If you know the van driver behavior in Phuket...you are not surprised someone pushed back...40k for a broken mirror? Reflect on that for a moment.

From the OP

"An Australian man was fined 10,000 baht and paid 40,000 baht for damages after a road rage incident with a minivan in Wichit, Mueang Phuket. He also faced imprisonment for two months but he received suspension of his imprisonment sentence with one year probation."

Now if the Australian had been Thai, would the fine and damages have been the same? That is the question?

The unequivocal answer is no. this kind of thing happens every day and we do not here about it? Justice in Thailand is a joke, especially in Phuket apparently if you are a foreigner?

The Thai minivan driver is laughing all the way to the bank!

Which legal system??? Does Thailand have any???

it's all for show ... it's so underhandedness and corrupt how could any thai ever take it serious,  hence shooting, or robbing or anything criminal is no problem for thais.

For those of us who live in Thailand we are used to the way a few Thais drive (  erratic  ) are aware of not falling out with them

A tourist on the other hand will  let their emotions  get a grip of them and pay the penalty as this guy did ????

If the shoe was on the other foot, the Thai would not have to pay anything, in Thailand the police are so corrupt, just because it's a farang they think we walk around with lots of cash and money is no object

Correct, although its not just the police, its the whole judicial system, up to the very top?

A Thai would NOT have been served the same fine and damages!!

This the nice things living as farang in here.
we always get blamed. Never a Thai.
all we do in here is bring money. Farang the atm machine ????????

Yes very nice the way we're treated here as a human Atm.Dual pricing, discrimination, racism&general unfairness. If we were all to pack up our bags and head off home, the Thai's would all be left crying in their Tom yam gung, wondering what on earth they'd done.

The panic amongst them when COVID set in decimating their precious and beloved ATM,sorry tourist industry, was plain to see.

Please learn to treat your geese that lay golden eggs for you with a better degree of fairness.

Not much to ask is it?

criminal conviction like that should also be immediate deportation and ban from Thailand for life

Definitely agree with your sentiment!

I fear there is too much corruption ingrained into the social fabric, police, courts, government etc.

I would have though that Covid would have given them pause, but no its back to their old tricks as you have said!

These morons just gave up free money because they cannot control their emotional state.  Deport them and black list for 5 years.

I Learnt after 7 years here the best thing to do here is ignore what hapens on the road here, too many crazies in Thailand, drive on and stay alive, with your cash in your pocket.

Yes indeed, just bow your head if some crazy drivers doing stupid, problem ignored, don't use middle finger or you probably get shot, never know who's in the car????

What's wrong with that? We don't need them.

It must be joyous being so squeaky clean. Never cutting your own grass, washing or driving your own car/motor vehicle and many, many more jobs reserved only for Thai's. Sorry but no foreigner in Thailand can survive in Thailand if a vip takes a dislike to them or is jealous (ask the Duch guy and his wife)....?....

The guy is obviously a loser but 40k for a out of place mirror is ridiculous.

500฿ - somchai messes about with screwdriver for 10 minutes.

39,500฿ - repair little Thai mans imaginary balls and fragile ego.

Oh and 10k for the chaps down at the station.

Easy to say with hindsight, but what if the cops were talkng about this going to court, with the possibility of a spell in the monkey-house?????!

40k Baht, just under £1,000, I think I would take that offer.

Really?  Any evidence to base that on for the same charges the thug faced?

Apparently he was the aggressor.

Really?

Probably yes ......  After the van driver horned on end, tailgatet their car for some distance until both stopped at a red-light. The van driver then got out of his car and approached the the guys to ever so gentlemanly make them aware of an alleged driving error on their part a while back. To give him credit, he did not carry a machete, iron rod, gun or similar weaponry to get his point across.

Nothing further.

So the lad NOT driving the car gets boned by the police/courts.

Gotta love the Thai legal system !!

You mean the guy who broke off the mirror on the other car got boned by the police/court?

Yes, that's how it works!

It's called punitive damages. ????

But all kidding aside, he might have damaged the paint on the car and the door. Repqinting a car these days is prohibitively expensive.

Still doesn't give the other guy the right to damage his car!

I wonder if it was the other way around and the assailant was a local ? I bet the minivan driver has instigated the whole incident as no way the Ozzie had reacted the way he did.

that'll leave him with 39,500 to drink with ...   he's happy   !

Er.......not quite. You forgot to deduct the police administration fee.

Thanks God.  I do wonder if the one who fled gets to just come back unimpeded by his actions now.

Firstly... Its good to see a follow up story....

And them primarily...   Double standards much, Thailand Police ????

No condoning the actions of the Aussie guy’s response... BUT.... Is this even remotely similar to the charges a Thai man would receive in similar circumstances ????

IMO - this is double standards in the extreme.

Totally agree! We know for a fact that the majority of the RTP are corrupt, how many articles do we see on AN, on that very subject! The judges/judiciary are also corrupt, not all!

We know there is double pricing from National Parks to restaurants, we know that foreigners are looked upon has having money!

If this had been a Thai guy smashing the side mirror of a foreigners car there is not a hope in hell he would have received the same fine and damages!

Definitely double standards!

As soon as I read it I thought "6 to 1, 1/2 doz to the other".
