TWO BROTHERS from New Zealand who tried to snatch a Phuket policeman’s pistol during a tussle after they were chased and stopped for speeding on their motorcycles face five charges, TV Channel 7 said Monday afternoon (Mar. 18).

After a meeting attended by Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat and Phuket Provincial Police Commander Pol. Maj. Gen. Sinlert Sukhum, it was announced that the two New Zealand tourists, Mr. Hamish Day, 36, and Mr. Oscar Mattson Day, 38, will be slapped with five charges from the original four adding a charge of bribing officials as well.

The initial four charges are stealing, fighting and obstructing officers while performing their duties, attacking an officer and driving without a licence.

Governor Sophon issued a statement saying he “cannot accept” inappropriate and illegal behavior. The Immigration Bureau has already revoked the visas of the two tourists and ordered strict prosecution in order not to damage the tourism atmosphere in Phuket.

Meanwhile Phuket Facebook page “Phuket Info Centre ” dug up the background of the two brothers who assaulted Pol. Lt. Somsak Noo-iad, attached to Chalong police station, and tried to snatch his pistol on Sunday finding out that they are boxers and for this reason it is not surprising they were able to lock him in a chokehold.

Parents of Kiwi brothers involved in Phuket assault, “distraught”

By Peter Roche

image.jpeg

The parents of two New Zealand brothers, arrested in Phuket following a weekend incident with a police officer, have expressed their “anguish” as the siblings face their first court appearance.

Brothers Hamish and Oscar Day, aged 36 and 38, were taking a holiday together in Phuket when they got into an altercation with a police officer. Officer Somsak accused them of “speeding and not staying close to the side of the road”.

The initial incident happened near the front of the Chalong police station in Chao Fah Road East. The parents, Laurence and Katrina Day, wealthy business owners, described as “millionaires’ in some NZ media, have appealed for calm and privacy following the incident which gained widespread attention after videos surfaced, including on Thai television and social media.

UPDATE: Two New Zealand Suspects in Alleged Assault of Thai Cop to Have Visas Revoked, Head to Court
By Goongnang Suksawat

image.jpeg

General Surachet has informed the press that he has instructed Major General Songprod Sirisukkha, the Immigration Region 6 Commander, to cancel the visas of the two New Zealand men in question and prohibit their entry into Thailand in the future.

The Chalong Police Chief, Colonel Eakkarat Plaiduang, revealed that these two individuals are currently being taken to the Phuket Provincial Court today (March 18th).

The two suspects are facing charges related to robbery, assaulting or resisting an officer on duty, and driving without a valid license. Despite allegedly attempting to bribe the police to avoid further charges, their efforts were unsuccessful.

Additionally, the New Zealand embassy has been notified of the situation.

Was there really any other choice?

Thrash like these two deserve to be kicked up the plane steps. Two nut cases that, for whatever unknown reason, turned a simple traffic stop into mayhem

I'm reading the original article and I feel my hair start moving.
"Just a couple of kids on a tourist trip" the father says.
(Mr. Hamish Day, 36, and Mr. Oscar Mattson Day, 38, the police report says)
"Who would have ever expected this?"
"They were just on holiday. It’s very difficult"
"It’s a very trying time"
I would certainly refrain of any Kiwi-bashing comments (let us all hold our steam for the next Russian-bashing session, should we?). I just came from NZ about a month ago and I can assure you this is not what you see in Christchurch on a daily basis. So my question is WHAT THE FREAKING HELL? What kind of hell should be inside your head not only to do this but to speak of this in this manner, either from the "couple of kids" or their "tree doesn't fall from the apple" parents?

So?

In most countries, if you physically go after a cop and grab for his gun, the police have every right to shoot their attackers.  No court would convict that cop.

Report states they are both Boxers .

Trained disciplined Boxers would not behave in this manner bringing disrepute to the sport.

5 years inside then deport with a lifetime ban from The Kingdom .

The "Let's kick the Doctor" one is currently awaiting it's criminal trial. His long-term visa has already been revoked but he isn't currently in the deportation chain cause of the criminal offence accusations. He will either be incarcerated (2 years) and THEN deported or get out of the country earlier through some schemes but stripped off about all his Thai assets.
The "Let's beat the hell out of random people in the supermarket" one is somewhat more interesting case. Still extremely uncooperative (his ex-wife did a lot to ease the process but to no result), will most certainly spend next 2 years in jail and get deported afterwards.

Yes. So far, no apologies. I hope the NZ Embassy attempts to make ammends in this recent period of gross bad behaviour from Thailand's visitors. Most of us don't deserve these lousy reputations - broadcast by a rowdy few. The Thais have always treated me well and I try to reciprocate.
