This is what I see every time I walk by the meat department every time I go to Big C......In the good old days they had loads of customers..... But I think the pictures answer a rhetorical question. How many buyers will go for Spanish smoked pata negra ham for 9000 to 16000 Baht/kilo to be seen at TOPS in Central Beach rd.? How many will buy a small flask of "handmade" Italian olive oil for 11000 Baht? Prices doubled since they took over the business from Big C, and they are never busy, so I wonder how they can stay in business. But many imported goods at Big C are now ridiculous priced. Creamy cheese with herbs from Casino, was 110 baht before covid, now 330 baht for 125 gram. I had a friend bring me the same thing from Europe, at 70 Euro cents (25 baht) for 150 gram. Gives me an idea why BigC extra has lost a lot of it's attraction for me when in Pattaya. Cheese: they only offer super expensive brand name products. Swiss Gruyere for 3000+ which you get at half the price at Friendship. Casino cheese price hikes stunning. Up here most has vanished from the shelves. Too few millionaires here ???? Popular Post xylophone Posted July 30, 2023 Popular Post Share Posted July 30, 2023 I have noticed that the price of meat has gone up quite considerably, however as I am not a big meat eater, it really doesn't bother me, and if I do want a good steak or similar, then I will go to a restaurant! Whenever I do buy meat, it is usually something like cheek, hock or similar that is particularly good for slow cooking in the beef bourguignon I make, and that's not expensive. Very occasionally I buy some ground beef to make a chilli con carne, and because I slow cook that, it can be local Thai beef, and the end result is just the same as if using ground Aussie beef. In actual fact, I have noticed the prices of food in general here, especially in the likes of Big C and Tops have gone up quite markedly, and that's just a sign of the times. Someone mentioned cheese, and I am quite partial to Stilton, and occasionally bought it, however went off it a while back, and when I looked yesterday in Big C, the smallest almost thumb -sized slice of Stilton was 270 baht, and I would buy it if I wanted to, but am not bothered these days. I imagine it could be hard for farangs here living purely on a pension, however there are plenty of Thai options and quite delicious Thai dishes which are very cheap and easy to cook, which I occasionally do, so switching meals and tastes is a good option in Thailand. 2 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I buy my New Zealand grass fed Rib-Eye & Striploin from Lotus, usually around 149 baht for 160 grams & 180gms, cooked more on the rare side, they are excellent value, but if you overcook them, they will be very chewy. It’s too expensive for the ingredients and not worth it. I am from the USA and used to live that way. It’s different here.
