Yeah well I commute every few months to Europe or the  southern East Coast of the USA from Siem Reap, sometimes with full baggage, so Ill be very happy if there is one less thing for me to fork with at 6am. And when I dont have baggage, I have layovers and separate flights and even more pieces of paper. Im sorry sir this is Istanbul, not Bangkok.

 

At airports in the USA they have face recognition at US Imm. Speeds you right through.

 

Flying sucks. Put me in a box, diaper me, knock me out and ship me. Anything they can even THINK of doing to MAYBE make it easier is fine.

Immigration/Security always checks your boarding pass.

This is quite silly considering the amount of road deaths and air pollution the country has. The nicest thing about a country shouldnt be its airport

The headline is grossly misleading, very possibly because this is yet another ego-fest from Khun Kirati, who is always happiest when holding grand press conferences and making fanciful claims. (And who is actually the head of AoT, not "Director of the Airports Authority of Thailand" as the article claims.)

 

The reality is that you will still get a boarding pass and will still show it at immigration (if flying internationally) and at the gate. This facial recognition system will only be used to pass through the security checkpoint, so they won't need to have someone standing there to spend two minutes comparing your boarding pass to your passport.

All I can say is I hope they have better facial recognition systems than are in use at Heathrow. My old biometric passport hadn't worked in the e-gates in T4 for several years. When I flew back to London in late August, I had a new passport which was less than a year old, yet the e-gates in T2 failed to recognise me, in spite of trying at least 5 times, to the annoyance of the staff and other customers. So you're ordered to go and see the only human being checking passports on the UK/EU side of Immigration, but there's a huge queue of people there. I got chatting with a couple of them and one of the guys had a passport that was even newer than mine, yet it didn't work. He was a frequent flyer and said that it never had worked. My guess is that around a fifth of people were failing to get through the e-gates and so being told to go and see the poor solitary Border Force chap we were queuing to see. Some people were getting quiet aggressive with him, but the flaky software and/or hardware was hardly his fault, and there was nothing he could do about it. Welcome back to Britain, where everything's massively overpriced and nothing works.

 

You're not allowed to take photos in the Immigration area, but I was cheesed off at the huge delay so I got the phone out. That's not a check-in queue, that's the queue to see the sole human being in Immigration, lol. That lot took over 30 minutes to get through. Now translate that to a normal high season day at Swampy and imagine the potential for huge delays!

On a recent trip to the U.K. with KLM from BKK it was self check in including hold baggage, you scanned your passport the machine printed out your boarding passes and luggage labels. You attached them to your hold baggage and put the baggage on the conveyor. It this facial recognition system is a success you could pass through the airport with out any human contact

The replies in this thread are staggering. 

 

The no boarding pass no human interaction system isn’t exactly a new thing. Many domestic systems have had it for ages and in Singapore there has been facial recognition on arrival and departure for quite a while too, As to boarding passes, you get them when you check in online and they sit in your phone and you scan then or show them if and when required. 

 

Anyone departing Thailand at swampy recently surely saw the speed benefit in the new no human interaction departure gates, just scan passport and use fingerprint scanner. Rolling that system across more parts of the airport is a win.

Most airline apps provide in addition to ticket, the seat & row information. How does facial recognition further flight boarding?

Who supplies, installs and maintains the facial recognition machines, and what access will they have to the system?

How secure is the system from external hackers?

It can only work, and then not very well if the reports from UK are true, if the system is based on the passport or some sort of National ID. 

The data has to be held on the passport/National ID so that the scan check is checking one to one.  If the facial recognition data is held on a separate database then the checking will take ages as it is based on a one to very many on a huge database.

they have this system in Hong Kong and it works well, they do still give you a boarding pass as well.

I'm sure the main reason for this idea is big kickbacks from the system vendor.

And that's the key.  The title is wrong.  They're augmenting the boarding passes.  Not replacing them.  You still need a piece of paper to show the flight attendant if there's any seating faux pas, and to attach your luggage tag. 

 

Until they can guaranty that everyone has a smartphone and the battery hasn't died during the long trip.
