Pattaya — A 3-year-old and 12-year-old child were killed in a motorbike-pickup truck collision today near Pattaya. Three more people were injured, all under 18 years old.

The devastating accident was reported to Huay Yai Police at 11:30 AM on Sunday, September 17th, on Plang Road 9, Khao Mai Kaeo sub-district. Banglamung district, Chonburi province. The police, The Pattaya News, and emergency responders rushed to the scene to aid several injured individuals.

At the scene, many villagers were found gathered to help the victims, all of whom were minors under the age of 18. Upon examination, it was found that a 12-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl had suffered serious injuries and passed away shortly after the authorities’ arrival.

The deceased, whose names were withheld due to their young ages, were reportedly run over by a pickup truck, after a motorbike they were riding driven by other minors collided with their peers who were driving alongside them.

Their parents had traveled to see their beloved daughter and son, and upon learning of their losses, they collapsed and burst into tears.

What can one say... 'go out and play on the bikes on the highway' was obviously not it.

Very sad.

How many (Thai) parents will learn from this? How many will decide not to let their 12 year old kids ride a motorcycle?

How many will think about the risks for their babies?

I heard of too many accidents, sometime deadly, from the Thai family and their friends. I don't remember anybody even mentioning that maybe it is not a good idea that children take that risk.

They don't even think that maybe the outcome could have been better with helmets.

It seems it's more like: This is karma, let's buy one more amulet. TiT.

Went to pick the daughter up from her school on Friday afternoon. The gates opened, and the bikes came roaring out. The first twenty m/cs saw only two riders wearing crash hats.

It has to start at the schools. They, and the casual parents' attitudes, need to change. The first thing to do is stop any bike leaving unless rider and passenger have a hat on. Inconvenience the parents. First step.

As for age! Seen kids as young as 9/10 riding helmetless on the 2022 (Ban Dung to Phen road). .

Also need to address behavior on the roads.

Everything, every action in this country reflects its culture.

And the culture will not change.

Police get orders not to intervene with school children, in whichever means they use to get to school.

Parents will still accept the dangerous actions of their children.

And some of these parents will end up crying.

And the culture will carry on....

A big danger also, at least around these parts, is holes in major roads. The 2022 from Ban Dung to Sum Sao, a distance of 35km, is disgraceful.

Very much so.

The pot holes get the young guys at night time.

very dangerous, also day time kids are just not paying attention to them.

I wanted my child to live, and live without brain damage so I banned all scooter use when transporting for school through part of the city. I made it clear that I would pay for any transport to and from school but family ignored that when it took more than 5 minutes to hail a taxi or call Grab.

Three times it took me reading the riot act at them, spittle flying in their faces.  It is the only time I've lost it and called them dumb <deleted> hicks, what the <deleted> is wrong with you all. Your fat somtam stuffing faces will probably bounce and survive, a 5 year old will be a smear on the road and gone forever.

- they just don't care, thought I was being hysterical.

- it finally stopped when the monkey started ratting them out and telling me "I went on a bike ride today".

Well that and me physically putting them in a taxi every morning.

disclaimer: I love my extended family and they're not bad people..  just sometimes stubbornly stupid with little to no thought given to consequences.

the tragedy is this cultures ignorance and inability to accept change.

It's a sad fact....if you want something doing a particular way here you need to do it yourself or spend 100% of the time overseeing it. They appear to revel in deception or simple rule  breaking .. or simply don't even think about it.

Their neighbors will be doing the exact same thing tomorrow.

Seems like the kids were staying with grandparents?

Of course you are correct.

However, reality rears it ugly head.

Many areas, especially rural ones, have no other means of transport. Or no money to pay for it.

eg Parents working. Grandparents live a distance away and too old to ride a bike. No one can afford a car.

Catch 22.

Unnecessary and sad, yes. "Tragic" to me is an overused word that appears in almost every headline in relation to accidents like this.  In a way I've become dulled to these types of reports. When I first got here years ago I had a lot of empathy. Now.....after reading about incidents like this on almost a daily basis (never mind he ones that don't make the news) it provokes more of a judgemental "facepalm" reaction than anything else.

Not proud of it but it just is what it is.  I just focus on doing my best to prevent myself and/or my family from becoming victims of the local road lunacy.

PS. In reference to the PN article, kids are allowed to ride m/c from age 15 - does that mean they can/must also (technically speaking) have a license at 15?

Regretting allowing them to drive motorbikes without helmets; regretting there are no police enforcing road safety rules.

And driving unlicensed M/C with no number plate.

If they lived with grandparents, the grandparents would allow them to ride motorbikes, someone must have given them the keys?

Well, I wonder how people in other poor countries cope? You simply cannot discipline Thais. They will always do what they want, regardless of the dangers. But they don't care, so I don't care. Their country. Their culture. They roll the dice, play Russian Roulette with their kids life. Up to them.

As a company owner, manager, and former step-father, this is true.

Wasn't, just my take on the situation, kids are grandparent raised all over Thailand, also it said parents were visiting the kids, so IMHO was a fair assumption,  but not everyone's.
