My forecast:  The next generation of expats will be even fatter.  And more American men will become passport bro's.

Passport Bro-dom is a huge topic in the Manosphere.

Prediction: 99% of those dreamers will never get on a plane.

And if they do, it will be PI, not Thailand.

What if I can get posters in good standing here (like that even exists) to verify my irrepressible American-ness? What then?

Who would willingly pretend to be an American in a place where most of the other white people pretty much view Americans as a joke?

It could mean you have been away a long time. One tends to start talking like the locals over time, because it’s easier to just say what they understand “American-ikuh” whatever, then speak like you should.

I have done it, “where you frommm? America. got it, yep bye. Easier then explaining to them where the USA is, right?

The “San Fran” thing set me over the edge though. Maybe “Frisco” is passable, but really outdated. Then you bring up Greenwich Village in Manhattan. Yeah, right. Did it have to be there? Did you visit the “Statue Of Liberty” ????. Did you “eat pizza” in New York? ????

No self-respecting New Yorker has ever been to The Statue of Liberty.

And "where'd you eat pizza?" is my go-to convo gambit for anyone who's been to Manhattan.

To the green man above, I retired to Mexico City first. They may share a continent with us, but no double-way do they ever want to be considered as American. Them's fighting words.

Frankly speaking nobody really gives a  s..... about America any more. With that in mind....a bit of humility never hurts !

I wish that was true, but unfortunately Aussies and brits love to gossip about the US. Just look at this forum, there's just too many topics about the US, or if I turn on Aussie tv, what happens in the US is a large portion of the newscast. I just wish everyone would mind their own business.

I’m from the US, the USA or the United States, not America. We don’t call it America in the USA. That could be Canada, or even South America.

Start naming things correctly so people talk correctly and it does not sound strange to an American like your talking from a textbook or a history book.

Out of curiosity where are you from in the US? You talk kind of strange.

Your right about the younger generation. SE Asia and Thailand is old school now. I think it always kind of was. For younger expats I thought it was mostly backpackers and gap year’s. People that wanted to do Thailand, maybe Vietnam, get a little grungy, then fly home and finish that Ivy League degree.

Why do Americans or (USians) always think people should speak hope they can understand. How arrogant can you be.

Many in the USA go to Mexico because it is close. There are numerous daily flights with cheap airfare as well as package deals. More from the USA can speak or understand the Spanish language as it was widely offered in schools as an alternate class. Not sure these days but a US citizen didn't need a passport to visit Mexico.

Agree, and why that, Mexico was the country I visited most for holiday.  Though only 4 times, with Bahamas, a close 2nd, and 3X, 3 different islands, 3 different reasons.   As can't see the point of revisiting the same destination all the time.

Unless really bored where you are, which is hard to be in the USA.  Easy to get bored here, damn small A$$ country ????

Can't see the point of repeat holidays to TH, but that's me.  Prefer to see something different on holiday, when living in USA.  Country/culture or natural environment, beach/mountain/snow, mix it up.

Many talk of generations, Boomers, Gen-Z etc,,,,

… but really, outside of a family there aren’t any & with regards to travel & tourism in Thailand it’s just a constantly evolving flow of a constantly evolving demographic.

Mexico to the younger people I met there was more than just close and cheap. It's fetishized the way we did Thailand and my parents did The Mediteranean.

It's the whole Parrot Head/Jimmy Buffet dream re-interpreted. And people love it as a brand: Frieda, tequila tastings, Shamans, mushroom.s

Its more likely young guys in India and China who romanticize Thailand now.

I would be in Puerto Vallarta right now if I could afford a decent place there. The beaches are great and clean! Warm water. The local guys are annoying but nothing is perfect ????????‍♂️. Some great suites overlooking the ocean. Real stuff, not Jomtein or Wongamat crap.

Its just under Us pricing though, not cheap. The beer is great, Corona, Modelo, Tecate with lime.

So the answer to your question is…drumroll…money!

Impossible to forecast 20 years ahead. Tell me how many Communist 5-year plans actually worked as intended.

I don't know about America. Given what is happening in Australia, IMO it's quite possible the influx from there will increase.

