A deputy House speaker, a Move Forward party MP, has landed in hot water over his online post showing him with a new craft beer, brewed in his hometown.

 

Activist Srisuwan Janya filed a complaint on Tuesday with House speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha, who is also chairman of the House ethics committee, seeking an investigation into Padipat Suntiphada, an MP from Phitsanuloke.

 

Srisuwan claims that, by posting an image of the craft beer can, Padipat clearly violated section 32 of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act, which prohibits the advertising of alcoholic beverages, as well as section 59 of the penal code.

 

The offence carries a fine of not more than Bt50,000 and/or a jail term of not more than one year on conviction.

 

In the next few days, Srisuwan said he will file a similar complaint with the National Anti-Corruption Commission and the Alcoholic Beverage Control Committee.

Thailand’s Deputy House Speaker Accused of Illegally Promoting Beer on Social Media

Thailand has some of the strictest alcohol laws in the world, and one of them is a prohibition on advertising any alcoholic beverage. This law carries a fine of up to 500,000 baht and a possible one year in imprisonment.

Now, Deputy House Speaker of the Thai Parliament Padipat Suntiphada from the Move Forward Party may be in trouble for violating this law after he shared a photo of himself holding a can of what he said was a craft beer from his home province Phitsanulok, north of Thailand.

 

In his Facebook post, Padipat wrote: “Here we go! Phitsanulok now officially has its first craft beer. It’s a unique and high-quality product, which represents our province apart from sun-dried bananas and fried noodles.”

 

The post has since been deleted, but it has not escaped criticism from the public, politicians, and petitioners. Some people are calling for Padipat to resign from his position, arguing that he should adhere to the law and be an exemplary figure for the public, given his esteemed political position.

 

Rames Ratanachaweng, spokesman for the Democrat Party, has rebuked Padipat, calling for him to step down and be investigated for allegedly violating the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act.

Drugs and other criminal activities are accepted in the parliament as we have seen in the past years, but beer ... o dear.... It is a crime . because of outdated laws and monopoly of the branch

Do Thai's have an alcoholic gene in their DNA?  Nothing seems to alter their alcoholic tendencies. Making inconvenient laws for everybody doesn't seem to help any with the problem.

The reality is that every bottle/can of beer, soda, water sold to the public typically contains in effect an ad through its label.

So if simple display by a consumer of such label in public constitutes commercial promotion, then a responsible government must demand such labels to be unreadable as with cigarettes sold in Thailand.

Of course, if the DHS is PAID to display such labels in public (ie., on social media), then that should be a political conflict of interest.

No surprise, given that he was spending many hours every week on organizing the show, shopping for ingrdients, filming the show etc., when he should have been doing PM work.

 

And to top it off, his dishes were basic Thai fare, nothing innovate or special.

But but but they promote water, and no-one would ever associate their name with that evil beer stuff. I remember several years ago some ridiculous tv ads of people dancing in the street and being ecstatic over their bottle of Singha or Chang water. Absolutely pathetic.

He didn't only show the beer but spoke proudly of it too, which makes that a promotion. But the charges are still ridiculous, although he gave the dinosaurs an opening to kick up a fuss. Similar to Pita not declaring his worthless shares. Give the dinosaurs an inch and they'll take a mile.

Promoting the imbibing of the demon drink!!! Off with his head!!!

The problem here is that there are laws which can be applied against anyone doing anything at anytime. And the laws are misused and abused.

 

There are thousands of local craft beer reviews here on FB DAILY. But very few charges are brought. Thousands of tourists share photos while enjoying local beers. 

 

The daily silliness here can soon become a national joke.

Where have you see an advert for beer in Thailand? 
 

This is why Singha (and Chang?) produce water, it’s why they sponsor football teams, it’s why you get dolly girls with shirt dresses pouring beer - they don’t promote beer, they promote the brand.

 

I already saw a Singaporean TV news broadcast of some MF MP who has a craft beer pub, opening admitting he was an MP because he wants the brewing laws changed as he has a vested interest.
 

Yes, this country is full of hypocrisy when it comes to alcohol laws. The MP should have thought a couple of seconds before he posted the selfie.
