Driving License 5 year renewal Prakanong Bangkok.

There are no restrictions on my new license.  The back of the license only contains my full postal address, a QR code and a picture of a motorcycle.

No other information.

On the front of the license it clearly states

“Private Motorcycle Driving License”.

On a different note, people are asking about when to renew?

From experience for both car and motorcycle license renewal is that if you renew say a week or a month after your license has expired, the system/computer used by the licensing authority cannot count backwards, only forward. The end result is that you gain almost an extra year.

I renewed 10 days after expiry and received 5 years and 355 days; they always renew to your birthday 5 years ahead of the renewal date, hence the extra 355 days.

My friend renewed his DL with Yellow book and Pink card (not sure which office)

On the back it states that he is restricted to leave the province without permission from the authority (near the address area)

Indeed, and for that reason I was advised when I renewed my 5 yr DL at DLT Bangchak 2 years ago, to use the Yellow Tabien Baan only and not the pink ID card.

Again I think that is something that depends on each office because I used my yellow book and my pink ID and there is no restrictions on the back of my DL. (This is Bueng Sam Phan, Phetchabun office)

Come to think of it, they only used my yellow book, although I did offer both.

Again, I just checked my license and there are no restrictions in my license.

So, I think you have raised a valid point on the difference between 5-year renewal with a pink ID card or Yellow House book, of which the latter appears to be the best option.

I would add, that in order to obtain a pink ID card, you must have a Yellow House book, but I might be wrong on that.

He used his Pink card and Yellow book both, on the front where it says ID -it mentions his 13 digit pink card number , not his passport.

Further, his name is written in Thai and English both, whereas who use their Passports - name is written in English 2 times.

On the front where it mentions "ID" what does it show, your 13 digit pink card or your passport number ?

It's exactly same as mine, pink id number, name in Thai and in English

As mentioned before, using the pink ID, the DL number will be your pink ID number, which in my opinion is the best for different reasons:

1. Your pink ID number will never change. (your passport number changes every time it is renewed)

2. If you have motorbike and car driver license like me, if one of them is still valid (with the passport number) you can’t have both DL on the DLT app under the same username, they are not linked, and you will need to register again every time you get your passport renewed, whereas using the pink ID will remain the same.

At the time of the DL renewal, you still have to show your passport for the visa and personal details, but after that everything will be done using the pink ID. To watch the videos for the DL renewal, you can still able to register with your passport so you can watch the subtitled version.

Nope. Definitely in Thai. No options to change the language and if I go directly to YouTube, the captions are closed.

I found if you use you Pink ID to register on dlt-elearning.com it will only be in Thai, but if you register with your foreign passport then it will give you the option of choosing English

I have just returned from renewing my 5-year Thai motorcycle license at the Department of Land Transport (DLT) at Prakanong.

This DLT office is known as Area 3 and is on Sukhumvit road, just after Soi 99 Bangkok.

My main reason for going to this DLT office was that they offered appointments for renewing my license; I booked the appointment 2 months ago.

In the meantime I realised that my time at the DLT would be greatly reduced if I completed the theoretical part of the renewal process online.  It took around 90 minutes to complete. This theoretical test online consists of 7 different videos, in each video you have to answer one question in a multiple choice style.  At the end of the test you can review your answers and then submit. If all questions are correctly answered, you are issued with a QR code and some other details which you use when you present yourself at the DLT.

Another new element is that we as foreigners can now use our Yellow House book and Pink ID card to complete the renewal process.

Here are the items I had to submit this morning:

* Appointment booking QR code (issued when booking the appointment in advance)

* DLT e-Learning referral QR code, issued on passing the online theoretical test.

* Yellow House book plus a photocopy of the two pages

* Pink ID card plus a photocopy

* Passport main photo, page plus photocopy

* Health certificate not older than 30 days

* Old driver license plus photocopy

Using my Yellow House book and my Pink ID card saved me from getting a residency certificate from my embassy or from Immigration.

In previous years I have used my ‘Old Style’ Work Permit, as that too is accepted as proof of address.
I brought my Work Permit with me, but they did not want it,  and used the Yellow Book plus Pink ID Card.