I am currently in Australia, and I am heartily sick of the sight of fat bums on women.

Absolutely right!!

There is a geopolitical realignment from a unipolar world lead by America to a multipolar world including China and others, that will affect conditions and  perceptions. How it will all play out in twenty years is impossible to tell. It all depends on  if it is going to be a cooperative existence or an adversarial one.

I am not holding my breath on a cooperative one.

So it all depends on which sphere of influence Thailand fals, or is somehow it manages to stay independent and non aligned.

If the number of Western expats falls ( in particular from Europe - the continent not the political construct) it will probably be because of the demise of the various state and company pension schemes from which many of our generation benefit.

One scenario - probability unknown - is Russia becoming a vassal of China. Siberia must be looking awfully tempting to the Chinese , after seeing how ineptly the Russian army is performing in Ukraine.

There's certainly more Russians in Thailand than ever before, they may be a significant component of the next expat generation.

Most just hop across the border.  Went to Tijuana once, then other visits were Mexico City & Yucatan Peninsula, 30+ yrs ago.  Only 1 tourist bar on Cozumel at the time, and no cruise ship docks.

I think the trend is Thailand getting relatively wealthier, more south Asians Chinese and Russians, but it will remain cheaper than Australia and they’ll always be regions of Thailand that will be affordable.
Surprised on this trip how cheap accommodation, food, etc is right now.

Maybe more people like me, outsiders looking in, who spent covid etc watching Thai videos, reading this, coming up to retirement and finally gonna do it.

Which question was that? Title is “Next Generation Of Expats”, rather than calling for yet another expression of how far you’ve failed to reach any of your goals in life.

Your problem appears to be a taste for Champagne, on a beer budget.

Only dreaming, but not actually living…

How about a positive post at least once in a while?

Is everything crap in your life?

Parrot heads of the Carribean, move to Cancun.

Gen X prefer Mexico?!  Ones, location has a lot to do with what one sees though. From what I see here, we are already in an ‘US expat wave’.  A lot of X’ers, but all through the age spectrum, including young millennial bots. They use other social media, easy to miss just how many there are. I can't say I'm overjoyed about it. When my idiot step brother turns up here, I'll know it is time to move on.

The much talked about 'Chinese wave', post Wuhan flu, never materialized, much to the shock/dismay of the local real estate industry, boohoo.

It’s not the money. Even if you were in PV right now, you’d find another reason for your unhappiness. Are you sure that you are not a girl?

In my Thai language class, it's 50% S.Asian, Other Asian, Middle East.

Are we but wooly mammoths before the fall into the tarpit?

What does the demographic look like living here in 20 years?

Follow the money. The wooly mammoth west is getting poorer and poorer every year. Asia wants this to be their century, and so far it is, except for Russia their prospects seem bleak. But Russian's pride on being strong and resilient so I won't quite count them out.

In 10 years there will be A LOT LESS westerners here. In 15 years there will only be legitimately rich westerners here.

San Franciscans don't say Frisco!

In Thailand to communicate, you say America.

In Latin America, best to be polite and not say that.

In Europe, say U.S.

In the U.S., no need to say, people know.

Mex, Tulum etc. have the youth vibe and the dreads. Really, it's all about who gets the dreads or the gays.

The young are gaga in love with Mex at The Beach-era inThailand levels. A lot of it is down to where the nomadic EDM dance people decide they want to be. At the full moon party, a lot of those people said Tulum was better.

Mex City attracts more intellectually oriented expats. When I lived in Zona Roma, I had my pick of little stores selling Sun Ra tee shirts. Real bookstores with real books. Tryyyy that in a small town.

Maybe 1% of tourists become expats. (to use your own number for passport bro's)

Tourists aren't committing anything beyond a week or 3, before sleeping back in their own bed in their own country.  That's a very different decision from picking up your entire life and moving it to a different country.

Posted

Aren't you a former tourist who got smitten? I am, that's all I meet here.

Same in Mex. Once a low down place becomes your mono-destination, you're a candidate for a cheap apartment with weak water pressure there.

Air conditioned apartments in Mex City -hard to find.
