But seriously, I too, have never been to Isaan, and would prefer to stay in a place with some nightlife, beautiful women.  Anybody with experience, please do comment.

It's everywhere, just look for the bright lights or the fairy lights,  Khonkaen has a good supply of hairy pie and would be a good place to start, especially for those less familiar with the north east.   You shouldn't go far wrong in Buriram or  Surin either.  I have had many memorable times in Loei too.   Speaking a bit of Thai and knowing how to behave is always an advantage, things can get a bit lively out in the sticks, and you may find yourself the the only person with a white face in some of the places , even in the less remote  areas.   Go for it and let us know how you got on 

Years ago I visited Sisaket to stay with a friend who lived there. He spoke passable Thai.

We went to several bars in what he called the "local twinkle town" and, because he was known and spoke Thai we were welcomed, cautiously.

I got the impression that had I gone alone I wouldn't have been received so well which my friend later confirmed.

 

Bear in mind, it's nothing like BKK, Patts or Phuket!  Also be very careful as many of the ladies present were, I'm sure, very young - uncomfortably so, for me!

 

Oddly enough, when visiting Pichai some years later, another friend, who lived there, pointed out the "local twinkle town" to me although we didn't indulge.

There aren't establishments aimed at farangs here in Isaan. So you would have to drink at regular thai places. Only exception I'm thinking of is Udon Thani that has 1 street full of bars and bar complexes similar to Pattaya.

Most of them in pattaya may well be from issan, same could be said for Bangkok, Hua hin, Ban Chang Phuket and all the other islands, Further afield they are active in Korea ,Japan, Dubai in fact just about everywhere,  Probably Issans greatest export,  However there's  plenty more where they came from.  No need for anybody to worry about that

I'd forgotten about Udon, years since I've been there, not a bad hunting ground, but due to the high number of expats there it lacked the authentic Issan feel in my opinion 

I went to a soapie in Udon in 1988 and the place is still there. 

 

So def go there.

I disagree, many of the larger cities have a few bars owned by westerners ( or their wives to be more accurate)

the concentration in pattaya will even bob's chances of finding what he wants though. he can even tell them the one time at band camp when the old guy fell asleep story...
