But as @Lucky Bones suggested I once stayed in a place called Amari Nova suites. To walk to the beach I went through an alley lined with about 50 brothels with hundreds of half naked fat females swarming on the pavement. Was heaving once I reached the beach.

The big red light area was around the Saphan Kwai BTS station. There was still a thriving bar scene there when I arrived in Bangkok in the early-90's.

 

By 2003 most, if not all the bars, had closed down.

I don't even think to call some of the dark side areas as 'Pattaya'. Strikes me it stops at Sukhumvit. (North Jomtien and south Naklua.)

Some of those areas might prefer not to appear they are under the Pattaya dominion.

Edwards, nicknamed "Cowboy" because he always wore a cowboy hat.  He opened the Cowboy Bar in 1978, five years after the U.S. withdrew from the Vietnam War.  Contrary to what you sometimes see on the Internet,  it wasn't the first bar on the then nameless lane that would become Soi Cowboy, but it was one of the first few.  The Cowboy Bar was very popular and sparked the opening of additional bars on the same lane.  Due to the prominance of the Cowboy Bar,  legendary Bangkok chronicler  Bernard Trink called the lane Soi Cowboy and the name stuck.

That's what I see as the biggest contributing factor for girls that go to the bars.  There is no real parenting teaching them.

 

My wife did not have children, but her brother and his wife have a 4 year old that lives with his grandmother.  She speaks only Issan, and does not speak, read, write or understand Thai.  He goes to school one or two days every few weeks with no consequences or disciplining.  

 

He'll turn out to be a fine example of a Thai man.  Sad.

Similar experience with my wife and I living in Bang Saray.  We only go to that part of Pattaya to go to Immigration, Tukcom, T21, BK Hospital, and once or twice Central Festival.  I always say the same thing every time I go through that area, 'how can someone enjoy living in this area?'.  I find it greasy and most filthy, just like the people there. The only bar we've ever been in was during mandatory quarantine, and walking street was dark, as in no lights and everything closed.

Well someone s to my post asserting it was a place for Issan families. I must admit he was right. Soi 6 alone supports a whole district. As well as all the medical staff treating HIV and other STDs.
