I hope Thailand will buy lots more of these subs and also pay over the odds for them. Then maybe the Thai economy and the Thai baht will devalue. My UK pension will then increase in value and buy more baht.

You have to laugh at their audacity though!  Willing to get into bed with nearly every nation the west despises but then expects the west to supply them with their best tech?  Do they think that just because it is Germany instead of the US they will get any different outcome to that of the F-35A's?

Agreed.As a former submariner I think the Gulf is too shallow for this sub to operate stealthily. Average depth of 190 ft. and the boat is 250 ft operating depth of 980 ft. Doesn't make sense. Like you say Coast Guard type vessels would be much more useful.

As Thailand's seas are apparently too shallow to deploy submarines in the first place, isn't all this just a charade to gift China these machines to reverse-engineer.?

Was talking to an old Royal Navy friend many years ago about the Thai submarine saga (debacle????).

 

1. The South China Sea isn't deep enough for sub operations.
2. Thailand doesn't really have any external threats.

True, but buying a submarine without a proper engine would also be a loss of face and point to the corruption involved in the purchase.

 

In my opinion there more worried about the discovery of corruption and lost handouts than loss of face. 

The new boys on the block would earn incredible credit if they would tell the Chinese suppliers to forget the deal as they sold the Thai crooks in the past incomplete equipment. 

In all fairness, Thailand having subs is the naval joke of the 21st century. Since China cannot fulfill, the contract is broken - wondering how the exit clause reads in that pile of paperwork.

Also pretty clear is, that the present German government will have to stand to its position of "human rights", "copyright infringement" and whatever other slogan they use to denunciate China. Germany's foreign minister's visit to China went very "unwell", to say the least, and her absolute ignorance for diplomacy and non-adherence to diplomatic protocol towards her Chinese counterpart resulted in the latter walking off the stage and the Chinese big banana also had no time to receive her - all of a sudden. 

It is Thailand's chance to get rid of this absolute waste of taxpayers money while putting the shaky club of parliament onto slightly more solid pedestal of honest leadership - provided this is on the cards in the first place ????

There should be plenty of old 450 Merc engines laying around that no one wants 100 for the price of one.  ????

2baht's idea to use it for Children's Day seems a better plan given this section of the story.
