Thai Rath reported that gangs of around 20 young motorcyclists fought pitched battles at Bang Saen beach in Saensuk sub-district of Chonburi on Thailand's eastern seaboard last night.

Tourists - and they would have been mostly Thai at the resort famous for local tourism - scattered, fearing they might get caught up in the violence.

The young people were armed with lumps of wood and items of kitchenware from beachside shops.

There was no mention of a police response in the Thai Rath story.

Reporters spoke to a trader who they called Ek who said this was a frequent occurrence.

The battling youths didn't care a jot for the law and were scaring off tourists.

There was also noise pollution from the gangs revving their bikes adding to the woes of traders and tourists in the area.

Why?

In Bang Saen they celebrate Songkran on April 13, the same as the rest of Thailand,.

April 19 is a Wednesday, so for Bang Saen residents it's just a normal working day.

Only Pattaya celebrates Songkran on April 19.

The Songkran New Year Water Festival in Thailand is celebrated nationwide. The official dates of the holiday are from April 13-15, but not every province celebrates in the same way or at the same time. In parts of central and eastern Thailand ,the Wan Lai Festival is celebrated in Chonburi province between April 16-20 with different towns and districts adopting different days for ‘Wan Lai’ (which translates as ‘the day that flows’). For example, the last of the water-throwing days in Pattaya takes place on April 19, whilst in nearby Bang Saen it’s April 17.

This is where all the Thais will go when the Chinese are back en masse. Same as pre-Covid.

As a kid I remember the Mods v Rockers battles at all the major seaside resorts in England. Then we had the football hooligans knocking bits out of each other.

Yes but the police did tend to get involved
