This next smoke season is said to be running March to June due to El Niño -so a little worse than last year. A place I love is def less lovable if I have to rearrange my life 25% of the time. We've re-signed for another year (no rent raise). If Smoke Season '25 looks dire, we're gone. In which case, The Dark Side of Pattaya starts to make sense (not into the beach partic) for having the mix of whitie pleasures and services; not to mention other whities. Close to Bangkok one way, lots of lovely towns like Chantaburi the other way. Nonthaburi BKK is another option. I'm going to look in on Phuket this year for the first time since '99. Unless you have a GF who's putting out sex, going to No Whitie-Land is self-flagellation (and not the good kind). Reports here say that that the ardor cools substantially around month 5 in Roi Et. I think you'd like living on the Darkside in Pattaya. My spouse and I have been in Pattaya about 13 years, with the last 2 moving from various beach areas to the Darkside. Lots of nice housing estates to choose from, with more being built every day. We are near Lake Mabprachan, a popular, growing area, and it's a very easy drive into town on the Motorway. We can be at places like Terminal 21, Index, Bangkok Pattaya Hospital, etc. in 15 minutes. And, as you say, Bangkok less than 2 hours away. 1 2

Walking Street is just a tiny part of Pattaya, which is now a big, spread-out city, with many other areas, which, it is clear, you have never visited. 1

I think Pattaya gets a bad rap regarding how clean the beach is. I certainly never saw the beach looking like any of the posted photos. I used to live at Northshore and every morning I could see them out cleaning the beach. I imagine they are still doing it.

Think of it the other way round i.e. you have many of the nice things of Bangkok but less hectic, hopefully a fair bit less pollution, and by the seaside. I lived near a beach in Melbourne - in St Kilda - for many years and rarely swam. But nice to have the open space. 1
GypsyT Posted December 3, 2023 Posted December 3, 2023 Not nice..... and no benches to sit. Bare concrete. No big shade trees. May have plenty of mosquitoes to study? https://www.khaosodenglish.com/life/2022/01/06/a-review-of-bangkoks-new-wetland-park/

GypsyT Posted December 3, 2023 Posted December 3, 2023 Pattaya and Jomtien beaches are very clean and well taken care off. In Jomtien good wide walk ways too. The best place for walking safely. Lake Mabprachan has nice 11km loop around it and many muscle parks along the way. Try it! You may want to move there. I did. 1 1

This year, for example, my spouse and I have been building a new house--which has kept us busy since February. I certainly use Pattaya's malls, probably once or twice a week, and I'm happy we have several very nice ones that are easy to get to from my home on the Darkside. I use them to do my banking and other services, use them for a lot of my shopping--everything from shoes, to clothes, to sports things, to electronics, to sometimes groceries, etc. I go to the mall to see a movie and sometimes eat at one of the restaurants. Did pretty much the same at the malls in the US when I lived there. Normal life 2

Not been to Wongamat in about 12 years, that's when I moved to Chiang Rai. Water can look perfectly clean and still be poor quality. Pattaya used to discharge sewage into the sea (raw sometimes), perhaps that has changed? I can't say.
