Seems the title should be changed to My Family instead ofThai people. Painting with a too wide brush does nobody any good. This problem is your own Thai family, end of story.

It's not confined to my family, you have no idea the how many Thai people gamble with other peoples money.  Of course if they don't win the person lending the money is never going to see their money again. At least in other countries people are a bit more careful who puts the bite on them.

Losing money in casinos must be an Asian thing. We have casinos in every big city in Australia I guess 80% of punters are Asian. And yes, the casino always wins.

I'm an Aussie and I totally agree with you but are the Asians in Australian casinos betting with their own money?

How much are you willing to lose is probably the question/answer.

Asians are notorious gamblers.  Went to a casino on Macau many years ago when the Portuguese still rented/leased it.  My God... The money I saw crossing the table was way above my pay grade.

And yet it was water off a ducks back to them.  Not something I'd ever want to get addicted to.

My missus likes to gamble but when times are tight she knows not to piss me off by wasting money.

Has anyone come across online slot's ?

It seems with the lottery, it's a game of very slim odds but online smartphone gambling is a beyond me. We don't have a lot to do with MIL but she is into it up to her neck, convinced that she can make back her losses, won't listen to anyone that tells her she is being had - classic addict.

Unless you married into a Thai family you probably don't really understand my question. It all stems from the Government lottery. So they go through all their mumbo jumbo. Buddhist crap, fortune tellers etc. So now they know the lucky numbers. Unfortunately they are total losers, maybe a consolation prize here and there. Come the next draw they need cash which they haven't got. So they get loans from anybody who will listen to them. My step daughter owes maybe 2 million baht to people with no chance of paying it back. She's changes where she lives at least every month, then she's on the bite again. My sister in law lost her home in Pattaya using her property to get a loan to gamble. Of course she lost the lot. Thankfully my wife is very tight with money and probably buys 5-6 lottery tickets per year. If Thailand ever get casinos there's going to be serious consequences. I've owned racehorses and greyhounds for the past 50 years. I always bet with my money and in moderation,.

you can say the same about ANY religion, all tripe

I agree with casino's opening up not being a good thing for the addictive nature of many thais.

The only winners are the casinos and loan sharks.

as my dad said '' the safest bet is to keep your money in your pocket son''

Ai, you are to proud to admit you married in to the wrong family?

First red flags, is when they speak bad about their friends and family, what they do and not do, but themselves are the pure deal with no issues.

You had no idea they where like this before you married her?

How many times you saved their butts so far?

These online games are set up so you win enough to appease you. Then only allow you to win occasionally based on the amounts you already have spent. It is a good draw and keeps the hopes of winning big again strong.

The normal person can get addicted to this easily enough if they were not able to see the patterns. So it is understandable that there are many many older Thais addicted to this. In my wife's work she is always being told she should play this game or that online. Even her sisters family is telling her how good it is. But always when I have her ask questions about the history of money spent or won. There is a negative value cast out showing it is a losing option. So, this is enough to get my wife to lose interest in playing it.

What Thais who understand this loss needs to worry about, as well as this foreigner with his step-daughter losing so much money is that she will eventually be seeking ways that may affect him to get more money to play or to pay off her debts from it. She is family and Thai families have their ways to get other family members to give money.

Also, some others commented about there are no legal casinos in Thailand. But there was a feasibility study done to change those laws. And of course, it would show that if legalised the government would always be the winner.I expect that soon legislation will allow casinos to start up here. This would help the government but hurt so many Thais and foreigners financially. I dread when this would happen. The repercussions would be far reaching.

Culture and education, I really wish this problem is regulated to just his family but it isnt much more wide spread that people eant to believe.

One of the problem as I see it " criticism "  in general of course family and friends see and know the problem but dont say a thing only when they had enough by then it is too late.

I for one fear the opening of casino and it is coming regardless of our opinions.

How can they consider casinos with the average debt as it is now. Government and rich owners will make money.    What a bad idea.  Feom my experience many thais are not good with budgeting and financial planning
