Over 20 Speed Bumps Spark Public Outcry in Ratchaburi Village

Residents of Nakhon Chum subdistrict in Ban Pong District, Ratchaburi Province, are calling on local authorities to remove some of the more than 20 closely spaced speed bumps recently installed throughout their village, citing damage to vehicles and potential safety risks, especially at night.

The speed bumps were installed as part of a campaign by the Nakhon Chum Subdistrict Administrative Organisation (SAO) to reduce traffic accidents in high-risk areas, including near Wat Mai Nakhon Chum, a busy intersection frequented by worshippers and local shoppers.

However, affected villagers say the number and density of the bumps far exceed what is necessary. One resident explained that while the intention to slow traffic is appreciated, the excessive number of bumps has caused damage to vehicles, disrupted daily transport, particularly for the elderly and ill and increased the risk of accidents for those unfamiliar with the route.

“It’s not about opposing safety measures,” the resident said. “We just want something reasonable. There needs to be space for cars to pass safely. At night, when it’s hard to see, this setup could cause more accidents.”

In response to the growing complaints shared on social media, Mr. Chaiya Iamkham, the SAO’s permanent secretary, clarified that the installation of the speed strips followed community requests for measures to improve road safety. The SAO purchased and installed the strips at key junctions identified as accident-prone, following reports of both traffic incidents and crimes, such as motorbike-based thefts, occurring with high speed escapes.

“Statistically, there have been frequent accidents and incidents in that area,” Mr. Chaiya explained. “The goal was to reduce loss of life and property. However, we acknowledge that the number may be excessive. Now that the installation is complete, we will assess the situation, remove some of the strips, and retain them for use in other locations as needed.”

Residents have expressed hope that the SAO will act quickly to ease the disruption and restore safer, more practical road conditions for everyone in the area.

Just how dumb can they get

Always concerned to go out with the dogs.

Before is had speed bumps,  cracks and potholes.

Good old times.

A smart villager will open a shock and strut store at the end of the road.

They can remove them at night with the right power tool.

1 or 2 speed bumps would be enough.

Looks like it might be a little bit irritating.

hit em fast enough and they are barely felt.

You really don't want the answer to that.

It makes you wonder what actually goes on inside these peoples heads, is there any sort of activity going on in there?

That's what has been created already.

Motor cyclists go off road to get round them

Totally frowned upon now in UK. Speed bumps are not installed where required because of slowing down emergency vehicles. They now put 2 smaller box shaped ramps in the roadway that ambulances and fire engines can straddle when attending emergency call outs.

That works in countries with 'civilised traffic'...   Here the same system would see motorcycles speeding through at speed....

But, the photo does show ridiculously excessive usage of speed bumps....   someone seems to have been either extremely flippant or extremely stupid in placing so many so closely.

Nice if you happen to be in the back of an ambulance..... trying to get somewhere fast

This is precisely the issue we’re facing in our moobaan.

Most residents drive with care - respectful of speed limits and mindful that children often play in the street. It’s a shared space, and fortunately the community is kind of middle-class, educated and generally behaves with consideration in mind.

The problem lies with delivery motorcycle deliveries. They routinely swerve around the speed bumps to avoid slowing down, completely ignoring the intended purpose of those traffic-calming measures.

In response, some residents placed flower pots at the edges of the bumps to block the bikes from swerving around the speedbumps - only to be told by the juristic committee that personal items aren't permitted on the road.

Now, many of us are pushing to have the speed bumps extended fully across the road to eliminate these gaps altogether.

Ironically, the only truly effective deterrent at present is when an adult physically stands in the street while the children are playing. Only then do the delivery riders seem to take notice and actually reduce their speed.

We've had the security guards tell riders to go slowly - but this in instruction which they forget to pass on quite quickly - its an unreliable measure....

The only alternative was to ban delivery vehicles and have them deliver the rest of the way on foot - but clearly this was unpractical too.

They rarely slow and traffic down and they do wear shocks, most take no notice of them, like zebra crossings, no parking lines or speed limits

Thai local government don't grasp the idea of speed bumps. The idea is to put speed bump together with warning signs so the drivers slow down when driving through the area. Here they put the road bumps to let cars drive fast then hit a bump and slow down after their suspension is ruined. They also don't extend them to the road edges so then you have the extra hazard of motorbikes maintaining their speed but weaving around the humps

Agreed...  But you can also see from the photo that the density of speed bumps goes beyond traffic calming measures an enters the realm of utter silliness...

Yes and no... Some fools blow over them as if they are not there (one on this thread already), meanwhile others drive over them at slower than walking pace, as if their car were made of glass and will break...

Nevertheless - anything which slows vehicles down to a reasonable speed in a built up area is a good thing.

Take a cruise along Pranburi beach rd, there's got to be about near 20 within 2 kms stretch :coffee1:

...or just completely pissed off at the people speeding through their area. I would suggest only needing two (about a car length apart), with higher and more angled tops. You want to make sure pickup trucks and large SUV's feel the wrath too. Maybe try the approach below, makes for great youtube videos....LOL

That makes it more dangerous for pedestrians now. Avoiding the dimwits on bikes heading for the very space they will be walking on.