PS. New style Work Permits no longer contain the holder’s address and are therefore no longer accepted.

on arriving at the DLT centre I was directed to the “Foreigners” help desk, where, after showing the appointment reference, they inspected my documents and where I had to show them that I had completed the online E-learning + QR code.

I was then issued with more paperwork and sent along to the next administrator who, again, checked my paperwork and issued something else. After that I was sent to another administrator who issued more paperwork to complete and the physical test forms.

After that I was made to watch a video for about 2 minutes, instructing you how to perform the physical test.  You couldn’t hear a thing because of the noise and all the other chaotic goings on …..

I was then taken into the room where the physical tests are performed. The tests are pretty simple and I was done in 2 minutes.
Paper stamped and off to the next booth, where they actually issue the new license.

That took about 40 minutes before I was seen by an officer.  Once with the officer,  it took 2 minutes and 255 Baht and a new license one minute later.

Here is a fact that some people may know already.  If you renew after the expiry date of your old license, your new license will be issued for another 5 years, but because the computer system cannot count backwards, you get 5 years plus (in my case) 11 months, as I was one month over the expiry date, so, virtually 6 years.  Renewal dates are set on your birthdate.

So, having made an appointment and completing the DLT online E-Learning significantly speeded up the process at the DLT.

I want to repeat that my experience above was at the DLT Area Office 3 Prakanong, Sukhumvit 99 Bangkok.
Other DLT offices may not accept Yellow House book and Pink ID card as proof of residency.

My total time at this DLT office from arriving to leaving with a new license was about 80 minutes.

Did you need to show any type of Visa's or Extension? My 5 year Car license expires at the end of June, and I won't be returning until July 10th and only enter on Visa exempt, I am from Canada. Will they allow me to renew?

I really think that there is no definitive answer to this question.  As we have already seen that different DLT offices apply different rules, just like immigration.

i think your best opportunity would be to renew before leaving at the end of June.
Your argument will likely be that they tell you to come back once you have renewed your visa ….
I would take that gamble and try … you have nothing to lose.

Thanks. I am already back in Canada, and be in Bangkok July 10. I just got a single 90 day non imm-O visa yesterday, would that be suffix or would I have to get a 1 year extension?

I’m afraid that I cannot help you with an appropriate answer; I really don’t know.

I guess you could try with your 90-day

O-visa.

Other members might have alternative suggestions.

The only other option I can think of is to use an agent.

If you have the pink ID card and yellow tabian ban, they don't care about your visa at all in Nonthaburi office.

This is a common misconception:

The statment on the back of the Pink ID card:

"The person named on the card is prohibited from leaving the card issuing area. Except for those who have alien identification card or person who has received written permission"

What this means is anyone without 'alien identification' cannot leave the area of issue (Amphur area)...

Most people have a Passport and this is considered 'Alien Identification' and superseedes the Pink ID card (and geographical restrictions on the validity of that card).

On the back of the Thai Driving Licence itself (IF obtained with Yellow Book & Pink ID) the restrictions state:

"in the case of driving outside of the area, use it together with permission to leave the area"

The permission to leave the area is your Passport.

Thank you for the clarification regarding the restrictions of a pink ID card.

I have just taken pictures of my new motorcycle licence and it does not contain any restrictions despite having renewed with my Yellow House Book. As I mentioned before the Prakanong Office did not want my pink ID card, only my Yellow House Book.
Although I have blacked out most of my pink ID card number, it is used on my license starting with 6.

My car license is due for renewal early next year.  I will report again after that’s done.

A couple of other posters have also pointed out that their is not wording of any restriction on other license their license.

I suspect the DLT have realised the flaw in that wording and it no longer exists in the newer licenses...  I'll find out when I renew mine again in a couple of years.

What does strike me as extremely odd is that some DLT's (i.e. Chonburi) will not accept the Yellow House Book as proof of address when applying / renewing a licence.

I have two Thai licenses...one for car and one for motorcyle...they both expired at at the same time which is end of Dec 2024.

I have three questions I hope someone can answer/carlify for me

Q1:  Do I need to do separate online E-DLT tests/videos which means getting two difference QR codes?

