I don't think that there's many minimilists amongst us, and most people are pretty straight 4 / 4 common time beaters.

So then you gotta buy a motherboard AND a new CPU.

 

Same with a wife that dies.

You just gotta find a new GF having the same socket.

I would kind of like to get rid of thousands of books that clutter up my 3 bedroom flat, many left from a pre-computer world and not opened since then.  But everytime I toss one out I remember it a few days later and want to see it again.  Often I see it for sale on the street and at least I can buy it back for a lot less than I paid the first time.

To each his own:  I like having a fridge, some ability to cook, a TV and the basics.

 

I do get the idea to unclutter your life as i have lots of clothes that i will never fit into again so finally loaded them all up along with a lot of other "junk" that i never used and took to salvation army..overall i find a pretty good rule of thumb is if you have not worn or used it in the last year or two get rid of it.  
I also have found that the bigger your house/condo the more junk piles up.  It's like some kind of law of nature.

I love the concept of being minimalist but when it comes to it I won't throw my memories away much of which are tied up in ornaments etc and nor will my other half let me.

 

My son is minimalist and when I visit him in the UK I envy and admire how he does it.

 

Anyway, I have a big house for the two of us, so the clutter can stay.

Minimalism is not the same as renouncing the comforts of a modern life. 

I consider myself to be a minimalist (and have read many books on decluttering) but I also enjoy TV and A/C.

Watched the Netflix documentary " The Minimalists " during COVID and it struck a real chord with me. It's not about sacrificing ownership of things that make you happy, it's more about avoiding falling into the trap of overly consumerist influence and wasting time, effort and financial resource acquiring surplus "stuff" that you can in reality live without. For me the concept has actually provided a bit of focus and contributed an improvement in an aspect of my living.

Yes.  And, it is easy here if you rent the room comes with everything mine even has a 60"  TV.

I never understood people who come here to start a new life and them accumulate things just like their old life.  Get a house, wife, cars, motorbikes and fill the house up with meaningless junk, garage area stacked cannot even park a car.

Seems really dumb just adds a bunch of stress.

Yeah, I think I am a minimalist. I always say: 'When in doubt throw it out'.

 

When I retired, and moved to Thailand, my possessions totalled one suitcase weighing 18 kg (mostly books). I've recently got a Kindle so I don't need the books.

 

When I next move I'll sell or give everything away, and start anew.

 

I guess I believe in moving through phases in life. Once you move to the next phase, you start anew on a new adventure, and don't need all the old baggage associated with the previous phase.

Not sure how you define "good stuff" or why someone would need a container to haul their stuff across the planet.

How much did the container cost? Isn't it cheaper to sell your big screen TV and then buy a new one in Thailand?

The only definition of "good stuff" I can think of is if maybe you're a professional musician and you've acquired expensive equipment, sound studio ... or sth like that. 

Otherwise, most stuff seems replaceable to me. 

And books too maybe ... but a container for books?

I don’t know. When a close family member passed away, plug-and-play replacement might not be the immediate concern.

It seems important to you so let me answer: I once wrote that my gf is watching sometimes stupid things on her tablet. And sometimes I see that. Yes, that is a fact.

 

Also, the fact that I don't have a TV doesn't mean I don't own any computer which allows me to watch videos. In fact, I own several PCs, tablets, notebooks, smart phones. I work with computers. 

And I watch videos to learn something and get entertained.
