Break the law and have an accident, that negates your fully comp insurance, leaving you to face a very large compensation claim is not really a good idea. Good luck to G Rex, he's gonna need it. And anyone else that does similar.

What many others do and get away with would be irrelevant to me - I certainly wouldn't want to be accountable for people riding in flat bed of a vehicle I am driving....    

... I have a 100% seatbelt rule in my car... Which of course, I've broken a couple of times when we cram 5 or 7 people into our car when going to a restaurant etc... 

 

But... In Bangkok, is there really any need for people to be riding in the flatbed of a pickup when there are so many taxi's and the sky-train.

 

 

 

That said.....   when considering perspective.. do we over react when we consider the safety of people being in a flat bed but ignore people on a motorcycle - surely being in a pickup-flat bed is a lot safer than being on a motorcycle ?????

Being on a motorcycle is perfectly safe if one drives properly and stays alert.

Yep. Driving 7-ish hours in a day (Kanchanburi to Hua Hin and back) with Thai family in the back is just beyond stupid. One accident, even if not your fault, and you are liable for the deaths of many Thais, that would be fun. But he laughs it off, "when in Rome". One of the most idiotic things I've read on here for a while.

Like another poster said, I have a 100% seatbelt rule. Even if just driving to the local 7-Eleven in my car (which is one of the safest on the market) if the kids don't have their belts on we don't move. Family, friends, neighbours, all have to obey the same rule. Of course it is second nature to my kids now. The roads are unpredictable and dangerous and even if you do everything perfectly you can still become a cropper. One of my cars almost got squished in two right outside my condo when I was smashed into by a speeding pick up - if I had people in with no seatbelts or I was in a pickup with people sat in the back there would have been deaths.

The poster is an idiot and should be ashamed.

I don't believe so at all..   its not perfectly safe at all..  neither riding a motorcycle here as dangerous as some make out... 

 

I ride a motorcycle here...   and follow my own strict rules...

- Never while drinking

- Never at night

- Never in the rain (unless impossible)

- Wear Gear (Full face helmet (or open if very travelling very locally), good gloves, footwear, jacket with back protector)

 

I'm acutely aware that motorcycling is not 'perfectly safe'...   we can only minimise the risk as best we can by riding intelligently....

 

Even riding as safely as possible, we're still safer in the flatbed of a pickup when its driven by a sensible driver.

The issue of course then becomes, how well do we trust the driver if we were to be in the flat-bed of a pickup !!...

Here, nobody gives a hoot if people die. Everyone involved is indifferent: the driver, the school, the police, the parents, and the children. What is the point? Everything about them—their homeland, their traditions, and their daily lives.
 

A couple of days ago I was driving from Bangkok back home to Ratchaburi.  On the way there was a pickup truck in front of me with 3 falang sitting in the back.  They seemed to be having a grand time and were even waving at some of the other cars as they passed by.  I think they were even amazed to see me, a falang, driving a vehicle behind them.

Actually the post/photo implies it's an everyday thing, which it may or may be.  Irresponsible yes, but their is levels of safety, some acceptable.

 

Was it simply a very short transfer of students from small village to a bus stop ?

 

Was it a one day thing, hopefully short drive in safe are from  designated spot, to a school, or elsewhere because the regular van used was in the shop.

 

Could have been a short hop from school to certain area (beach or park) for a bit of trash cleansing, as they do here, though close enough to walk.

 

Did it even involve the school ?  Was an 'escorted' drive from school to a launching point for one the their street parades ?

 

Does look to be sporting attire, maybe short hop to playing field.

 

Or it could have been on irresponsible daily school run, although when packing them in on a daily bases, usually have wooden 'bench' crossways in the truck bed.

You are conditioned to back home, this is the Wild West over road rules, just yesterday out on the bike with the gf when 2 if 14 yer old boys pulled up besides us on a motorbike, I turned to the baby face kid and said you dont have a licence with a smile on my face, didnt understand, the gf translated my message they just smiled, pointed to my helmet meaning you should consider one, just another smile as they road off into he sunset...

 

The other day I actually seen what I would assume to be a highway patrol policeman on a BMW bike, only the second time in 2 ys.....took a pic as It was such a rare occurrence....the only time you see traffic police is when there doing licence checks......for motor bikes....
