Sorry, but at Subway they tell you the price AFTER they have made your sandwich, with the toppings.

Unless you have a standard sandwich without any extras, it's impossible for the staff to know how much it will cost.

I think you're incorrect they punch everything in the till and you pay

I watched this on the Thai TV news channel yesterday I'm not sure who's right and who's wrong here, Subway showed the order item by item apart from the footlong it says she ordered triple this and triple that, the question Im asking why would someone order that much food knowing they were about to get on a plane?,

Was something lost in translation here, the staff didn't understand what she said and she didn't understand what the staff said,

Obviously we don't know what was said from the start of ordering only her gobbing it off,

Anyway that was a lot of food to order, I went in a Subway recently in central I only ordered a normal one with xtra bacon, it was enough, All I can think of she must be a right pig,

Sometimes the staff are thick did they not think it was unusual her ordering that much?

I was in a Subway recently and we paid when we ordered, before she made it, Same with lots of them shops like Amazon you pay when you order, not sure about Starbucks,

Without saying this happened this instance, in some shops Subway or others, the sandwich maker will say: "Would you like guacamole on that?" And you say SURE without it being said that the guacamole is extra charge.

Sadly, her accent suggests that she's from the lower classes on not far from my home.

And where is that pray tell please?

Sure, so buy sandwiches drinks etc., at 7/11 and/or outside before you travel to the airport.

Why is she buying foot long sandwiches and all the additional toppings along with cookies for her two kids who are probably no more than 10 years old?

Chicken is so expensive in Phuket here up north it's only 50 baht a pack .

Of course what do you expect, this animals have to walk whole the way down from the north to Phuket.

Subway has very clear pricing so I fail to see what the problem is, she got what she ordered. If it was some random Thai food stall maybe she could accuse them of fraud, but not Subway with their clearly posted sign which includes prices of every item.

I haven't been to subway in Thailand for years but they always had the prices clearly posted on the sign or a menu on the table (same in US). Maybe if you're too stupid to add numbers together you may get a shock but still the prices should have been there.

While I don't visit Phuket, I do have Subway at DMK or BKK quite often when flying. And from the price breakdown it's not far off what I pay. Now, I don't add everything they have in the fridge to my sandwich, but with what she's ordered, I think the price is rather reasonable.

The bad part is on the staff at Subway branch, which will likely have that deducted out of their salaries, since sandwiches were already made by the time she refused to pay. I hope company's management reads this as well (I  bet they would have seen this story) and waives that.

I don't know. I would not have made a fuss like that. All prices are listed at the board, I believe add-ons as well (if they are not, maybe it's time to put them up).

A year or 2 ago I went to a translator in Pattaya (long story, but they are far more used to dealing with foreigners than they are in Bangkok and could get things done in hours rather than weeks) and stopped at a similar place to Subway at a shopping mall facing the beach. The place was nearly empty. Looking at their prices I could understand why - they were same or higher than at the airport. I guess they were charging for the location? Nonetheless, I was already there, accepted it and paid for it. After all, it's not like the staff working at the counter or putting food together set those prices. You order, you pay.

I was curious so here's what a foot long "The Ultimate B.M.T." with 2x meat and 2x cheese (there isn't even an option for 3x) costs in my home town in Colorado USA. $14, but that's before tax which is like 8% so it's more like $15 or 520 baht.

Prices for fast food are way up but that's still a reasonable price I guess for that massive sandwich. Phuket airport appears to be about the same price as in the US.

Also consider that (according Google) a Subway worker in that town earns $16/hour which means they can nearly buy one sandwich per hour of labor. How much does their Thai counterpart make, 30-50 baht/hour? Likely a full days labor couldn't afford one of those sandwiches.

Last time I bought a breakfast sandwich at Subway in Swampy, it cost more than the 2 pairs of Levi's Dockers I had bought in town.  But it was about the same price as breakfast at Burger King or McD's on the same departure concourse.

$72 for 3 meals that the airport?  Sounds about right.

Coarse or not, they ask you what you would like on your sandwich and many things are NOT extra charge.

They are probably used to tourists just bending over and taking it raw, rather than complaining and pointing out it is a rip-off (which it is).

Don't give me the high rents excuse, the airport was built with taxpayer's money and the AOT is 70% government owned.

A good comparison would be with the airport in KL, Malaysia, where prices of food vendors are much in line with those in the city centre.

Food prices at Thai airports are a rip-off, end of.

Phuket has been a no-go area for me for 20 years because it is full of rip-offs and dislikeable local oiks.

I reneged on this vow during C***D so I could have a week in a 6-star resort almost alone with empty beaches for pennies, but the embargo is back in force now. 😂
