Pheu Thai party’s prime ministerial candidate Srettha Thavisin said today (Monday) that he has had to renege on promises he made during the election campaign, namely that his party would not partner with either Palang Pracharath or United Thai Nation.

 

He said that he made the pledge on the expectation that the Pheu Thai party would win a landslide victory, but it didn’t and the political mathematics have changed as a result.

 

He tried to explain that he had not lied to the people, saying that the party had worked in opposition for the past nine years and the people’s standard of living dropped, “so, it is necessary to forget what we said”.

What's a pledge worth if you don't follow through because un-communicated unrelated assumptions did not pan out? It means any future pledges are worth nothing. Trust is gone.

Aha. Interesting bit of logic. I can already see this becoming a meme excuse. "I didn't lie, I just had to forget what I said".

 

No you didn't have to. You wanted to. You broke your pledge in order to get into power. You sold your supporters trust in return for personal gain. Corruption is what it is.

Can't see it. If he does the dirty on this agreement with Pheu Thai, the numbers won't add up for him with the MPs, even if all the senators vote for him. With Ruam Thai Sang Chat and if they managed to persuade the Democrats to join them, they'd still be short. And probably need Bhumjaithai and Anutin to back out of this deal and go back on their word that they wouldn't be part of a minority government. Not impossible though I suppose. 
It sounds like Prawit's brother and Thammanat are getting two of the plum ministerial positions. So unless there's another big twist I think it'll be a Pheu Thai PM. Anyone for a late bet on Paetongtarn being proposed though? That would be the way to get around senators indicating they wouldn't vote for Srettha. I'm sure they'll do as they're told though.

I doubt very, very much the treachery will be forgotten or forgiven. "You make your bed" as they say and PT's bed is now full of their sworn enemies.

PT and the rest of their group should be put up against the nearest wall, asap, the whole lot are a waste of space. If any of the "Uncles" get back into power it will be a travesty of justice for all the people who voted for change.

He could easily step down and refuse to be nominated.
