Is Vietnam going to be next retirement

Featured Replies

The question is.

As the next generation say 10-20 years from now when some of you will not be posting..

YouTubers are saying DA NANG in Vietnam is the next Pattaya in terms of retirement without the Go Go bars I suspect

Every where now in YouTube is retirees particularly American posting their retirement in DA NANG , in Vietnam

I'm fascinated by this new fetish

Apparently Vietnam is cheaper than Thailand

Is DA NANG the next retirement for next generation

I want to check this place out , apparently cheaper , better visas?

I don't think so ,?

Vietnam,is the next generation who are going to massively retire there?

From my experience, Vietnam is more expensive than Thailand. Especially it's hard to beat Pattaya which is the cheapest of the cheapest

I'm not even talking about the complete lack of expat/retiree infrastructure

Booze and cigarettes are cheaper, for sure. If you are a heavy drinker and smoker, you can save a lot. But almost everything else is more expensive - from food in supermarkets to clothes to electronics.

I went to Danang Vietnam last year for a side trip. It has nothing on Pattaya and Pattaya is a far better option. The bar scene is crap and restaurants are ok but nothing great. I did some serious walk arounds and the bars during the daytime have no customers. At night, some night street food opens up and someone always sells local beer for around $1 USD per glass but that isn't in a bar. On the promenade they have several eating places but you have sit on those crappy small kids like chairs and low to the ground. Anyone over 100 kilos will fall straight to the ground. The food is OK but not cheap and quality compared to Thailand is so so. Accommodation was ok and around $40 AUD per night which is around 1,000 baht including breakfast, mid range 2 or 3 star hotel.

Some things were very good though. The promenade walk is great and better than Pattaya. It is longer, well paved and there are TOILETS which Pattaya has never had, plus it's safe also. The Vietnamese are out there at 4.30 to 5 AM exercising as was I. I am a walk for exercise person and I loved doing that before the sun came up. The other thing I like is that some of their small 7/11 style shops had table and chairs outside (not the kid ones) and you could buy a cold can of beer for the equivalent of 20 baht per can. On a hot day it's great sitting out there having a few cheap beers.

But the over all comparison to say Pattaya, I still choose Pattaya over Danang any day.

I spent 18 months there but that was over 55 years ago.  Weather similar to here, as are beaches, mountains, and jungle.  The people from what I read are great and welcome foreigners. The food is good too.

Some say the immigration is better.  Taxes ? I have no idea.  But we may find out over the next year or so here.  In any case, most of the readers here in 10-20 years of sucking up the pollution it might be a moot point.

Yep. Thailand is better even visa-wise. I'm not retired, but I've been in Thailand 4 years straight on tourists visas and exemptions.

Yes most of them will be gone 😂

Just wondering how the corruption level and practice is there, as widely spread and exercised as in Thailand?

as for some, under the table payment to facilitate visas and other arrangements are very important

for their staying...

Da Nang is only good for maybe 5 months of the year.  Hot season is pretty intense and rainy/winter season can be cold and miserable at times.  Also, with all the development they are well and truly on their way to ruining that place.  I give it another 10 years maybe.  It's a nice getaway right now so enjoy it while you can.

Define 'poor'?

Is it someone who gets paid 10x the local wage for doing nothing?

Wrong.

Any.

When the local wage is so small that the base foreign pension is 10x the local wage, yes, that's poor. A millionaire (US dollars, not baht or dong) can retire almost anywhere.

I can't see why any of the poorer countries wouldn't want retirees that bring in foreign currency and can support a local family.

But then I can't see why rich countries want poor, uneducated, uncivilised 3rd world Muslims either .......... and they all do.

Life is a complete mystery to me!

Poorer countries not wanting retirees  : regulations , many times the ruling class in those countries are extremely wealthy . You might be a millionaire , they are multi multi millionaires . Also , many times your so called poorer countries many times are in Asia , which in fact are all pretty closed anyway. If you look in Europe , i am sure that retiring in Spain , Portugal , Romania would be much easier and in many cases even cheaper . For Americans , plenty of S American countries are welcoming them , although with a bit of risk , so there a bit more has to be looked for ( but all is very depending on area ).

Rich countries wanting the poor .... is a typical European disease . We want to be better and more human rights involved then anywhere else , thx to our history as a payback . Politicians and rules are made for actual good meaning people , but in fact they forget that people are not like that. We are like dogs, very opportunistic , so if you offer free money or a better future for easy , well people are going to use that .

I read an article recently advising that there was no take up from developers for land plots in Da Nang that were put up for sale. If retirees were allowed to live there, that might be a different matter.

I stayed a few days in Da Nang last November and there are some very good bars and restaurants on the beach. My favourite was a place called East West which sold their own craft beers and good Western food. It was Austrian owned.

We stayed in a great hotel and all the friendly staff spoke English far better than their Thai counterparts.

We also stayed a few days in HCMC and there was a pretty vibrant P4P scene there (we were in the Japanese quarter). Their Walking Street was cheap but not a patch on the one in Pattaya.

I would say the place has potential for retirement living but I defer to those who know it better than I do.

Were you there on 14JUL1967?

I am pretty sure that I was there then.  But, even before that, Danang AB was called Rocket City.  Went through quite a few of those during my stint there.  We flew out of Danang daily and after too many rockt attacks and loss of acft, they moved our acft to CamRanh Bay for protection but we still had to stay in Rocket City - our acft would pick us up at the end of the runway and drop us off later at the end of the runway again.  They were just worried about losing any of those acft, not the rear-end crew members.  Our crews lived in tent city.  Not too long after that summer we moved  to Okinawa and flew on jets versus the 130's.  Longer flights but that was the beginning of a lot more trained folks and though they flew a lot less, they certainly complained more.  It was sorta like being in the war but then again it wasn't, as much danger was removed.  We still got chased chased off orbi by VN, Chinese and Russians.  A real growing-up experience but prepared me well for a successful career and now that allows me to live well in Thailand and hope that continues for quite some time.  I take it, that you too were there on that BIG and successful attack by the NVA.

It won't be a retirement destination for westerners until they have a retirement visa for westerners.  They are talking about it but nothing concrete yet.

This Youtuber "Greeny" just did a couple on parts of VN I never knew about...quite nice actually

my personal feelings for this worldwide phenomonom in the western countries, the Muslim and others fleeing the socalled <deleted>hole countries have noticed that they don't have to assilate into the western society, culture and traditions yet get enough immigrants in one location, there are enough votes to get one of their own elected into a political office.  As they continue to grow, the higher positions become open to their own and they can concentrate on changing the local society into that which they left.  Now why would they want to do that other than to destroy the west? I sure don't understand it, immigrants today are a different breed from those of the yesteryears in my opinion.  oh well who am I to judge while I am living in a foreign country instead of my native country but I am not trying to change anything here.
