CHONBURI, Dec 1, (TNA) – As a foreigner stumbled on a sidewalk in Pattaya, a wire rope attached to a power pole pierced through his hand.

A rescue team rushed to the scene to aid Mr. Philippe Leoncuan Damme, a 61-year-old Belgian tourist, who was injured after the wire rope pierced through his left wrist and penetrated his palm for nearly 10 centimeters.

Rescuers used a cutting tool to free the victim before transporting him to the hospital.

I really hope he has the relevant insurance in place!

At least it seems from the linked article that the strands have been tidied so no further risk to humans or Belgian tourists.

After the incident, the reporter inspected the scene Friday afternoon and found that the wire rope slings earlier seen with separate sharp strands have been tied together into smooth lines, posing no danger to pedestrians.

A journalist and a health and safety professional as well. :burp:

Any exposed end of wire rope or cable is a safety concern.

So who is going to take responsibility for this incident? Nobody as usual I suppose.

I bet that bloody hurt.

Tourists are likely unprepared for the challenge of Third World sidewalks. I first encountered it in Mexico.

Expats have less excuse. Avoiding falls is in general esp important for seniors. To battle with Pattaya's sidewalks, you need to have good balance, for one thing. That means exercise and keeping your weight down. Obviously, you need to look where you're going. One old Brit didn't recently and stumbled and fell over a road stud.

And you don't go "native," as one poster recently put it, in shower shoes. Go armored. I regard sandals, so beloved, as insufficient. Better: trainers. Me, I wear light trekking shoes. They grip superbly and fend off all the usual sidewalk attacks.

Pattaya — A 61-year-old Belgian tourist was pierced through his palm by a sharp metal wire attached to a guy anchor/hook.

The incident occurred in the late evening of November 29th near the traffic light box at the intersection of Grand Condo Thepprasit, Nongprue sub-district, Banglamung district, Chonburi province.

The foreigner, later identified as Mr. Philippe Leoncuan Damme, a 61-year-old Belgian national, had been pierced through his left palm by a loose metal wire that had been used to tie around a guy wire attached to a high-voltage electrical pole.

Mr. Philippe’s palm was impaled by the pointed end of the 10-cm-long wire and sustained moderate injury. Local media reported that he was rescued by Sawang Boriboon rescue teams who subsequently transported him to Pattaya Bangkok Hospital for treatment.

How about the guy that stumbled taking responsibility... In Thailand and all over the world there are "safety concerns" that one should be aware of... it's your responsibility to see that you are aware.  Mommy cannot protect you your whole life...

The outstretched hand was a better result than the face hitting it.

Been there done that... as well as pavements just as bad in other parts of the world... had a few falls myself... my fault... my responsibility... the world is full of perils... quit being a victim.

We get older and less alert and sprightly.... sad to blame all incidents on the victim. Pattaya pavements are abysmal, and keeping an eye on them means you haven't got one on the traffic, nor on the jagged edges of a steel cable jutting out at eye level!

It's the same all over the world... perils exist... be aware... your behavior is your responsibility.

You’d be surprised. It might not be an astronomical amount, but compensation is likely.

Steel rope should be hot cut with oxy/acetylene so the ends are welded together, or at least taped tightly 'Before' cutting with a grinder. sorry sometimes I forget where I am, and how poorly staff are trained if at all.
