$5000/month in the US and most of the West is barely a middle-class existence any longer.

That amount of money in almost any other third-world/developing country makes you pretty well off.

I have a suggestion.  You need a 70K THB / month residence like you need a hole in the head. You can find very nice accommodations for under 20K (much less actually).  Instead of p*ssing your money away here in Thailand on over-priced rentals and bling (or whatever third-world country you decide to reside in), find a modest residence and then save and invest your savings.  Becoming an expat gives you financial opportunity most people can no longer afford in their Western "home countries."  

So look to this as an opportunity.  You can live a good life here and still be able to save and invest as least 1/2 of your monthly income if not more.  Then like bob smith stated elsewhere (to paraphrase), "When the economy tanks, the New Wealthy Class will be those sitting on cash and liquid investments and buying as everyone else is selling."

With that kind of money I would be hopping from plane to plane for a year or three.

If a place strikes my fancy I would settle..for a time..or for good.

Jealous?  No.  I find it fascinating to watch how people p*ss their hard-earned money away as opposed to making it work for them.
There is a huge difference between needs and wants.  People who understand the difference can live very fulfilling lives.  But in my experience those who cannot differentiate between a true "need" and their endless "wants" tend to end up brash, cynical, and at the end, bankrupted.  But!  He who has the most toys and power when they die - WINS!!!

Some of us live very good lives here. Some of us have been fortunate enough to find an outstanding woman, who is delightful to be around, on a daily basis, always has our back, and is fun, smart, and lovely. For me, that likelihood of finding that back in the US, would be very low. So, that is a big factor for me. The second factor is just the quality of life. Sure, I miss alot of the culture back home. The theatre, independent film (which I can download here with no issues at all, and a super fast 1 gbps fiber optic connection, at under 700 baht per month!), stand up comedy, live jazz, etc. But I have a lovely home that I rent, for about 10% of what I would pay in California, I live very well on an income which is not huge, have access to great health care, at a tiny fraction of what it costs in the US, and do not have to put up with alot of the aggravation that I had to when I lived back there.

It is a very personal choice. I have friends who seem to be dropping like flies. I could be dead next year. You just don't know. I am not extravagant, but I live very, very well. A nice house, a new car every few years, new motorbikes for my gal and I every few years, a great art collection, plenty of good wine in the wine cooler, a new 77" OLED TV, a world class home theatre, plenty of international travel, eating in good restaurants whenever we want, etc. For me, it is a great lifestyle, that I could only dream of in the US.

 

Well worth the expense and very easy to justify. Life is way too short.

I'm not sure i could have properly taken advantage of a pro everyday even when I was 20.    Not sure I would be satisfied with a gal with those distant looks on their faces you see on pornhub. 

But if you alter your rent 50k all in. 

And exercise every other night  50k

That leaves you with 8o+k for food and drink. 

 But ..  some guys find a nice live in gal and survive on 50- 60k. So even if you say 85k then that leaves 100k for a Mia noi.   Wife tells me they are not cheap. 

Main thing is you wont be able to hang with your rich buddies unless they are generous.