Q2:  If I have to do a test for each (car and motorcyle) does this mean I need to registered twice?

Q3:  How many months in advance can I complete the tests/get the QR code...that is, how many months is a QR code good for?

Thanks in advance.

Q1 - I'm not sure as I renewed both my car and MC licence before the E-DLT video was a thing, but given the following answers, I think its safe to assume that one QR code is sufficient.

Q2 - 'Test' ?? what do you mean by Test ?... If you mean the 'in class checks' - such as colour blindness, reaction, proximity test etc...  then you only need to do these once if getting both car and MC license at the same time.

The last time I obtained my License in Jan 2020 (renewal of 5 year license) - at DLT Area 3 BangChang (Sukhumvit 99/1) in-class tests etc were good for both MC and Car licenses.

Q3 - Unknown (a complete guess - 3 months seems reasonable for renewal)

I know the medical certificate is good for 1 month only, but I'm asking about how long the eDLT QR code is good for which to the best of my googling is 3 months BUT it may now be 6 months.

The answer to question 1 is that you will need to do TWO separate online E-learning DLT tests/videos and get 2 QR codes, because car and motorcycle video/testing via DLT online training are entirely different videos and questions. I did motorcycle and all questions were geared with regards to the handling and safety measures of riding a motorcycle. The car test/video will be different.

I think that then also answers question number 2 with YES you need to register twice; motorcycle and car.

Question 3.

I know from doing the online e-learning that once you start (there are 7 elements/videos/sets of Qs) you need to complete all 7 parts within 09 months.
You can do one part, stop and return to the test later.

I do not know how long the QR is valid for once you have answered all questions correctly and the QR code is issued.

Hope this helps …..

The Thais are still dangerously incompetent, sxxt drivers, so instead of making the foreign drivers, who are, one hopes, of a better standard,  jump through their stupid processes as detailed by the OP.  they should try to train their moronic National drivers the rules and techniques that they so clearly lack.

Yes...it does....thanks.   But you answer raised another question and that is: can you reigister twice?

I haven't registered yet, but I'm assuming when a person registers there is some key piece of registration that would prevent a person from registering twice.  Like maybe a person's passport number, phone number, etc.   UNLESS maybe once registered and you can enter the system to begin online training it offers a car test and then a separate motorcyle test?  When  you pass one and get a QR code you can then do the other and get a different QR code?

Well, in regards to some of my questions above,  I did that online training today in preparation for renewal of my car and motorcycle license renewals.     The only course offered for a "foreigner" was a combo  car, tuk-tuk, and motorcycle....basically a combo/generic type training video that  covers all three type vehicles. For a foreigner there was no separate course offered for a motorcycle. I registered with my passport.   See 1st Snapshot below.

And I did pass the course and the QR Code Training Certificate issued is good for 180 days (6 months).   It's a four part course/video that takes approx 15 to 20 minutes "per part" to finish.   Parts 1 and 2 is in Thai with Thai narrators but with English subtitles.  Part 3 and 4 are totally in English with western narrators...no subtitle needed or provided.   During each part only "one" question is asked and it may or may not be a subject that the video was covering....it just seemed to be a random test question.   So, a total of 4 questions asked during the 4 part video which takes a little over an hour total.

"Now, if a Thai" you registered with your Thai ID car then the online courses offered is different in that there is one course for a car & tuk-tuk and then a separate course for a motorcycle....see 2nd snapshot below.   My Thai wife took the course as her car license needs renewal soon.  It also is a 4 parts one hour total video.....and the parts/video is completely different from the foreigner version....different video all together.   But still only one question per part asked....QR Code Training Certificate good for 180 days.

1st snapshot of training course offered "when registering/logging in as a foreigner."  Notice the course covers motorcycles, tricycles "and" cars.   It's like a combo course.

image.png.22074b60e2d4a44ab34a18df9449596a.png

2nd snapshot:  However for a Thai who registered with their Thai ID there is a separate motorcycle course offered and a separate course for a car or tuk-tuk/tricycle.   Different from the course for a foreigner where there is a combo course that covers car, tuk-tuk, "and" motorcycle as shown in above 1st snapshot.

