I came to Thailand. Reading the forum also clarified the situation quite well.

'A' German, well done. Exceptions can of course exist. I've lived in a large condo building for decades with other co-owners of various nationalities, but mainly Brits and Germans, so I'm quite familiar with the clannishness and rivalry between the two. It's "Krauts" vs "Monkeys." Many of the Germans, often better educated, can speak English, but not all. None of the Brits can speak German or of course "posh."

Brits socializing with Germans at a German resto or Germans coming in to join a group of Brits in a faux-Brit pub--you think you're really seeing that? Nah.

So Russians--oh, SHOCK.

Indeed somebody has seemingly paid some serious money to ensure that immigration continues to ignore them?

If you think English speaking expats don’t socialise with other nationalities you are showing your own ignorance.

As I noted, exceptions may exist. Note you've ignored my major point about the Germans, which refuted your amusing sudden SHOCK about the Russians. ????

Given that they seem just like any other group of expats here I have no input to the so called, rivalries or clannish like behaviour of Germans or Brits. There isn't much press on Germans here in Thailand. Where can I go in Thailand to find whole buildings full of Insular German communities? Can I find illegal German tour guides or taxi drivers? Mafia? Sex workers? That honestly sounds interesting.

Oh, at the bars and restos of Phuket, as you said. The "press" about the Russians being rude, standoffish, etc. is actually just hot air from bigoted ANF forum posters, again mostly Brits.

Like other groups, Germans are more populous in certain areas, and I happen to live in one, so I know whereof I speak. You don't know of any such areas. And you evidently haven't been to any of the German restos in Phuket, where you may also listen for, say, Brummie or Geordie. Or, for that matter, Russian restos. So that omission rather underlines my point.

In fact, you only referenced English speakers in your post, and may have simply embellished the truth anyway about the supposed "international" groups.

Your other pretended "interests" are irrelevant to my point.

"And that Germans outnumber Brits won't happen there" - . Anyway - Anyone except these obnoxious cigarette smoking german oafs is alright with me. These german jerks in Naklua think they own the place. I charter my private songkow just to get out of Naklua without putting up with them. Of course it also has some other advantages
