How come they don't understand that week-long water throwing is actually bad for business?

Keeps the complainers inside.
Scared of getting wet.
while the rest of the country has a big party.

Loud music too, also upsets the complainers.

Loud music happens all the time, as no one cares about others enough to turn it down, especially in early mornings or late evenings. Having the country partying isn't a bad idea, but if you take all the deaths, injuries and fights that happens, it doesn't end up as fun for some. People aren't scared of getting wet, it's just that they want to go to restaurants and don't want to sit eating drenched.

When people get soaked in water, they don't go into restaurants, bars or clubs. And many avoid going out altogether! Either way, businesses lose a lot of money.

How is it possible to be so stupid and not understand this?

You're thinking too much - stop it!

Yea I bet the hospitals do a booming business with all the Songkran injuries...Pain and suffering is very good for the economy,,,,

And whats you point? You you play stupid games you win stupid prizes, everywhere in the world. Drunk drivers is generally a bigger issue than your standard Songkran injury.

Thais are waiting the whole year for these few days when they can behave like 5 year old children.

Surely, they get to do this in their cars, trucks and on motorbikes every single day? 🙂

Yes it is stupid, massage shops for example are dead quiet for Songkran, who wants to get a massage wet. If they were smart they'd make it one day only

Who are "they"?  Massage shop owners can't decide how long the holiday is or what people can or cannot do!

Songkran 2023, from Sala Daeng BTS station.  About 75% foreign tourists, spending their sweaty tourist money (right after Covid).  That crowd went all up and down Silom and over to Lumpini Park.

I don't participate, but I enjoy the heck out of watching people having fun.

Obviously those in power who can influence things like the mayor, plus there are business groups who can change things for their area

You're talking to the wrong person MalcolmB. If you knew how much I'm into music you'd be shocked.

and for employed Thai's who only entitled to 6 annual leave days per year... the 5 day weekend is great for them to get back up country and spend the time with family.

2 of those 5 days stuck in traffic jams.

Use 2 of those 6 annual leave days and they have 9 days total off work., 12th to 20th.

Smart ones drive back on Monday 21st using a sick leave day (30 per year).

What i really object to is throwing water/ice at motorcycles - this is extremely dangerous.  You have to be some sort of special idiot to think that this is acceptable behaviour.

They are not special... just idiots full stop ☹️

'The Thai approach to life emphasizes "sanuk" (fun), "mai pen rai" (it's okay/no worries), and a generally laid-back, easy going attitude, prioritizing harmony and avoiding conflict'.

How is it possible that you are so stupid that you do not understand this?

Jose is a Spanish and Portuguese form of the Hebrew name Joseph, I don't reckon he understands sanuk and mai pen rai in Thailand.

You have to be a special idiot to force people leave the city or stay at home for the entire week if they don't want to participate in this madness or simply wanna stay safe!

Thailand uses the Thai Solar calender. 543 years ahead of the Gregorian calender in 2025.

Since Songkran is celebrating the Thai new year, I think you need to respect the fact that they have more than 500 years practice at defining their New Year celebrations. It is hard to argue that those practices have evolved for the better. The more traditional, pouring of water into the cupped hands and a bit of powder patted on to the faces of elders, a bit of water poured over Bhudda images, does still happen. My wife and I still get the traditional treatment from our grand kids. The more untraditional high powered water guns, buckets of dirty water with ice and drunken stupidity in the streets has been an unwelcome development however, no one will ever curtail that no matter how many times people are injured, blinded or killed. So in answer to your question Josie, they probably do understand but for many reasons, it is all just let go, in a Thai way of course.

I have every right to say loudly and often that 2-3 days of this idiotic water throwing should be plenty.....Especially for Pattaya......

And for anyone who disagrees I really hope you get a bucket of cold water dumped on your azz when your going shopping or going out to eat...

But you know, during that period, I am aware of that, so they can throw many buckets on me, and I just smile and play along. Maybe I even throw some bucket at them. You know, this is Thailand, and you do not have the right to push your wester ideas into this society. If you don´t accept it or can take it. Just get the heck out.

Unfortunately, in Pattaya, it's not just a matter of avoiding street parties as the madness goes on everywhere.  What i really object to is throwing water/ice at motorcycles - this is extremely dangerous.  You have to be some sort of special idiot to think that this is acceptable behaviour.

Never got wet, 20 min motor bike drive to work, except Wan Lai the 19th.

Just avoid the bar streets.