My auto & motorcycle licenses along with my Thai wife's auto license expires at the end of the this year.  When we went to the Drivers License Office here in Khet Talingchan, Bangkok just to get info/confirm the requirements to renew our 5 year licenses one of the specific questions I asked was could I renew using my Pink ID Card/Yellow Book as confirmation of my address vs getting a Certificate of Address from my local immigration office.

The answer was: I will be able to use my Pink ID card/Yellow Book vs getting a Certificate of Address from my immigration.   My Pink ID Card/Yellow book 13 digit number will be used on my renewed licenses vs my passport number.   I said I've heard that by  using your Pink ID Card/Yellow Book then that would result in a restriction on your license for the local area only...but the drivers license reps said it "use" to be that way years ago but no longer....there are no restriction of any kind...just like if you had used your passport.

And the two driver license reps who told me this are the ones  who will actually being reviewing/approving my renewal application.     I go back in a little over two weeks for my scheduled appointment.  I also got my medical certificate today which is good for 30 days...cost Bt200 at a little clinic right next to the driver license office.   Just had to provide my height and weight, a check to ensure I was not color blind,  blood pressure check, and answer a few questions as to if I had any major medical problems.  Only took about 10 minutes.   Ditto for the wife.

After getting the medical certificates we went back to the office and the wife got her renewed license today as both of us had done the online training yesterday....she just showed a snapshot of the QR Training Certificate.  Then she went to a room where they run a few checks to ensure you are not color blind, able to quickly move your foot from a gas peddle to brake peddle, etc.  Easy stuff...only took about 5 minutes total.

For whatever reason(s) they accepted the Thai wife as a walk-in today...maybe they had some open appointment slots I don't know....they were just very helpful.   But for me they would not do it today...but they made an appointment for me approx two weeks from now.   I could have use the appointment app to make an appointment but since the drivers license office was willing to do it for me then good....beats downloading, installing, and registering with a govt app that you will only use once every 5 years.

Yeap...we just went to the office to get some info today and see if we could schedule an appointment vs use the app they want you to use.  Basically they routinely do "not" do walk-ins....you are suppose to have made an appointment...but for whatever reason they allowed the wife do her this afternoon without an appointment....and for me they made my appointment and basically looked at my paperwork, the medical certificate I got today, and my QR Training Certificate which I got yesterday and said I was good to go....just bring certain copies of the docs when coming back for my appointment in a few weeks.    I feel like I'm preapproved paperwork-wise....just need to show up for the appointment, do a few response/eye/reaction tests, and then get my renewal licenses issued.

The drivers license office reps today were VERY, VERY helpful.  The wife left with a renewed license, I got an appointment a few weeks from now to renew mine, and I got a bunch of paperwork questions clearing answered.

Just an update:  Today was my appt for 5 year renewal of my Thai auto and motorcycle licenses here at a Bangkok DL office.   My Yellow Book/Pink ID card number was used on both licenses; not my passport number as before.  Saved me the time and money in getting a Residence Certificate from my servicing immigration office.

No restriction on the license due to use of the Yellow Book/Pink ID card  number on the licenses....this restricted notice is a policy that went away years ago according to what the drivers license reps told me and the Thai wife.    My new licenses look just like my old licenses which used my passport number.

Total time in the DL office today was about 1 hour 45 minutes.   Would have been closer to 1 hour 15 minutes but out of the 11 cubicles they normally have open for the final step of taking your picture and printing out the new license along with paying only 3 cubicles were manned.  When the wife got her license a few weeks ago all 11 cubicles were manned.  Cost of auto license was Bt505 and motorcycle license Bt255.   I'm now good to go for another 5 years plus.

By the way, you can now renewal a license up to 6 months before expiration without any loss of time....it use to be up to 3 months before.  My renewal today was 3.5 months before expiration.  The online training QR certificate is good for 6 months (same certificate used for both licenses), and the medical certificate for 1 month.   Not sure about a Residence Certificate since I did not use/need one as I used my Yellow Book/Pink ID instead.
