Melania Trump Criticizes Democrats During Capitol Hill Discussion on Online Safety

First Lady Melania Trump took aim at congressional Democrats on Monday during a Capitol Hill roundtable focused on online safety and the dangers of non-consensual intimate imagery. The discussion centered around the "Take It Down Act," a proposed bill that would make it a crime to share such content online without permission.

The event marked Melania's first major solo public appearance since reassuming the role of first lady on January 20. She used the opportunity to advocate for the bill, which seeks to ensure that social media platforms remove non-consensual intimate images—including AI-generated deepfakes—within 48 hours of a victim’s request and take action to prevent the spread of duplicates.

Though Melania has largely remained out of the public eye since the inauguration, her presence at the roundtable reaffirmed her commitment to online safety, a cause she previously championed through her "Be Best" initiative during Donald Trump's first term.

During the discussion, the first lady commended Senators Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat from Minnesota, and Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, for working across party lines to move the legislation forward. The bill successfully passed the Senate in February. However, she did not hold back her disappointment over the lack of Democratic attendance at the roundtable.

"I was heartened to learn that Senator Cruz and Senator Klobuchar unified to prioritize this fundamental matter, but I must admit, however, I expected to see more Democrat leaders here today to address this serious issue. Surely, as adults we can prioritize America's children ahead of partisan politics," Melania stated.

Although the bill is co-sponsored by Klobuchar, it remains unclear whether she was present at the event. Newsweek reached out to her office for comment.

The only Democratic lawmaker reported to have attended the roundtable was Representative Ro Khanna of California, according to the Daily Mail. Cruz, who was actively engaged in the discussion, spoke about the personal story that inspired the legislation—an encounter with Elliston Berry and her mother, who spent nearly a year trying to remove an AI-generated explicit image from Snapchat.

The "Take It Down Act" aims to protect victims from both real and digitally altered intimate images, addressing the growing threat of deepfake technology.

As of now, the Republican-led House has not yet moved forward with the measure. However, Melania’s vocal support could increase its chances of passing and ultimately being signed into law by President Trump.

The first lady is set to return to the Capitol on Tuesday to attend her husband's primetime address to a joint session of Congress.

Stopping your husband from threatening everyone and their uncle on his ‘Truth Social’ on a daily basis would improve online safety a lot, Melania.

I think you are over-estimating the maturity of the Democrats, Melania.

She is brilliant. Stunning.

"If Carlsberg did First Ladies".

From Joe and Jill Biden (and Kamala Harris) to Donald and Melania Trump (and JD Vance). What an upgrade!!!

Not to mention the upgrade from Jean Pierre to Karoline Leavitt. Great times for the US!

Maybe Melania's involvement here is to get her nude pics removed from NYP.

Trump joked today in his speech that he might use that law to remove memes and deepfakes of himself

Could be a "conflict of interest" here. Is she angling to have her nude modeling photos wiped from the internet? Asking for a friend ...

Oops, did not see your post before posting much the same thought ...

A cynic might think Melania, to use the idiom, has some ‘skin in the game’.

You're there to look good. And as soon as you start to look old he'll throw you over for a younger model. Like his daughter, lol

It wouldn't work, he would just deny that it is him, as he always does.

The bill is aimed at cyber crime, pedophiles, revenge posting, cyber bullying, shaming, but of course, you want to focus on a schoolboy's pin-up poster. It's disturbing what you may be doing behind the keyboard while drooling and condeming what you'll never have. :wai:
