The levels of carcinogenic particulate matter 2.5 micrometers (PM2.5) in Thailand’s Chiang Mai province has been deemed the worst in the world as of yesterday morning, March 29th.

The Command Center for Preventing and Resolving Forest Fire Problems, Smog and PM2.5 Fine Dust of Chiang Mai reported yesterday morning that 334 hotspots have been discovered in 25 districts across the province. The most effected areas are Chiang Dao district with 65 hotspots, Chai Prakan with 35, Mae Ai with 32, Samoeng with 30, and Fang with 27.

These districts are mostly in the northern part of Chiang Mai. The cumulative hotspots range from January 1st, 2023 to the present total of over 5,867 spots, with 2,322 hotspots found in March alone.

Something in any other country would have the governor removed. But this is Thailand and ecceptable by those above.

Street food with extra flavor!

The air in Chiang Mai is most definitely chewy not too tasty though.

Most days the warning is "hazardous"!

Not, along with Phuket, Pattaya or Samui.

this incessant burning and smog.  The Thai people are simply too docile.  As for me, plans are being made

to relocate as soon as my contract is fulfilled.

Has anyone heard of any Local, Provincial, or National Politician recently discussing possible ameliorations/solutions to this annual-problem ?  [  -  I *haven't* ]  --  This is a public-health disaster, and it seems that the people in CM are expected to sit-tight, and wait for the winds to come and blow the smoke away..

The negative consequences of this will not be realized for years.  This is because when children are exposed this horrible air their underdeveloped lungs and respiratory system cannot handle it.  Cases of asthma for young people could spike in the coming years.  Inhalers will be high demand.  Is the Ministry of Health planning for this?

The levels of carcinogenic particulate matter

Which particles are carcinogenic???? The levels of sensationalism in the media is getting worst than in the tabloid newspaper days.

Another confusion for the uninitiated is the possible confusion in Thailand that the name of the provincial capital and the province is often the same.

This is the PM10 count today in northern Thailand. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it this bad. And Dear Leader said he was going to put a stop to this….

"Previous studies have identified a marked association between particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) exposure and increased incidence of pulmonary diseases (1). ... PM2.5 comprises a mixture of solid and liquid particles, including black carbon, metals, nitrate, sulfate, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and automobile exhaust particles (4).

It has also been indicated that PM2.5 may trigger asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) and lung cancer through the activation of various signaling pathways, ... A European cohort study indicated that PM2.5 exposure increased the risk of lung cancer, particularly lung adenocarcinoma (12). .. "A new mechanism has been identified through which very small pollutant particles in the air may trigger lung cancer in people who have never smoked, paving the way to new prevention approaches and development of therapies, according to late-breaking data [to be] reported at the ESMO Congress 2022 by scientists of the Francis Crick Institute and University College London, funded by Cancer Research UK (1). The particles, which are typically found in vehicle exhaust and smoke from fossil fuels, are associated with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) risk, accounting for over 250,000 lung cancer deaths globally per year (2,3)."

Me too. Spent a few very good winters in Chiang Mai in the eighties and nineties, and even planned to retire there. Then came back twice, in the winters of 2007/2008 and 2011/2012, and got bronchitis both times. Needless to say I haven’t been back since.

Myself and several friends developed health issues from the pollution, and my doctor told me to get out ASAP!

Not necessarily ....I could imagine a lot of doctors saying get out...why not? If you can? Then why put this kind of filth thru your body ?

No, perfectly healthy, but coughing and sinus infections were the early warning.

didn’t wait for anything more serious, which by the way was coming!

im too intelligent to wait!

why would I or anyone for that matter?

wearing a mask, and spending my time indoors with air purifiers wasn’t my retirement dream!

I didn’t work hard all my life for that!

is that your retirement dream?

I feel sorry for you!

Your retirement dream is to live in the most polluted city on earth? I can imagine that people cannot just easily relocate, because of business, work or schooling, but to claim that CM is your retirement dream is rather bizarre.
